One that can take an old cold feeder track, work it till he can trail it, burn it up till it disappears, find the end of the track and track it to the tree. With the since to take a better track or trail if one is there or switch to a better one if he comes across one while working the one he started. Do all that with a good loud open mouth and stay treed till I get there or call him.

Everyone likes something different in a dog and theres all kinds of different conditions in this great country of ours that require a different kind of dog to get the job done. Guys with thin coon need a dog that will get deep and can work up a cold track, in my area a hot nosed dog that hunts fairly close will show you more coon. But the question was what makes a good dog and regardless of where you live the answer is a dog that makes you look forward to it getting dark so you can get to the woods.

LOL.........John you are right. If you take a cold nose dog with a lot of drive and put it in a big scent pool and it won't slow down enough to think and work out a problem.
Then if you take a hot nosed dog with out the drive and it isn't going to go far enough to find a track or go fast enough to work it if it does find one.
For here I will take a cold nose dog with the since to slow down and track if need be. I think the cold nose dog would be more track driven and less likely to run threw the country with its head up too and that is what I need here.

Coondog!

Has to be accurate and when it gets 10 degrees and 2 inches of snow it can still tree a coon and be accurate and the rest doesnt matter far has color size etc. etc. and when you look in your freezer there are lots of hides lol.

I have been reading all the replies to this thread and it looks as most have the same view as to what a COONDOG really is. I have only owned 2 in my life. I have owned many titles dogs, but only 2 what i call coondogs. no matter where or when you cut them they will produce a coon and not take all night to do it. many are not fancy, blow the tree down type dogs, but they are super about having a coon and they are a pleasure to hunt. they have sense around the house as well. well mannered in the kennel and the ones i have had are not bouncing off the wall all the time either. calm and all business. have one now that is on its way to making #3 at my home.
