I appreciate all the feedback on this.
I may add a link to this thread to my article so people can read first hand from a variety of coonhound breeders in their feelings about this so don't be shy. Or, by all means, leave some comments on the article itself for them to see.

I have sold some as pets and I don't regret it at all. I made quite a few families very happy. I get reports back on them that they have been the nicest dogs they ever had and had many of those same people give me good references on my dogs and how they were raised before they got them and how pleased they are with them. Some of my pups went as pleasure dogs only, sure doesn't make the male and females pedigree any better, but I sure made them folks happy. I look at it this way, if the dog gets a good home and the folks are happy with the dog, then I as a breeder, have done my job. I also offer a 1 year guarantee with my pups, which very few breeders do and to date, I have never had to take a pup or dog back that I sold. I had a few that I gave away that the owners wanted to know if I wanted them back and I said Yes! That is how I got Zam back and I wouldn't sell him for no amount of money. The guy quit hunting and offered him back to me and I jumped on it, because I was sorry that I ever left him go in the first place.

So in answer to the question...Yes I would and do.

I would much rather see my pups get hunted. I also hate to see hunters get them and let them stand in a pen.

I have given young dogs who were not cutting it away for pets and would anytime I have a cull that will make a good pet and a home where they will be cared for: they also go with no papers.

I will not knowingly let pups go for "pets"I put to much time and effort into a cross for any pup from the litter not to be given the chance in the woods. How else can you get a true measurement of if you are making good crosses that will improve your line/breed?

I would! Some folks or familys just like having one lay around there farm. Some you sell may as well be pets, that's all a lot turn out to be anyway!

Like two toes said I know some real nice hounds that sleep in the house, lay on your couch and are pets too!

I have no problem with people having a Coonhound as a pet,
There are already more Coonhound pups available than there are Coon hunters to hunt them. What do we do with all of them?

I just had a litter of pups. I own both parents. Paid to performance my sire, and sold the pups for $100.00. The dam threw 12 pups, 3 died. I kept one, gave one to my hunting buddy, sold six to hunters and one to a lady that had a bluetick for a house pet until it got old and died. She wanted another for a pet. Under the right circumstances I do not see the harm in selling one as a pet now and then.....

I am not against people having coon hounds as pets, but many are not aware of energy requirements of yound coon hounds.

I also believe that those dogs should be fixed. I am against any unproven hunting dog being used to bred no matter how good a pedigree it may have ... just my prejudice on the topic.

i think some of this is silly. yeah we all want our pups in the hands of the best trainers & handlers we can get them in BUT HECK 95% NEVER GET A CHANCE ANY WAY !! i only raise 1 or 2 litters a year & mostly want one for myself. i want my pups in as good a hands as possible but before i'l keep one & loose money on it, hey if some one wants a pet & got the money i'l tie a bow on its neck & let it go. i would rather see one have a good home than some of these goof ball coonhunters that are really talented at screwing one up !! then live a life of hell on the trade block !! i have give some culls for pets but disposed of many.

my goal when a pup leaves my house is to have as good a chance to make a coondog as possible & have a good home for the rest of its life. dont always happen but i hate to see a hound mistreated. if it can bring some joy in someones life as a pet laying on the couch & eating potatochips good for the dog !!

I sell puppies to pet homes as well as hunting homes. I've sold to other homes such as rally (and yes, he did well!) and one of my current pups is going into a search and rescue home. I take great pride in my dogs and seeing what I can reproduce. The 'test' of placing them in hunting homes is obvious but there is also value in placing pups into pet homes. I can see better the type of temperaments I'm reproducing. Temperaments are also highly hereditary. I do not sell my pups just to forget where they are or what they are doing. I either get updates voluntarily or I ask for them. It doesn't always guarantee I'll get them but usually I do. I can then track what my lines are producing.

Many 'pet' homes have now begun hunting. And that has been in half or more of the pet homes I've sold to. We take great joy in this. We can also see that those hunt instincts in our dogs is strong when a novice handler goes out hunting and has a great time with a successful hunt.

Lets also not forget that some of the best hunters are pets. My husband's father and grandfather had coonhounds. We aren't new to this. His father and grandfather's best and most noted dogs we spoiled housedogs. My father in law once turned down $5k for such a coonhound. Sadly, the same man who offered that money shot this dog dead because he couldn't convince him to sell the dog. This was when John was in elementary school and a long story in itself but this dog was good enough to be in demand as a hunter and good enough as a pet that he was too priceless to sell. They can be both.

How did you get your start in hunting? Was it handed down in the family as with my husband or were you offered to go hunting? We may sell some of our pups into pet homes but we always offer to let them go hunting, too. I get a lot of gratification from that.

