Blckrivred,
Your post's are right on! I've been friends with a fur buyer for over thirty years and they have an ave. that they are determined to keep as you described perfectly. But it didn't help me from still feeling that they were taking advantage of us ol' coonhunters. But now after 6 years of sending my furs to nafa I got a whole new respect for the buyer. They have alot of overhead costs knives, stretcher's, labor to put up the coons plus heat and storage and every bullet hole, dog bite mark, etc cost you about 2 bucks each. And "SIZE MATTER'S" the Dakota's, Neb,Minn, Wis, Iowa, are the top coons in the sale. The smaller coons usually cost you money in the long run and i'm talking Northern IN small which is a biggun' for alot of southerner's.. but us great lake area cooner's will sneak a few biggun's in the top lots and usually you will double your ave. from what the local level guy is paying. I enjoy it and seeing how hard the fur's are graded on the world stage is an eye opener. You should do well on your MI coons just remember that every 10 cent hunk of lead you put in them will cost you 2$ and you'll be alright!! I recommend anyone who is unhappy with their buyer get out your fleshin' knife and stretcher's and take a gamble on the market yourself!! It will give you a whole new perspective on the fur business!! Happy Huntin'!! Jeff

Don't be too hard on old Nate, Jamie. My son shot one a few years back that was 38# plus and that was on a digital scale twenty four hours after he was shot. Had to be real close to live weight 40#. Back in 82 or 83 we won the big coon contest at the fur buyer with one that went 32#. Just happened to be a guy in there with a pile of monsters from up by North Branch. We skinned the coon we won with and measured it against the coon from North Branch. He had twenty seven that measured bigger than the one we won with. Any one of them with the hide on would have taken the rifle away from us. My wifes uncle used to live up by North Branch and talked of fourty pounders and I thought bs till I seen with my own eyes and measured myself.North Branch ain't too far across the border from Nate. Just cause ya ain't seen it don't mean it can't be.

us coon hunters has more hard work time money in the furs then the buyers. everyone needs to quiet saleing thier fur to the furbuyers.

Why do/would you carry a scale with you? Why not just weigh then when you get back home? Or do you weigh them before you shoot them so you know if they are what you want in weight or not?

I lived 30 miles north of Nate for 18 years and my old man still lives there. I've seen the coon he is talking about, but I find it awful hard to believe that there is that many of them.

Coon up there are far and few between. The bear baits are not getting hit by coon like they used to be. Perhaps he is traveling elsewhere to get his coon?

My bad deadeye, I thought he was in nw Wis. not ne. It takes a pretty fair dog to stop a really big one that decided he ain't gonna climb. That is why a lot of guys who live up here have never seen one close to that. My personal best is 36# and I hope to get a 40# before I'm done. There are more hogs in the north country but less coon over all.

You guys are all wrong! Fur, Fish, and Game said coon are all worth $40 a piece. This means if you bring 100 coon in to the buyer, he'll cut you a check for $4000. It's right there in plain english.

Gotta love the "accurate" predictions in FFG! Top coon will go for $40 but it won't go to the furtakers it'll go to the fur brokers.

Jamie, before you pop a blood vein in the side of your head, I'm saying there are 40# coon, and they can be had, IF ya got enough dog to stop em. If I had six months to live and wanted to kill one before I die, I'd head north.

depends as to if u put the coons up right or not... if u just skin em u are lucky to get 5 out of them... fleshed and stretched prime 1s are looking for 15-18 dollars but not holding a promising factuation. the kmarket has been fluctuating so its hard to tell.

I've sold to them a few years past but haven't lately because their stops didn't work out with my schedule. I'm hoping I will be able to meet up with them dec 17 when they come through again. We will see.
Thanks
