This debate whether or not to tie dogs at a tree can go on forever and everyone has their own opinions and will continue to do what they think is right. I replied that I do tie my dogs back and why I do it. I have read other replies from guys that dont and their reasons also, and we will all do what we want and think is right. I however have never had a problem with tree ability because of tying them back, all my hounds are machine guns on a tree! Actually after I tie them back I think they tree even harder and if I unsnap them they get really intense on a tree. I have another question for everyone, how many let their dogs do battle with every coon they shoot out? I read a lot where guys claim to have a coon fighting and killing machine. I also have noticed that the younger guys that hunt with me love to see a good fight. I myself hate when a hound has to prove himself by fighting with a coon every night. I think that it has to take a toll on a dog over time fighting every night and I dont think this is what its about. This is just my opinion and I'm sure this will get some people fired up but I just wanted to know how many people live for the fight. I did a lot of boxing when I was younger and had 42 fights and I know that it has taken a toll on me over the years and actually took a lot of spunk out of me. If the average coon hunter shoots out say 50 coon a year that is a hell of a bunch of fighting!

My dogs like the fight and they get payed with one when they do an exceptional job or I think it will help there drive on track or tree. Some times a dog needs one and some times it will build more drive by starveing them for a fight. It is all a balanceing act to keep a dog were you want it........I don't like shooting a coon. I like squaling them out...........

Okie I agree with you, I think some dogs do live for a fight and some dogs need a fight now and then, I just don't understand why a lot of guys think all dogs need to fight every coon. I know some guys that have 7 or 8 year old hounds and they purposely wound the coon so he has a lot of fight when he hits the ground. At that age I don't think the dog is in it just for the fight anymore, he trees coon because he loves to hunt and tree coon. I have seen a couple dogs in the last few years that weren't worth a crap on track or tree but they were always there at the tree and ready for the brawl. I know for a fact if this one male hound wasn't given so many coon over a couple of years he would have made a real nice coondog but instead he became just a killer. When you squall them coon do they actually come out of the tree? I have heard it can be done but I never perfected the art myself and I only saw 1 time where a coon ran around in the top of a tree going crazy while a guy was trying to squall him out.

i'll bring one out alive for a young started dog till he learns how to kill it and after that ,i put the bullet between the eyes if possable and only 1 dog is loose at a time, sometimes when a young dog thinks its bad ,i'll leave it loose but stand next to an older dog to make sure the pup dont get ate up or injured coon dont get away ,i will be able to turn the older dog in..i have one old female who had her jaw broke when she was a pup by an older dog(he went to the labortory),she is all coondog but dont have the jaw power to kill a coon so i try to make sure her coon is dead when it hits the ground,we rotate the dogs at the tree on who get to taste fur but most of the time they are dead when they hit the ground.no need to make one suffer if there is not a purpose for it.

Yea they will walk down the trunk a lot of the time but some times the will try to sneak out on a low limb and jump behind were the dogs are so they can run.
There is no real art to squaling. I use what ever I have but like the little green nite lite squaller. They have a higher pitch that sounds like a young coon. Gets sows to come down when the kittens are running real easy.
I don't let the dogs have the mom I just tie the dogs back so they can see she was in the tree they treed on. They know they were right and the coon gets to live. Doesn't cause any problems as long as the dog don't get to chase them into the dark....LOL
The boars will come down to just loud squaling and keep the light in the eyes of any of them. If there is a secret to it that would be it. Get a bright light in there eyes and they will move. If they don't move it is usualy becouse they think they are hidden.
That is why I pack a bright light............even when you think a pup needs a coon. Most the time seeing one come down and get away will do the pup more good........The fight is used to toughen them up and mature them more for me.........That is why I want the coon healthy when it hits the ground.
I guess I got it from dad. A guy was screeming at dad to get in a creek to save his dog once becouse a coon was on its head and its head was under water(Idis Reding from ring wood Ok.) dad told him the the coon won he would take the coon home and feed it. About that time the blue tic made it in. Big splash a tug to shore pealed it off the head and it was all over then......LOL

The dogs get chewed up now and then, but I have dogs that are kill dogs, not bay dogs. Never had to take them to the Vet. This weekend the dogs caught and killed a 28# coon in 3ft of water filled with tullies so thick you couldn't even see em. That isn't a itty bitty coon.

a 28 pound is a big coon no matter where your from lol

When your hide hunting and doing the hides up yourself chances are your going to tie the dogs back so they don't chew the coon up, 99% of dogs will put holes right threw the hide.
Now if we got a tough runner and have a bad shot at him we might leave the dog untied to be sure if he comes out alive he don't get away. Other wise we tie them up so they don't catch ahold of the coon.
