I have two sons that are really into youth comp hunting and Youth Nationals is in Madison, North Carolina this year. I have been getting told alot of stories about all of the poisonous snakes in that area. Here in Indiana snakes are not a big concern for us.

Can anyone tell me if this is something that should be a big concern for us and something that we need to prepare for or are people just telling tales.

If there are that many poisonous snakes in the area why would it be choosen as the site for children and their dogs?

Just wanting to be informed and prepared. Thanks for the information.

We don't bring no snakes to my church!
We do see plenty in the woods though.
Better wear your chaps here all about about 2 months of the year.

i'm not too far from there, hunted up that way a few times. I'm sure there are some snakes up that way but its not like the ground is going to be covered in them. We usually see 4 - 5 a year while hunting but not all of them are poisonous. Theres always a possibility you can come across one, but I think you and your kids should be ok. Tell your kids GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN! Dont listen to all the stories you hear, that is some peoples way of trying to lessen the competition.

He was 5 feet 1 inch. I've seen a few that were close to 6 feet and much thicker than that one.

i've seen only 4 rattlers here in the past 10 years. i suspect one is still living. that one would be dead for sure but i was with a bunch of my liberal friends and i was afraid that might hang me from the first oak tree. i like to keep score. this year it's 5 copperheads, 7 water moccosins to nothing. i spend a lot of time looking for them too. so i would say that there aren't that many snakes out there, around here.

Thank you all for the information, my boys are 14 and 12 and are old enough to be on the alert but I need to be aware of how to instruct them.

It is nice to know that just a little caution is the biggest way to approach this.

As I said before here in our area snakes are of no concern so having information to pass along to them is much appriciated!

LookinUpKennels and 1NightHunter thank you for your input it helps getting information from those that actually live and hunt there, then stories from those that live here and say " well I've heard".

LookinUpKennels I will pass the good luck on to the boys, they are loving the comp hunting!

I have been raised in the Blue Ridge Mts. all my life, and I have heard of them snake services all my life[never been to one THANK GOD!] But they do say you can cross the line[I live in Va.] and go to West Va. or Kentucky and go to churches that still do this. Now, I am a CHRISTIAN, AND I LOVE MY LORD JESUS, but I do not think that JESUS meant for us to handle or play with snakes, ESPECIALLY IN CHURCH!! Some people interpret the scripture in the HOLY BIBLE, where Paul the Apostle,gets bit by the poisonous snake[asp] to mean they too can git bit and live. Now with that being said, I DO BELIEVE WITH ALL OF MY HEART, THAT JESUS DOES PROTECT, HEAL, AND ANSWER OUR PRAYERS! But remember , the Apostle Paul was ACCIDENTALLY BITTEN and had the FAITH, that the LORD JESUS would save him, AND HE DID! BUT HE DID NOT TRY PUT HIMSELF IN HARMS WAY WITH THAT SNAKE
OF HIS OWN FREE WILL. Remember, scripture also tells us to ''NOT TEMPT THE LORD THY GOD'', in other words dont put yourself in harms way on purpose. GOD gives us the sense to know RIGHT from WRONG. Just trust in JESUS to take care of you, and dont INVITE THE BITE. Keep the snakes in the woods and out of THE CHURCHS. GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

I don't like any snakes to begin with, thankfully we don't have numbers of rattlers and cotton mouths and copperheads around here. A few, but not many. But just in case I come across one, I'll lay down the law with my Taurus Judge.

I'd prefer to see a squirrell revival, as opposed to a snake, lol

The only good snake is a dead snake. Idc wat kind it is if I see it it dies. Around here the swamps an beaver ponds are full of them. I have killed a few this year. I don't wear snake boots cause with my health I can't toat the heavy chaps but the good lord looks out for me. I have triped an fell an had them crawl between my arms an give the guy hunting with me a heart attack almost but something keeps telling me to take my dumb butt hunting every night it gets dark

Bushogging today, seen least 5 Water moccasins. Few other snakes .. Killed a 5 ft. rattler about a month ago, had 16 rattlers and a button >killed one a few years ago that 6'1 1/2 inches by a tape measure.Only seen one dog that died from snake bite and that was from a rattler several years ago.. a good size water Moccasin will make a dog so sick he cant walk if he gets hit right.. He will lay around a couple days and usually get over it..Me and another guy was riding 4-wheelers one night he went around me a threw some water a big moccasin was hanging off his trailer hitch ball..It turned and went up threw the frame and came out beside him on the back racks of his wheeler,i hollered he jumped off. No limbs around only had a pistol >had to wait for him to get tired of the wheeler and fall off, to kill it... Can u imagine hunting by your self and feel something touching your back ,look around and its a big ass moccasin on the 4 wheeler with you lol ...Still hunt by myself but if something touches my back out in the open i jump and look back>Cant help it lol

When I hear some of the snake stories from the southern hunters I'm not certain I would enjoy the hunting as much as i do up north. I guess if you grew up around it you don't know any other way so it's just "normal".
