My first question would be, are you giving this dog a lot of coon? I think this problem is the reverse of the "dog comes off the tree to meet me problem". If the dog is treeing well; he does not need every coon; in fact, for a "problem dog" it should be a "very special event". I was talking to a Northern hunter last week; he is hunting a year old female and has given her 35 coon. He said she is getting "loose" on the tree; I suggested tieing her at the tree and making the few coon she got "special events". My thinking is the dog knows when you get to the tree, the coon comes out and he is recast. He s looking for that coon or next coon race. In fact, I would make short casts where coons are plentiful and give the dog as much repetiton as possible, until he straightens out. In fact, I would probably put him back in the truck and move after every drop, even if it's just a quarter mile to the other side of the woods. Give him enough repetition until he stops associating your arrival at the tree with a coon hitting the ground or being recast from the tree. JMO Tom
