If I was so worried about my dog , that I couldn't turn him loose without knowing his every move and seeing it on a video screen .... I'd just save some grey hair and not turn him loose at all ... keep that precious puppy at home locked up !

Get off your high horses and get with the game. There is no better tool for a houndsman than the garmin astro. Plain and simple. I know right where my dog is, where its been, where its going, If he's moving treeing or sitting. It show roads and trails to show you the easiest route to the tree and gets you back to the truck without saying " well guys I think the truck is that way but im not sure". I double up on its usage because I am a deer and spring gobbler hunter and sometimes my dogs will tree in some part of the mountains where I haven't been right through before. If I find some good deer sign or something that looks like it could be a good area to hunt I can mark it and know how to get to it in the dark if I have to. Ask the bear hunters they'll tell you. There killing more bear and saving alot of gas because if the garmin. They know right where the bear will be crossing a trail or road so they can pack fresh dogs to it to help out the tired ones or shoot it when it crosses. I live in the heart of the alleghany mnts in va and they get to 2500-4500 feet tall and I have no prob keeping up with my hounds. I love it would never use anything else ever again. I use this antenna to get the best preformance and packablity in the woods. Its a folding telscopic antenna which is more packable and less likely to break like the hand held extended range antenna. Google this to check it out. Extended Range Folding Antenna for Garmin Astro 220. gun dog supply has it for 29.99

The mystery of the woods , exploring , being in the "wild" ... wondering what will happen next ... that is what most folks start out loving about hunting ... take that away and it's like taking the glitter off a stipper and turning on the lights .

There is no fun in wondering where your prize coonhound has gotten off to. I stay as close as i can to mine but every now and then a young dog im hunting decides to take a trip. Im not sure about how yall feel about your hounds but when i have one missing its like a lost family member.. I used to be totally against Tracking equipment but it totally pays for itself the one time your hound goes a miss. And the garmin is a way better way to keep up with your hounds

You know...if I lived out on the midwest where "big country" was commonplace and I could hunt 10,000 acres with no major roads crisscrossing it probably wouldn't see the need for a garmin.

Justin...You get on here and g into great detail at how important feed, etc is for a dog, but see no reason in making that hound as safe as possible while hunting.

People who belittle and mock those that use the greatest and best tracking system to date have a serious problem.

I don't know if it is jealousy or just outright ignorance, but each post you make mocking someone's choice of a tracking system.

Men who own better dogs than you or I ever will see the need for them to be cast with a garmin on... The proof is in the pudding.

I am sure there were folks like you who mocked the man who started using wheels, electricity, and put a handpump in his well.

But this garmin vs Beep Beeps is all personal preference. But to come on here and bad mouth some equipment because in your opinon its junk isnt fair or very respectful. The guy was asking about garmin not how big a pos you think it is, Always remember this opinons are like aholes everybody has one some just stink worse than others. dogfaceNH go ahead and get a garmin my friend you will not regret it. As far as wich collar to get 30 or 40.. Some swear by the 30 and some love the 40. All i can tell you is the 30 had trouble with the charging port getting debris in it but i think the newer 30's have been improved so they do not have that problem.

A dog is born with his own two way tracking device ... his mouth lets you know what he's doing ... and his sense of direction lets him find his way back to you if he gets lost .... can't ask for more than that .

I've hunted plenty with folks who had them ... I don't need anyone to look at their Garmin and point to tell me where the dogs are that I'm already listening to .. or to tell me when they tree or which direction is North ... or how to get to them ....

Yall seem to be overlooking the fact that you can't use them during a hunt anyway .... if you wanna prepare for a hunt where you can't use them .. how do you do it by using them ???

The incidents of hounds being killed while coonhunting ( not running roads or running deer across roads ) is so small compared to the number of hounds turned out each nite ... that if you wanna push Garmin from that angle ... you are sunk ... the math isn't there.

There is no logical or statistical way to push Garmin that will make sense ... the only angle to saying you need them .... is just because they are so neat that you WANT them and love the mixture of video game and reality ....

They have already completed studies about the effects of technology like video games , cell phones , texting and all this stimuli on the brain ... it forms the same addictions and dependancies as drugs or alcohol ... just without the liver damage.

Justin...Let me guess....

You still chop down trees with an axe to kill your coon.

$10 says you have reflective collars on your dogs. Why??

Quit visiting those strip clubs and "donating" your money to "Billie Sue Bimbo" and buy you a Garmin and when you NEED to know EXACTLY where your dog is, you will know...Not just a direction.

There is DOZENS of stories right here on this forum of the Garmin saving dogs lives and helping find stolen dogs.

YOUR "angle" is "sunk".

SCOTT YOU HIGHLIGHTED THE PART THAT MAKES SENCE TO ME. I CAN'T STAND HUNTING WITH SOMEONE THAT PLAYS WITH THEIR GARMIN AND PAYS NO MIND TO WHATS GOING ON IN FRONT OF THEM.

Like i said man everybody has their own opinion. If im hunting in a hunt and the hunt is over if my dog is way off i would want to know what is the easiest fastest way to get to him. I like all other hunters spend many hours and money and to say a dog will find his way back to you everytime is not a valid argument and whatever study on video game/electronic addiction is not a valid point either. All you have to say is you do not like any tracking equipment and thats it.. Tracking equipment is a huge help and adds some piece of mind. Yes if im hunting close to home i know all of my hunting grounds anrd can tell you every spot where they are treed but hunting unfamiliar ground nobody can tell where their dogs are and if they are close to a road or not.

I have no problem with you not liking garmin equipment but the guy that started this post was asking wich combo he should go with he wasnt deciding if he wanted one but wich one he wanted.
But as far as this goes i will just agree that we disagree.

Pm for my address and send me my $10 ... my collars are round , rolled leather and have no reflective strips or nameplates on them ... never have and never will . If my " prize coonhound" wants to keep that fancy title then he better either tree coon so I can find him ... or get back to the truck so he can come home with me .

The best thing you can use to save a dog's life ... is good training and a good handle . A dog that runs only coon and knows to come find you when he's done hunting doesn't need his life saved ....

Everyone has their own experience .. but the big picture is what I go by ... I've never had a hound ran over or killed ... not even a close call ... so I could say I don't need a Garmin and it'd be the truth .... yall could say a Garmin saved your dog's life and the dog is tryin' to get killed all the time .. and yall'd be telling the truth ..

But ... if we look at how many dogs are lost or killed vs. how many are hunted ... that is a fact . I don't have the exact numbers of course ... but it aint hard to realize what they'd be .

If you think you need a Garmin ... then get one , the heart wants what it wants ....

But to me , it's no different than getting a 28 volt light .. seriously ?

I'm a normal guy that just happens to varmint hunt ... so to me .. I can't tell a deerhunter that is all geeked out from head to toe and has his high dollar tree stand , feeders and game cams ....

... and a coonhunter that is his twin .... yall look the same to me .

You can find these all day long .... and it aint like it don't make sense .... when I'm in the woods , this is what I'm trying to get away from ....

Yall can have your Tom-toms , Garmins , Iphones , Ipods and such ... I'll go ahead and just use my own brain ....

I have hog hunted in Oklahoma several times and always brought our coon hounds as well. A Game Warden checked us one night and told us ALL HUNTING DOGS had to have collars with name and contact info on them.

Common Sense says to do this, whether it is law or not.

$10 still says yours have them and wear them....You just like to make up stuff as you go to keep an argument going.

Like I said...Lay off those strip clubs and buy a garmin. You'll like them.
