Its not uncommon to see coon during the day right ? So why would it be uncommon for a squirrel, be out after dark. JMO. Treed our first the other night, I thought it was slick and my boy says Dad heres a squirrel, so I whopped him right on the spot. I bet he will never say that again. lol

But we seriously did tree one the other night.......

X-factor,

Actually there is a good reason you don't see squirrels on dark nights as much as bright nights. All squirrels except flying squirrels do not have many rods in their eyes. Therefore, they have very poor night vision.

Your example of a raccoon isn't good because a raccoon sees equally well day or night.

I've hunted every night so far this week. We have seen squirrels in two different trees on two different nights. Squirrels move a lot more at night then people think especially when they are rutting (spring & fall).

Had a dog that was straight and accurate on coon but started "slick treeing" on shagbark hickory's when she was two years old. I was frustrated and couldn't figure out what was going on when my buddy said "she's treeing squirrels". I shot a squirrel one afternoon and took it home and used it to break her. I tied a rope to it and drug it across the yard in front of her kennel. She went crazy. I tied it up a tree about 4 feet from the ground and cut her loose with an e-collar on. When she grabbed it I fried the bejesus out of her. Next day did the same thing, third day when she saw the squirrel coming she about knocked the back of her dog coop off diving into it. Problem solved. It wasn't that the squirrels were moving after dark, she was treeing on the trees they were living in.

I see quite a few flying squirrels at night where I hunt now, they're nocturnal. I had one bail out of a cedar and fly right at my light. I thought it was going to hit me but it pulled up and it's tail brushed my nose.