Here's an example: Sold this redbone to a pet home in Chicago. They came back with their friends who wanted to purchase a pup from us as well. They brought their pup along who was, at this point, just over a year old. We wanted to see how he would react to a raccoon hide we had. This super short video shows John (in camo) plopping down the first hide this dog had ever seen and his reaction. His owner (in shorts) was so excited, he took an interest in hunting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DacZRveW_c
Some could say they regretting selling a hound who had such good instincts. I say this was an impressive test for us to have sold a dog who would never see a hide for the first year and then turn on like that. Tells us our breeding program is where it should be.

I sold a pair of pups to a pet home. They bought a bigger house and a bigger car just for the love of these dogs. I get the double prints when they take photos. I'm called 'Grandma Ford' and they showed one of them once just to meet other redbone owners. That pup took best of breed that day with a lot of competition and total inexperience of both dog and owner (who had never even seen a show on tv!). This also told us our breeding program was doing well in the area of conformation.

Pet homes can tell the serious breeder a lot, too. Don't discount them.

As long as a person is taking care of their dog it is not my business if they are hunting them or not.

my thoughts exactly!!! some of those hunters are the same ones that left their dogs tied out in the sun this weekend with no shade and/or water. there was a comment about show dogs earlier, at least those dogs were taken care of.

I would not breed a hound that wouldn't make a decent pet. Not all the dogs are going to be GRCH. Those that can't hunt and can't show should be spayed/neutered, and loved, IMO. I won't tell another breeder what to do with his or her hounds, but as for me and my dogs I would much rather have them loved and petted than see them in a hole.

I bought a wonderful female pup a few years back with every intention of hunting her. My health wasn't great at the time, but my husband was the one who was really going to do the work. Well, he came down with a serious health condition and had surgery that had him on light duty for a couple years (he's fine now, thanks) and meanwhile that pup grew and didn't get hunted almost at all, and neither did the others. She didn't even meet a live coon for the first time until she was about 2. But she did get loved and cared for, and she's a part of this family.

She's an absolute love-bug and I'd never do without her. She may still hunt yet. She shows some promise, she trees, she catches rabbits in the yard (you can take the hound out of the hunt but you can't take the hunt out of the hound!!), she's not gun-shy at all, and maybe we'll train her yet, but she's 3 years old and she's a PET. It wasn't what I planned for her, but am I gonna just let her rot in the kennel because I couldn't get her out hunting? Am I gonna give her away? Put her down? No way! Why would I? Nothing makes my heart sing more than sitting on the porch and having her rub her head under my chin until I break out in hives. Dang dog allergy. LOL! She loves me back and will do anything she can to please me. I had a chicken fly the coop yesterday and she spotted it and was about to go after it; all I had to do is say, "No! My chicken!" and she stopped and sat down and awaited further instruction.

Whatever else they may be, my hounds must be pets, too. Not necessarily "just" pets, but they're not "just" competition dogs or "just" fur-catchers, either.

I would prefer any pups I ever sell to go to homes where they're both hunted AND loved as "pets." Given a choice, I'd rather see a dog laying by the fire in the winter than laying on the end of a chain in the summer. But then, we don't do a lot of competition stuff and we don't stud our male out so we don't need to inflate his "stats" by pretending all the culls didn't exist and only acknowledging the ones that ended up in competition homes.

Just my $0.02.

I don't see any difference between selling a dog to a pet home or a hunting home where the dog doesn't hunted for whatever reason.

the question wasnt wether hounds should be sold strictly as pets, the poll was would you sell your dogs into a pet only home.

there are plenty of puppy peddlers out there, if you just want a pet go to them, but someone that has a serious breeding program in place and only produces a couple of litters a year, i can see why they would want every pup to be given a chance. the folks that make these crosses think each cross just might be that special one, and if it turns out to be, it sure would suck if the freak ended up never being becuase it ended up as a pet solely from the get go.

my pup, and my freedom to sell them to whoever i choose.

I wont even knowingly sell one to someone who only shows and/or pleasure hunts.

My thought was always if you want a pet, get a poodle.

These are working dogs, and as such only the best hunters should be allowed to reproduce. The problem with selling them as pets is before long, the only thing left of there type is how they look. All you have to do is look at all the breeds AKC has RUINED for proof.

It may not be very PC in todays world, but I honestly believe in hunting/breeding the best and burying the rest. One sold as a pet doesnt fit in that program.

I have a balck and tan that my gf fell in love with and wanted to have her own coon dog so what did i do... got the **** thing tried to train it and no use. now it sleeps in bed with us. The dog minds VERY well just don't want anything to do with coon... she is the perfect pet if you want just a pet. coonhounds are breed for hunting but they are still a dog "mans best friend" any dog can be pets in my book
