Years ago (not so long ago) we had a ukc hunt on halloween night, i was a non-hunting judge in a Nt. Ch. cast, also was the guide!! We turned the dogs loose on the first dump and within 5 minutes everyone struck and treed. Them dogs were treeing as good as you would want to hear. Upon arriving I told them to handle dogs, and asked a good friend did he want some help and he agreed it would not take long as they were on a small pin oak! I hit the tree with the light and found the biggest black cat you could ever see. Telling them I was sorry about thier luck and scratching them my buddy hollarded we ought to reconsider being it was halloween night might be a chance that was a coon in a cat outfit!!! Of course it did not fly!!! We got back to the club and my GOOD FRIEND told my wife there was a hay ride going on where we were and a bunch of girls were hollaring for me to come and join the party!!! Took some talking but I managed to get things smoothed over with the better half!!!!

Hunting Story

Well I have a ton and a half of spooky stories ( I am the one my kids,nieces/nephews come to when they want to be scared, lol)
Now this isnt real scary but since I got the idea we are talking about hunting stories with a strange twist here goes...
I was about 17 years old and had just left the house to go rabbit hunting with a beagle cross we had. Decided to go up the field road towards the woods. We had just got close to the woods where the path led through them and the dog started acting majorly weird. His hackles went up and he was making these sort of whining noises, looking at me, like " What are YOU waiting for?? Are you crazy? Lets get out of here!!", he refused to go any further. I was curious ( yeah stupid, I know!) and walked a little closer. It was the time of year when the woods were very dense couldnt see very far into them. Anyway, approximately a couple yards in something started to move towards the edge. Something that was NOT small, probably a height of six to seven foot. Slowly like it was either checking out what I was....or stalking possible prey? I dont know. Anyway, the dog had enough, he yelped, turned tail for home. And I was right behind him, any minute expecting something to come charging after us!
I know they say dont run but at that point the FLEE instinct was the strongest one!!
We have had other happenings with this whatever it is since I was a child. But this was the only "hunting" one. Though not the only one to involve a dog. ( As kids our dogs were always with us.) One last thing, with a couple of exceptions the dogs were always terrified of it. Only had three that would even attempt to stand ground, a West Highland White Terrier, a Pit Bull and a Wolf hybrid. Cant explain that either!

Well

I probably shouldnt have said anything, been laughed at before about it.
This has gone on from the time we first moved into the place ( I was four) up to present day ( I am 39 and living about 45 minutes away.) I have posted this in bits and pieces elsewhere, but I guess it cant hurt except to get laughed at again!
My first clear recollection was when I was on a walk with my grandfather and sister along the gravel road in front of our house. We found a huge footprint in the sand where something had stepped up out of the ditch, it made a clear imprint in the soft sand on the other side of the road, looked like it was going up to hill on the other side. I remember kneeling down by it, fascinated but my grandfather couldnt get us back to the house fast enough!! Another time, we had chickens, it was early morning and there was something imitating the rooster crowing, something with a very BIG set of lungs! My bedroom was on the lower floor and scaredy cat that I was, I refused to sleep there for weeks, lol. My mother looked out the window one morning when she was fixing my dad his lunch for work , saw something running across the backyard. We figure this thing came around often cause we always found the dogs huddled in the culvert, shaking, a lot of mornings. Of course there were the usual unexplained sounds, one I will NEVER forget, it was kind of a gravely voice, talking but you couldnt make it out. Very strange.
This spring had a couple of things happen when I was housesitting while my parents were in Europe. Thats when I found out the dogs I have currently werent backing down. My old westie, my daughters wolf hybrid and my sons pitbull.(dont know about the old hound cause he was at my oldest sons.) But the old shepherd cross of my parents huddled in the doghouse in terror.
The dogs went absolutely crazy one morning, this sound was so loud I even heard it from in the house. I went outside and heard it one more time. Kind of a cross between a howl and something else. Extremely loud. The entire time I was there, I took no chances, I put the dogs in the garage at night. One day I was in the chicken coop, I heard something rap on it, and thinking to myself "kids!!" cause something ran by the window kind of hunched over, I only saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought they were messing with me. I went to look around. No kids. Turns out they were all in the house watching a movie. One last thing (though I could probably go on about this forever, little incidents here and there) It was about a year ago, my two older girls wanted me to step out with them to have a smoke (them not me,lol), we went into the back yard, it smelled like sewer, the old dog was again in the dog house. I went back inside to get something, was about run over by two terrified girls when I opened the door!! The smell was bothering them so they decided to go over a different area of the yard and heard something else.
This may sound crazy, but my oldest girl claims it sounded like a monkey. Of course she could have just been paranoid about all the stories she heard. Oh, thought of one more. First, a question. How long do bear walk on their hind legs? Recently, we were on the hwy. close to here and saw something across the river by the woods, just walking, on two feet. My mind wants to think of any explaination that it was a bear. So there you go, hope you enjoyed it somewhat if only for the laugh.

A thought

We have two blackmouth cur pups now, wonder how they will act if they ever have the opportunity to run across it? ( My daughter was set on a hound pup, but I was getting a bmc and we ended up getting littermates. She is pleased with him though.)

