I would not breed a hound that wouldn't make a decent pet. Not all the dogs are going to be GRCH. Those that can't hunt and can't show should be spayed/neutered, and loved, IMO. I won't tell another breeder what to do with his or her hounds, but as for me and my dogs I would much rather have them loved and petted than see them in a hole.
I bought a wonderful female pup a few years back with every intention of hunting her. My health wasn't great at the time, but my husband was the one who was really going to do the work. Well, he came down with a serious health condition and had surgery that had him on light duty for a couple years (he's fine now, thanks) and meanwhile that pup grew and didn't get hunted almost at all, and neither did the others. She didn't even meet a live coon for the first time until she was about 2. But she did get loved and cared for, and she's a part of this family.
She's an absolute love-bug and I'd never do without her. She may still hunt yet. She shows some promise, she trees, she catches rabbits in the yard (you can take the hound out of the hunt but you can't take the hunt out of the hound!!), she's not gun-shy at all, and maybe we'll train her yet, but she's 3 years old and she's a PET. It wasn't what I planned for her, but am I gonna just let her rot in the kennel because I couldn't get her out hunting? Am I gonna give her away? Put her down? No way! Why would I? Nothing makes my heart sing more than sitting on the porch and having her rub her head under my chin until I break out in hives. Dang dog allergy. LOL! She loves me back and will do anything she can to please me. I had a chicken fly the coop yesterday and she spotted it and was about to go after it; all I had to do is say, "No! My chicken!" and she stopped and sat down and awaited further instruction.
Whatever else they may be, my hounds must be pets, too. Not necessarily "just" pets, but they're not "just" competition dogs or "just" fur-catchers, either.
I would prefer any pups I ever sell to go to homes where they're both hunted AND loved as "pets." Given a choice, I'd rather see a dog laying by the fire in the winter than laying on the end of a chain in the summer. But then, we don't do a lot of competition stuff and we don't stud our male out so we don't need to inflate his "stats" by pretending all the culls didn't exist and only acknowledging the ones that ended up in competition homes.
Just my $0.02.
