No never tried hunting with a pointer. That's what I have heard, they get out there. The big quail hunts down south have hunters on horseback so I have read. My brother in law had a pointer some years ago, for pheasants he said it sure got them up.....500 yards ahead of him. Someone told him that was what he should hunt behind and he had nothing but frustration with it in the farm land he hunts. I think he needed to get it out more to get the wild hairs run out so when it was time to hunt the dog was ready to do go, of course trying to tell a brother in law what he should do with his dog works like roosters being told to lay eggs. My neighbor is a big fan of Brittanies, he gets them on pheasants up here and out west and quail down south. Those little dogs sure are birdy and stay close to him. I have watched him working with them on penned quail. Myself, I have done some bird hunting with friends who had Labs, it was always fun but their dogs worked within 50 yards mostly. I am by no means any expert in bird dogs but it seems like pointers must have had some hound bred into them for how they get going. We did use my bluetick some for pheasant hunting but only after letting her run and burn off some energy. I am not turning her into a champion coon hound but we do get out and see what there is to hunt.

pointers are hard to beat but you are going to bird hunt them for meat ,u need to break them down and make them hunt close ,and when you get them to that point they are tuff

Craig, I have seen and personally raised whole litters that bit wire and went bug eyed crazy on cage coon at eight weeks old.

Now whether circumstance or genetics, most out of those litters did not make it.

I'd have to say the natural hatred of coon was there, but most of them were lacking other tools to do the complete job.

This comparison is apples to oranges. Coonhounds have to figure more things out on their OWN, then alot of other hunting dogs.

I dont know too many guys that are gonna fool with a tree leaver or a dog that wont go hunting, or a dog that trails around and locates all nite.

My thoughts are the biggest reason alot of coonhounds dont make the grade, is Handler error, followed a close second by Genetics.

You got to know the dogs your breeding! You got to know the GRANDPARENTS, you got to know the GREATGRANDPARENTS, aunts and uncles, etc, etc.

I would agree with you Mr. Mcdonald with all but one thing. You said coon dogs have to figure out more on there own.
My opinion you should had said GOOD COON DOGS seems like more and more are impressed with a layup idiot. I would want one to know how to layup a coon but seems like people are impressed with one that will bust threw the country looking for a layup.
Might make it easier for those of you who know what you are doing to win a comp. hunt though. LOL