Ember, I believe your stories. I aint laughing. Go back and read my post on this same thread. I didnt see anything, but I GUARANTEE YOU I COULDNT PLACE THAT SOUND ON ANY ANIMAL I EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. Niether could my friend. I dont think I've ever been more scared in my life. Extremely loud. Super long howl / cry / scream .......... whatever you wanna call it. The worst part about it was that from the time I started blowing that coon squaller it got closer and closer. I mean FAST too. Soon as we started toward the truck it never made another sound.

Brrr

That gave me the shivers cause I could so very well imagine it.
Well you know, its up to the individual what they believe in, I dont get offended, but I grew up with a father that always said " There is so much more out there than what we know. To think otherwise just shows how arrogant the human race can be". And besides, he always told some great scary stories!

i don't hardly ever get spooked but one night when i was a kid hunting with my dad and grandad we were standing in the middle of an old growed up log road listening for the hounds and a light lite up around us. at first i thought a car or something had pulled up behind us or something but i didn't hear it. we looked around and didn't see anything. you couldn't see where it was coming from or anything. we were just standing in it and then it was gone. the next day we heard about a meter fell and hit the earth some where and thats what caused it. beats me. i believe dave haugh mentioned something about it on here one time.

i live near the tamarack swamps. one of the largest swamps in the country and there are a lot of stories that get generated from it. there used to be a logging town near the swamp in the 1800's that got burned out. there is a tale that on moonlit nights you can see the buildings and hear the saw mill going. also a train supposedly disappered in the swamp and you hear tales of seeing the train resurfacing. but the biggest tale is of george who has lived in the swamp more than a lifetime. when i was a kid the tale was that you could go to the swamp stop your car and yell george three times. your car would quit and you'd hear someone or something pounding on the windows. never tried it myself but the tale is still circulated through the younger generations. but once i went down through there at night for a shortcut over to another place and i saw this old house with a large porch. it looked like someone was standing on the porch leaning against the door. i didn't stop. it was close to midnight. but i went down in there the next day during daylight hours and couldn't find it again.

I have seen this topic on here before, but I have never posted this story.

About two or three years back, hunting in Illinois with my brother an a good friend, were hunting around a place were they say an old indian used to live, and they say he was murdered in his house. We cut the dog in and he struck and treed real quick. My brother and friend went for the dog while I stayed at the truck to skin a coon we had shot earlier. They went in and shot out the coon. My brother went to skinning it, while my friend held onto the dog. Just then they heard moaning noises and the treetops started to sway, and there was no wind that night, big oak trees moving. They said the dog was whining and wanted to get the hech out of there as well. The moaning kept on, and that was as much as they could take. My brother and friend headed for the truck and I mean fast. When they got to me they were everything but running, and I could tell by the look onn their faces that they were not messing around.
That property has now been sold and the owner posted it, but I really don't care because after that night we havn't been back since.

Ember where abouts are you from up there? I am originally from Farmington, moved here to Iowa a while back. I was at a graduation party some time ago and got talking to one of my friends uncles about coon hunting. He asked me if I had ever heard or seen anything strange in the woods. I told him no but that I had seen wierd things in the sky before. He told me this story and he was dead serious- He works for one of the power companies up there and they were I believe running power lines along rairoad tracks in northern Minnesota. He said he was on the ground and his partner was up the pole. He said his partner yelled at him and pointed down the tracks. He told me he saw a Bigfoot standing a couple hundred yards down the tracks. He said it was just standing there watching them, he said he was to scared to do anything but just stare back. He said this went on for a while and then it walked into the woods.

every once in a while we hunt with a friend up in ny state. he lives near a place called brushwood. it is a camp of sorts. the wicans hold meetings there as well as other organizations. also they hold music festivals there from time to time. but every year about the end of summer they have a nudists camp. well our friend's property is on the back side of this brushwood. one night we cut the dogs loose. his old bluetick thunder and our young rascal dog. we heard them strike and run it. then far of we could hear them treed. we were new to coonhunting at this time so we followed our friend and found ourselves entering this camp. well he went boldly where no man should have gone. and we followed him.
now just imagine walking down through a camp with dozens of people sitting around campfires. sounds pretty normal until you add that they had no clothes. and the scary part is most of them should have! they propbably would have looked better. you could tell our friend had done this before because he just walked along giving a nod ot two and answering any inquires with 'sorry, just retrieving our dogs.' we got to the tree and there were a few people there just watching the dogs tree. i really wished they would have been dressed. lol. didn't bother those two blues tho. they just kept on treeing. we gathered up our dog trying not to look at our surroundings then beat feet out of there. when we got back to the road and headed to the truck our friend just chuckled and said 'i knew the dogs would tree there.'
if it hadn't been so funny by that time i propbably would have tied him to a tree at that point. we laugh about that night now. and oh yeah we still let loose behind that camp too.

Anyone ever heard a Lynx shreak?. I was actually walking back from my deer blind in Carp Lake, MI, it's just under the bridge. Freakiest thing I've ever heard in the woods, it sounded like a small kid SCREAMing. Made me think of the Blair Witch Project, when they are in the tent at night, and they hear little kids laughed and hand prints on the outside of their tent. lol

we've let loose behind there at least 2-3 times but haven't had to retrieve our dogs from there. i was really embarressed when it first happened but now i just laugh about it. but if you want to try a new trick try leashing up your dog with one hand while covering your eyes with the other. lol. oh yeah in the fall they have a group up there that has a drum festival so all you hear are drums pounding while you're trying to hear your dog. kind of makes you want to circle the wagons if you know what i mean. lol
