When I was young all I wanted was a dog that would tree coon. As I get older, I look back at the times I had with friends and family. That really seems to stand out the most. I still like putting it on them too. LOL

I love the excitement when he opens up the box and she knows she is headed to the brush! Her tail, windshield wiper i call it, just goes crazy. No matter how bad a day i have had watchin them get excited to go do what they are ment to do, well that puts a spring back in my step. And then just hoping things go well. aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh it is great!

Favorite things

Given that the dog is hitting on all cylinders most nights, my favorite things are all the woods I've seen, I've seen areas of woods I would never have gone to without that dog chasing that coon. Huge Cypress trees, the ones with a hole in the side, looks like an Indian teepee on the inside. Wading water ankle to knee deep, praying it doesn't get deeper. These woods have a magic about them. like they have a secret, a secret few men have experienced. Seeing the moon reflecting on Black River. There's a bend where the river stretches a half mile, and its so beautiful to be there alone. I like getting in there so that I don't know which way the truck is, feeling for that compass around my neck, because I am a little scared. Then make it to the tree, seeing that dog on the wood, hearing that hound music. Putting the amber lense cap on and softly squalling. The eyes shining down. Anyway that's part of what I like about coon hunting.

Feeling the tension relaxing while sitting on the tailgate. Watching a young dog get it right. Great friends. Watching an old dog still doing what they LOVE! The beautiful sights, some shared but most not. So many more things, I agree with pretty much every thing every one else has said.

I guess the best of all , even after all of the years, is when the dogs sit down and call out "Here he is!!!!!"

-Watching a dumb, clumsy pup develop into a high performing competitive athlete.

-The peace and solitude of being in the woods away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, just me, my dog and nature.

-The great friendships from all across the country that would not have developed without Coonhounds.

-Competing in a nite hunt where every handler knows their dog, knows the rules, minuses their own dog before the judge can, busts their but to find every coon any dog in the cast treed, congratulates the cast winner and doesn’t make up a bunch of excuses if he gets beat.

-Witnessing the Coonhunting community open up their hearts and wallets when another Coonhunter is in need. Coonhunters fight, bicker and argue like kids on a playground, but at the end of the day they take care of their own in a big way.

I couldn't agree more with Jerry Moll. Enjoy coonhunting for all the same reasons. Couldn't have said it any better.

i like feeling as if the entire forest is mine and i'm the only one out there with my dogs. i marvel at my dog when all alone she will hunt a mile out there and tree. then i feel the excitment of adventure and challenge calling. not knowing if i'll make it to the dog, hoping the swamp isn't too deep or the brush is too thick to get through. i feel a little tension but a sense of purpose too. i hear her calling me, she's waiting for me and expects me to meet her at the tree. i hope i won't let my deva of the darkness down.
