I agree with military as well. I was 19 in college and wasnt satisfied and did not know what I was really wanting to do. Needed something to put me into the real world and make me do something. I joined the Army when I was 19. Did almost 4 years. I had nothing going in and now I am about to turn 24 and I have a beautiful wife, nice house, 07 truck thats paid for, boat, quads, dogs, etc. I work on a Air force base now as a DOD civilian and still going to school. . Join the Coast Guard or Navy or Air Force. Try to go for something that you can do when you get out. I was Infantry and that really didnt give me any skills to do anything other than being a cop or fireman. Electronics are good to get into. Not hard to learn and pays great. I am not a nerd but this is the best job I could have. I work with my hands, have great hours, pay, benefits. Its really all because of the Army that molded me into what I am today.

Just my two cents. It is hard to go wrong with a trade school. Learn a good skilled trade. Lineman make a very good living. You are always outside. There is risk involved. Most important, if you dont have a passion for it, it is hard to stick with it. Good Luck Droopy.

I was like you. got out of High School and didnt want anymore schooling, so I went in the Navy for 5 years. Best decision I ever made. I got to live in Japan and in my opinion if couldnt live in the states I would move there. Met my wife there and I got paid to travel the world I have been to about 15 different countries I have been to place most paople never heard of. When i got out I knew what I wanted to do and did it, but it wasnt going to be good enought for me but I stayed there until I could find something better. And at the same time i got another job ontop of that but hated it. So I started over Got a new fulltime job and i loved hunting and wildlife so I started my own taxidermy business part time. Now I have a good full time job (for the time being they are starting to cut way back) and I go home to my own shop and work on wildlife. Something I enjoy doing. I get paid to recreate someones memories for them.....and I get paid good. Its what pays for this crazy hobby of coonhunting that is starting to take over my life. LOL. Point is dont just go and do something cause it pays good or it is convenient cause you will miserable in the long run. FIgure out what you love to do and find a way to make a living even it is a part time gig..hey it is all yours and you are your own boss. JUST MY 2 CENTS

Military IS NOT FOR EVRYBODY. If someone is going to go in the military they have to really want to do it. If they go in cause they feel they NEED to then they will be the ones that are miserable and get nothing out of it. I had guys working for me in the Navy that were just completely lazy had nothing good to say hated evety minute of it and ended up in trouble constently. I always wondered why they joined. In boot camp we had to jump into the pool from a 20 ft diving board and swim a couple laps around the pool and then tread water for ten minutes not using any floatation device. one guy refused to even get in pool cause he was terrified of water.........BUT HE JOINED THE FREAKIN NAVY. He thought maybe he wouldnt have to get on a ship. Guess what he ended up on my ship that I was on and ended up getting out cause he couldnt take it. He just told them he was gay and got out.

The military is not for everyone. I enlisted in the Army National Guard when I was 17 and left for Ft Benning GA 10 days after I graduated high school. It was probably the best thing I ever did. I wouldn't be against the idea that all high school graduates should attend a 3-6 month military academy.
But my time in the National Guard was a waste. This was all pre-911 of course. I won't go into it but outside of boot camp, I didn't care much for my time in the Guard.

I attended some college but the desire to live on my own and pay my own way in life created the need that I had to go to work.

I bounced around a little and finally got into a field that paid decent at the entry level and was something I enjoyed (Utility Locating). I spent 10 years as either an Underground Utility Locator or Cable TV technician. Both paid decent at the entry level but both were filled with constant change and in today's economy constant cuts. Both paid enough that it is tough to get out of the field and find entry level work with similar pay.

Now I'm 31 years old with a small family and looking at what my options are. I'm hoping to go back to school but like you still trying to figure out which direction to go.

The best thing I ever did is marry a woman that knows how to manage money and has a job that pays well.

