I had Troopers from 1984 stright thru till I changed to the Toyota ..

my 91 has 230k on it and just enough power to pull itself.lol leather AND rear jump seats! but, it looks like little rock yuppies gone coon hunting with that dog box sticking out of the trailer hitch receiver with a bumper sticker that says "coonhunt with english". it will go in a hole with the lockers BUT i did have to be pulled out this spring once, diggin a hole going uphill in the rain. lol

This SUV would be my daily driver. So I don't want it to smell like dogs.

i used to hunt out of a 94 pont. grand prix. i like it except for the dirty or wet dog issue. it's easy to load and unload dogs and all my gear in out of sight and secured in the trunk. it used little gas and had all the luxureries you'd want. now i use a little ford ranger. it's ok too but i'm not comfortable with my gear being exposed. i like the chevy metro ls. i'd like to get one a dedicate it to hunting. just build a partition and gear storage and you can hunt forever on a gallon of gas.

I picked up a 1989 toyota 4runner 4x4 the other week for 500.00 bucks. It has close to 250,000 on it and runs good. My box fits nicely in the back with the back seat down and I open the sides and back window for ventilation. It's great, fun to tear up and the dogs have no problems with striking out of it. No need to do double turns, just smash the gas and take out whatever is in the way.

I started out hunting out of a full size 89 bronco that worked fine and during hunting season when i would head to the Cabin i would use our Expedition for a week or 2.I never had any problem with smell or such but i cleaned it out every other week and would let it air out when ever possible. Plus if you clean your old hound up every once in a while they don't smell so horrible LOL...Also i used towels in the boxes and instead of straw and i washed them up about 2 times a week.

SUV?

I started out hunting out of a 1954 Chrysler which was two years newer than me. Daddy would let me take it coon hunting when I was 12 or 13 years old. On the way home about midnight I did a rolling stop and got pulled. The patrolman sounded worried and asked me, "Where is everybody"? I said just me and my buddy. He said when he pulled us the car was full and the windows being fogged up proved it. "Anyway", he asked,"that thing got brakes?'' and fussed at me for not coming to a complete stop. About that time the dogs started sticking their heads up through the speaker holes between the back seat and the back glass. We had a good laugh about that.

One afternoon we carried a coon to a water race. It ran late and when it was over we put the caged coon in the trunk and stopped to pick up three girls that were going to the same party we were later that night. I don't know how that coon got out of that cage but he came up through the speaker holes with those girls in the back seat. They about broke my neck trying to get out. I'm just glad it was a two door car or they would have got road rash.

I have a 1989 Landcruiser i just got this summer, I stuck two crates in the back and that works just fine. i don't like the stinkin' dogs in there. I had thought about putting one of those carry alls in the reese hitch and building a dog box on it but i am concerned about exhaust fumes. The reason i am concerned is a few times i rode with the back window up and the fumes would suck right inside. Any ideas suggestions?

I used to hunt with a fella that had a older Land Cruiser to hunt out of. It was a tank. Mr Deshazo, me and ol Blue Ice was hunting one night and the dogs got on a dead cow that smelled like it had been dead several days in the middle of the summer. One of the dogs had got on that dang thing and talk about a terrible ride back to the trucks. I thought I was going to puke myself several times!!LOL. But I liked hunting out of it. Seemed easier on the hounds in both hot and cold conditions.

That last sentence is what I really like about hunting out of my Broncos. The dogs are in heat or a/c and I can hear what they're doing while they're riding.
It's a big plus when having to drive 8-14 hrs each way to some of the Nite Hunts. When my husband makes the trip and drives his truck he'll usually ride the dogs in the cab just because they seem less stressed when they get there, which means they hunt better.
I bathe my dogs regularly and I use blankets or sheets in the box/carriers. I wash them frequently, so even if the dogs do get into something smelly it's not in the truck long enough to be a big deal.

Another nice thing about the SUVs is it cuts down on the number of "just checking your license" stops by game wardens. They have no idea there are hounds in the back. LOL

Yep the 92 gets around 11 MPG .. These things are Heavy !!!!

The 92 weighs in at 6500# and the 6 that it has in it is the same 6cyl that they used from 1987 ..

I have been looking into putting in Cummings or Ford Turbo Desel in it when I rebuild it 1 day ... That should make it GO

landcruiser- THE safari machine! [/B Now that you are hunting the BIG HUNTS you better turn loose some of that money you have and buy some tires so the JEEP SCRAMBLER won't have to drive so far to pull you out when the SAFARI MACHINE gets demobilized !!!!!!! ONLY IN A JEEP CJ8

no mo good stories

But in 1981 or 2 there was a gass shortage and I bought a cheap 5speed Nissan (710?) that got 44 MPG. That's a fact. Now everybody getting a " cash for clunkers " come on at 33 MPG. Where is my savior, Mr. Al Gore ? to turn back the clock to the Industrialized age?
