frog gigging

boy this brings backs some old memories, my hunting buddy and I used to gig frogs and then have a frog leg fry. man that is some good eaing. Here in Okla. if you gig you have to have a fishing license but if you shoot them with a .22 or a bow you must have a hunting license. go figure.

well we are up to 70 frogs total this year.. first night out we got 28( no pictures of these). we would have had alot more but our gigging skills were not up to par..
went out last night and got 42 in 2 hours.. again would have had another 25-30 if we could gig worth a crap.. we saw a bunch more but let alot of the little ones live to gig next year..
found a couple more good spots for this weekend. i cant wait.

ended up with 24.5 (.3 pounds for the basket )
.

any one else doing any of this, this year?

FROGS

USED TO DO IT ALOT. LIKE TO CATCH THEM BY HAND, THEN IF IT WAS REAL LATE WHEN YOU GOT DONE, YOU COULD CLEAN THEM THE NEXT DAY. I HAVEN'T LOOKED AT THE REGS. LATELY, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS A 15 FROG LIMIT IN ILLINOIS, NOT SURE IF THATS THE RIGHT NUMBER, BUT USUALLY IF THERE IS A BAG LIMIT, YOU CAN ONLY HAVE TWICE THAT MANY IN POSSESION. <v>

Giggin

For us it is one big family outing as soon as it opens! We all gig like crazy and them we have a huge fish and frog leg fry on the 4th. I'm always inviting friends to come out with us. It always ends up with funny stories and good times!

Me and my buddy shoot them with a twenty two havent been much this summer but wore them out last summer the most we ever got in one night was like twenty five. You have to be careful where you shoot them or theyll jump in the water and be gone forever. Sometimes we just keep the light on them sneak up and catch them. Fun stuff.

i've been wanting to do some gigging but there aren't many frogs here. also, where can one buy a gig. we have flounder gigs but not the smaller frog gigs. i recall, way back in the day, frogs were everywhere. if you drove on a swamp road you could here them popping as you drove over them. i wonder if there are so few because of the use of insecticides for so long

I bought 3 gigs last summer at the hardware store for around $2 each. This is what they look like

I took some hardwood saplings from a creek and attatched them to the gigs. I gig mostly in ponds and have permission to hit about 23 ponds. We have ponds we hav not touched in 2 years because we have so many producing spots.

My guess is not insecticdes unless ya'll drive hiboys around in the swamps. My guess would be when they were popping under the tires the coons were mighty slim. My guess is also the frogs are slim today because you got more coons than you think but this is just a guess. Coons and little gators maybe. And little gators turn to big gators towreckly and you'll be just like me and can't hunt much in the summer.
