Hi Oli, you sound a little like myself! I too got my start in bird dog training, and still enjoy that type of training more than training a new hound pup. Infact, I'm starting a young Llewellin in the spring and I couldn't be more happy! No late nights hunting for a lost dog...no quill pulling, no deer and yote chases lol. Anyway, I was really down on myself when I first got into hounds because I knew how to train a dog...but my hound wasn't making me happy. That's when I realized it wasn't me, it's the dog. VERY few hounds turn into worthy and true coondogs..VERY FEW. It's an entirely different world. It's almost as if we have to force hounds to tree coons, and only a few will suceed. Bird dogs as you know, almost all turn into a decent bird dog (a few dont but not at all the same percentages). I would say start with a new dog...6 months old, in a month if it's not getting you excited get rid of it and move to another 6 month old...sooner or later you'll find the one. Once you find "the one" you'll realize it's not about training, it's about exposing.

i did and i thank you very much, but my dog is my home boy too, not just a hunter. he sleeps at my bed every night right with my bird dogs. as of now getting rid of him isn't a option. If something were to happen to him i will defiantly try your advice. thank you tho. i was offered to go on a few hunts within a 2 hour drive of here and i hope to take them up. Let him see dogs working, and whats to be expected, he works hard hes just not sure what hes supposed to be looking for. if not, i have a very nice show dog, only 3 wins for grand show champ. so i can at least hang my hat on that, learning from scratch. thank you again

Think about it , plant bird in tall grass and work dog into it. Take coon hide in tall grass work dog into it.

new to coon hunting

welcome to the sport . i'm a walker man myself . i started out 53 years ago with my grand dad , an uncle , and a couple pretty good redbones. i switched to walkers ,about 25 years ago ,and have never had a regrete. maybe someday you'll see the light an switch over too. i never owned a plot. but i've hunted against a few. their not real popular around here .if you get into it , and you ever find yourself in n. e . ohio. look me up. i'm always ready to go hunting. good luck , and keep kicking them loose ,til they cover you up .

Dont get discouraged

Most Important thing is... dont get disouraged and keep taking your dog out, like someone posted set you up some feeders to try and get him going. We ALL started someplace.
