Not to mention how the shows can bring the whole family together. Kids too little to keep up in the hunts sure learn early how to get the dogs head in one hand and tail in the other and stand real proud! And how many couples have you seen where the man is hunting and the wife is showing? (and in some cases the wife hunting too). When we go to a show it's a family affair. We're not spinning off in three different directions doing our own thing, it's something we all do and enjoy TOGETHER. Just go to www.coonhoundcrew.com and look at the picture on the front page. That's me showing the BIS female at Louisiana State Championships, Dwayne showing the champion of champions female, and 7 year old Jace showing the grand champion female. Our family hit 'em with a triple threat and swept the female classes, then we had to compete against each other! It was one of the proudest days of my life when Jace beat us both with his dog when we showed against each other at Texas Battle Of The Breeds - the judge took one look at the three of us showing for the best redbone and said "well there's the redbone family isn't it?". And Jace will NEVER let us forget that he beat five adults showing to win the champion of champions at his very first time to show with the adults, and to top that off he came back and beat mom and dad!

You know when I first started coonhunting I was 11yrs old. I was new to everything, and the shows were the only thing I could do with my new pup. Yea I started him in the woods and made him a Nt. Ch. but that was after I grew up not the dog. But those shows kept me going to the events and learning more about the sport.

Working that ugly male of mine on the bench and finidhing him to Ch.was something I could do by myself as a kid without Dad having to drive me to the woods. And 13 yrs later I don't show but am still trying to find a dog that will hunt like that old blue dog. For anyone putting down shows saying they suck ect.. think of what you are doing to our sport by discuraging young hunters to participate.

I've said it before & will again. I want MY dogs to look good & hunt both. I have a 10 yr old daughter who is working her pup on the bench everyday. Her goal? To beat Mom on the bench fair & square. She has done it once before & I didn't hear the end of it for 2 wks. I feel that a dog should be able to stand purty on the bench, yes, but they should also know what they are to do in the woods. I won't keep a dog, no matter how purty it is, if it doesn't do good in the woods. Now, that said, I will say this, my dogs don't have to come back with plus points in a nite hunt, to prove that point. I pleasure hunt my dogs & if it takes them 2 hrs to tree 1 coon, so be it. They did their job, maybe not on nite hunt standards, but according to my standards. In my own opinion, I think that nite hunts are ruining some of our real good cold nosed dogs, that time bit thing, makes it tuff on a cold nosed dog that won't give up til they tree their coon. Is a super fast, hot nose dog more of a coondog, then a slower cold nosed dog that won't give up a track? I think not!

Whew, she got you on that one!!HA. But seriosly, it states in the rule book that a judge can, under no circumstances, count off for a dog that has blemishes caused by hunting (torn ears, barb-wire scars, ect. ) I personally like a dog that has these character scars! That rule may not be word for word- I am going off memory!

I'm still working on getting some pictures of Hank on the bench!!
But, he finished out to GRCH and got a 1st place win on 8/30/03. His first show was in December 2002. We finished him out to GRCH in 9 shows.

I think it is good for the person and dog to show. The dog learns to handle good, and learns to be around strange people. The owner learns what it takes to have a hound that is put together nice, and meets some people. Then once you got him going good stick around and give the club some more money and go out at night.