If all else fails, marry a good woman with a good job.

listen to what old successful people tell you. success is understood here to mean financial success. if you're looking for a job in which you do what you like, forget it. as soon as you start working for someone doing what you like, the job will no longer be fun. of course there are exceptions. you'll have more luck finding something that is satisfying and fulfulling. i went into electronics and became a technician. i hated electronics but i enjoyed everything else about it, such as a/c, inside work, good pay, good benefits, retirement, safe working conditions, opportunity to move into a job that's more satisfying and on and on. what you want to do now may have little bareing on what you wish you had done latter. if you get an education you have optiions. when you get a wife and kids and they want everything under the sun and you will too doing what you enjoy will become a regret.
here's a suggestion i haven't heard, go into nursing. get a two year, associates degree in nursing and you'll be a registered nurse. you can quickly go into nursing supervision or nurse management. you will quickly be making $60,000and have all the overtime you want and free bandads. only two years of school. you might have to do some remedial work but not much. when i suggest this to most men they say they don't like blood, etc, bla bla bla. i say go for it. they need more men in nursing. i helped my wife get into nursing, it isn't that hard nor is nursing.

check out a "diesel mechanic school" i believe it takes about
9 months to complete-- or you can look into a heavy equipment training school--- hope this gives you some good ideas--

My job title until recently was being a district fire technician. I just got promoted to Assistant Fire Management Officer. To sum it up, I manage wildfires and prescribed fire on the Pleasant Hill Ranger District in NW Arkansas. Our district is about 240,000 acres of Forest Service land, and we burn off about 12-14,000 acres a year during the spring. In the summer, I go west on firefighting assignments , to wherever fires happen to start. We live in tent cities, stay in motels occasionally, and work wherever lightning, arson, or accidental fires occur.
If fire and travel don't sound too appealing, you might want to consider timber management with the Forest Service. My brother is a timber marker on the same district, and they mark the individual trees that the loggers come in and cut, and determine where the timber sales need to be located, stuff like that. A good place to look for job vacancies is www.usajobs.gov

Dillon I highly reccomend looking in the nuisance wildlife control field. If you have any experience in trapping then it might fit you as well as it does me. I did a search on google and came up with this website. http://icwdm.org/VendorsService/nc.asp

Its a list of companies in your state that do this kind of work. Maybe call some of your local ones and see if they need help.

if you do choose an out of doors type job, choose one you can do as an old man. it's nice working outdoors when you're young and tough and it's what you want to do. how about when your old and chainsaw is very heavy, it's cold or hot? you're young for only a short while, go to school while you're young. you're old for the rest of your life. and if you get a divorce, as most people do, your wife will get the kids and house and child support. if you can't make anymore money, you're spent.

Va. Tech and N.C. State both have 2 year associates degrees in Agriculture/ Landscaping. It combines classroom and labs and the one at tech you have to do a summer internship. I went through the one at Tech and so did my brother-inlaw.

If you are interested in Agriculture there are lots of jobs that are related but are not farming, at some point in time you will probably want to be more than just a laboror, plus an education opens doors that are otherwise shut. My current job has nothing to do with my occupation but i know that i got hired before people who had nothing but a high school diploma. Looking back one of my biggest regrets was that i did not pursue a Bachelors degree.

I think the first thing you need to do is to decide exactly what you want to do and come up with a written plan of goals, having a set of goals helps you get to where you want to be. If you aren't sure do research until you decide. Earning potential may not be a high priority now but as you get older and have a family it will. I put a high factor on what i enjoy doing, life is too short to work at something that makes you unhappy. Last but not least never say "I wont do so and so." I said I would never work shift work and guess what I work a 12 hour swing shift.

Another vote for the military here. I wanted to go into law enforcement out of high school. Talked to the USAF recruiter. I was a law enforcement k/9 handler on active duty. I, now, have 30 years of law enforcment under my belt. I started the K/9 program here at the Sheriff's Office. I have a pension the day I retire. After my active duty I joined a very active USAF Reserve unit. I have a total of 25 years of military time and will collect my pension from the military and Sheriff's Office on the same day. I will also have medical benefits from the military for the wife and I. I'm not advocating law enforcement per se, but, you can find a job you like, get on the job experience, use tuition assistance while in the military to get your education, use your GI Bill afterwards to advance your education, meet a lot of lifetime friends like Vince said and possibly get to see the world......like I did.

Like these guys are saying Military. That's one of my huge regrets, not going into it. And it'll pay for college.

I would recommend a Forestry program. That's the path I took and for the most part, really like my job. Outside most of the time when the weather is nice, and in the crappy weather I can find enough to do inside (map making, computer forestry stuff, deed research, etc) Haywood Community College in NC has a Forest Technician program that would be worth checking out. Or if you wanted to move away, Allegany College is Western Maryland has an excellent Forestry program

It'll take 2 years of your time to make the rest of your life easier/better.
