Bubba, I for one see your point. I honestly do. But assigning your most qualified Judges to casts is the lesser of the two evils when you suggest that clubs should assign guides then draw everyone else to it and pick the best person on a card to judge.

You are assuming the most qualified Judges have the best dogs. But there is no assumption in the fact that the casts with the best Judges will have the fewest problems and make for a more enjoyable event for all concerned.

Anyway, it's UKC policy that clubs must assign the most qualified Judges first so that is how clubs must conduct their draw when using hunting judges.

They all have good dogs, these guys never have to draw out with each other!!!! This is what I am getting at guys.

Isn't it the point to bring a good dog? Better bring a good one next time and you won't have to worry about anyone else's dog, only your own. You can only beat the dogs you draw out with, so if you beat the judge's dog problem solved.

I've judged in the last 7 casts I have been on and only won two, one with plus and the other with 0 and all other dogs minues.

Considering a couple were 3 dog casts that is just about right on for the average of 1 in 4.

First off, I think that idea is completely stupid, but that's my opinion. Second, that is the way several clubs and MOH already do it. Third, that is against UKC's procedure for drawing casts.

I understand what you're saying, but the reality is that it may appear that way at that particular club because maybe the same 4 guys always guide and judge, but if any of them venture away from the club to other events chances are they'll draw each other from time to time. Also, if that club holds other registry events, chances are with small turnouts on occasion they'll compete against each other.

I'd like to know what club this is going on at so I can attend they're events because a majority of the UKC events I attend, MOHs and HDs are still drawing guides and selecting judges after the cast is drawn. Pretty obvious when the judge is 3rd or 4th dog on card.

So Marc, you think it's right that a MOH can hand select TWO members of every cast before the random draw even starts?

Not sure what you're refering to. I was replying to bubba's suggestion of drawing casts and then selecting judges.

I think UKC's procedure to draw casts is fine as long as everyone is doing it that way, but I've seen first hand many of them are not.

I follow UKC's procedure to draw casts. Outside of looking at entries to determine what class they are hunting (opens or Nites) everything is selected randomly. Are you suggesting doing it another way?

Please.....

1. Assign your most qualified judges to a cast first.

2. Then draw a guide from the guide pool to any cast that needs a guide.

3. Then draw remaining entries to fill casts.

Very simple.

The basic assumption that the judge will have superior dog power to the non-judges is laughable. Especially in UKC.
I hunted 3 nights last week at an event that drew 100 plus dogs all 3 nights and the judge didn't win any of those casts.

IMO the biggest advantage is knowing the rules and NOT being the judge. Choosing when to open your mouth and when to keep it shut can be the biggest advantage of all.

When your starting out, it may appear the judge has an advantage...to be honest somtimes they do. Imo it is a huge distraction...The again, I have leaned the hard way being distracted is much better than an incompetent judge.

The guys that are always asked to judge are the guys that never have problems on their casts...Wonder why that is?

:)

I disagree, why, because a judge is a judge for a reason(not always) 9 times out of 10 its because they are proven to understand the rules and how they are app. what calls to and not to make and when and where to make them. And just cause a guy is a judge means nothing of the the caliber of dog he is packing Just cause someone is judge doesnt mean he or she has a nice dog and just because he or she has a nice dog does not mean they are gonna be judge. I havent won a cast in a long time and i cant remember the last time i didnt judge a cast.

If I had won every cast I have judged and guided I could just use the trophies and plaques for wall covering instead of paint. Being the judge does not give you an unfair advantage unless you bend the rules to suit the situation. If you do it fairly and correctly then no one should have a complaint like this. I don't think I have ever brought a ? in on a card. May have asked if I scored something right after the hunt for my own knowledge.

Judges

Hey bubba I realize what you are saying. It's not about advantage or disadvantage of judging. It's about the combat between the so called power dogs. Hey in the big hunt you can run but you can't hide. Why because eventually if your winning or you have a dog on a roll you have to face everyone. So just get your dog ready to go in the month of SEPTEMBER, alot of big hunts. Bye BUBBA.
