These coon are eating bear bait all summer, and acorns and corn fields this time a year. 34 pounds is my best ever, but like Tim said we kill 25 pounders on a very regular basis. We live in pretty big country with minimum hunting pressure. I am sure we have coon several years old that have never heard a hound.

It seams to be letting them breed more than once a year and stay more healthy.
That is why I was asking what those big old things had been eating. I got a 28 lb. coon that wasn't as fat as those. There not common here but there are some and you allways find them were there is a good food supply like town trash.

I dont know, I beleave it has alot to do with being in the north. We Have about 3 maybe 4 corn fields in this county and acorns seem to run heavy every 3 or 4 years. We have exceptional feed this season, but we also kill multiple 28 pounders every season regardless of the mass crop. The diffrence is this year we are killing coon high and dry versus normal seasons were we are all night in the beaver water. Sometime check out the diffrence in coon prices in Northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnasota compared to the rest of the country.

Yea I don't know what it is. I know I got a book from the library on coon and it said there were either 3 or 4 differant breeds of coon in the northern united states and I am sure that has some to do with it. Becouse some were bigger than others.

Well we should stay in the corn fields and acorn ridges, and leave them deep deep cold water coon alone, you could catch the hypothermia, or if you were older than 45 maybe even have your heart attack ya lol.

Bottem line is even if that coon swam 1/2 mile, I remember 3 Cameron dogs quite confidently swimming right under his treed hide.

And yes I have your rifle clip again.

Ken, just so you know, Shep said "why would I hunt the Clute road when I KNOW it's a high moisture situation, I'd rather stay in the oaks on high ground."

If only he'd listen to himself...

Glad your dogs thawed out.

Hey Tim, fact is I had one in the bag and had dry feet before Shep showed up. So it was pretty much his fault.

And Shep I'm well over 45 carried one and drug one, twice as far as you did and still beat you to the truck.

And I can buy a new clip a lot easier than you can find the dog papers I picked up for you today. LOL

sometimes there's plenty of life in them even with a head shot. It can get ugly real fast.

Last year I was hunting with my buddy CJ when we treed a big coon on the edge of a thick swamp. He found the coon and was going to shoot it so I tied one dog to a tree and held the other dog back. I asked if I was far enough back so the coon wouldn't hit me or the dog. It was really thick around the tree and I couldn't tell where he was shining. He said "you're OK, stay there". He shot and I heard branches breaking right above my head. A second later a 25# coon slammed down on my shoulder and head then hit the ground knocking my bump cap off. I couldn't see anything but I could tell all hell was breaking loose under my feet. Coon was squalling, dog was squalling, then I felt the coon climbing my leg so I screamed like a little girl and punched it in the face just as the dog I was holding grabbed the coon again. I tried to get out of the way but the leash was now wrapped around my legs and I fell over backwards. The whole time the other dog was hearing all this going on so you can imagine the noise she was making. I got to my feet and got my light on and could see the situation. My male dog Trooper was covered in blood but had the big boar by the throat. On the way back to the truck Trooper's face had swollen twice it's size on one side and blood was pouring out of his mouth and side of his face. He had broken the big artery in his cheek. CJ said he was going to bleed out but I put pressure on it and in a few minutes the blood stopped. Now I tie my dogs back and shoot them out myself when I hunt with CJ.

Darin, you got Shephardized. He hunts the most ungodly country in all of Northern Michigan. If Jim says you need knee boots wear hip boots. If he says you need hip boots wear waders. If he says you need waders bring a snorkel and wear a wet suit and flippers for your feet. At least you didn't get stuck a mile from the road... oh wait, you did.
