Every single one does something that makes me nuts. When they go I focus on that one thing that drove me nuts and wish them good riddence.

You all just keep letting your dog that eats crap lick your face, I could care less.

Briar it sounds like you have had many many issues with dogs that go far beyond coon hunting.

for the record, i dont let any dog lick me in the face.

i just find it hard to believe that if you raised one up from a pup, it turned out to be a a nice dog, and over the years you spent 4-5 nights a week in the woods with it one on one, and it gets splattered in the road, you wouldnt feel and emotions.

Do you think it has anything to do with comparing hounds to other types of dogs? Take an average hound kennel with four or five dogs or something. In very rare cases do most guys that coonhunt have their hound in the house. I didn't either. I would still get attached to one but I can understand where someone like Briar...not as much.

Then at the other extreme, take those families with full time house dogs. Or take me for example with two bird dogs that are in the house at night, riding on the front seat of the truck most days, sleeping under the desk at work on occasion....it just seems different. Is it easier to get attached to a dog when they are living with you 24/7 ? I would say so.

I can see this, but I would be more angry that all my work just got ruined than I miss the individual animal. Having to start a new one is a big gamble and a lot of work.

I had a dog as a boy that was a mutt I carried home in the snow for my birthday. I think I was 7. I had to BEG my parents to let me have a dog. That dog was the family pet for 13 years. It went on vacation with us, it rode in the boat, it rode in the car, it slept in the house and begged at the table like any good family pet. As time went on it got a little grumpy, got fleas in the house, had to be let out and let in all the time and by the time I was a teenager I just no longer saw the point of that dog.

Christmas eve the sucker got ran over in front of the house and the cops shot it. My mom was broke up and my dad burried it, but me and my brother never even blinked. Maybe I am a bad person I don't know, but I just don't get attached to animals.

Sorry everyone who loves their dogs.

If you feel dogs are just dogs what do you think of your children? My dogs--all 36 of them are family. I am not some crazy old bat who never had children I did and I have grandchildren that I love to death. My dogs know they are loved and I would do anything to keep them safe. If you feel it is okay for some trigger happy moran to shoot a dog who God forbid got on his property then you have more of a problem then the moran. How can you feel this way about your own animals. Some of you people amaze me. We have never sold a dog, we have made some terrible choices in giving a dog to someone who we thought would take care of them, no more. My dogs are a living breathing animal that I love with all my heart. When they hurt I hurt and when they die I cry like a baby. My dogs just want to make me happy and that is all I ask, which is more than most humans want to do. Have you ever had "just a dog" stab you in the back, commit adulty with your spouse or steal from you--not me. Just my opinion and you are welcome to yours. I just don't agree and evidently you just don't understand. They are not "just a dog". We have 6 big old dogs that live in the house with us. We spend time every day with our dogs in the kennel. We know when they are sick or frightened--we clean their pens daily and feed and water daily. We hire someone to take care of them if we need to be away. If they are just a dog you got the wrong dog.

Some people however Briar go a little too far. A dog is a dog it does not have a soul and people that treat there pets like humans usually all have isues with dipression and lonleyness. However youre making them out to be nothing and that is wayyyy off target. I have had several dogs that i love with all my heart and some amazing footage and meamories with them. Many nights its just me and them and the woods. You can have an amazing bond with a dog BUT remember people there not humans. Most people that treat there dogs like children are so anti-hunting its ridiculous.

Ok people. I didn't post this to start a war, like I didn't see it coming. Can't nobody say nothing anymore without offending someone. Like that deal on here awhile back about that Vetrans memorial in the desert. What a load of crap. That is why this country is where it is today, to many BUNNY HUGGERS. Sorry back to the topic.

TJH you hit that nail on the head.

There aint noway that I can keep a hound around that aint cutting the mustard. If it is a cull it needs dealt with, weather it gets lead poision, or gets sold with no papers and fixed so it can't reporduce. They are bred to be coondogs and if that aint what they are there is no point in them being at my house. As far as those yap yap dogs, house dogs and lap dogs, I have none, and don't plan to have one. Dogs are here for a purpose, and if I can't see a reason to have one I don't have one.

So dogs don't have a soul--what the heck kind of dogs do you people have. I am not against hunting. I spent a lot of nights in the woods with my husband and daughter when we lived up North--went hunting in the winter and trudged through a foot of snow but a dog is more than a nothing. I don't treat my dogs as humans but I treat them with love and respect and anyone that can shoot a dog because it doesn't live up to a human's expectations is one sick puppy and "just a dog". You people just amaze me. The initial post was beautiful and should have just been left alone but no you had to make a big deal out of. I am sure a lot of people feel like you but thank God I don't know many of them. This is a subject that is very dear to my heart and I feel very strongly about what I think and you have the right to your own feelings. My sister was dying of cancer and her dog made the last days of her life special. She did not leave her side for months, she comforted her and loved her--no soul--sure.

Bev you are entitled to your opinion just like anyone else. That being said anyone with 36 dogs who doesn't hunt is a person whose opionion I take with a grain of salt.

Bev no dog has a soul if it did then it would be a human. Dogs have a brain yes and are a very smart animals but anyone who treats a dog like a person has some problems. That's just the flat out truth.

WOW, this is an unbelievable thread!

Briar got it worse than I...but just becuase we say dogs are just dogs, people assume that "we never have had a good dog", that there's a "lack in the owner department", and that we're "tough guys" or have "issues". Why the insults people? I could say that someone who is in love with their dog to the point of considering it their child is crazy. We could say that if you think a dog is your equal, that you shouldn't be allowed to breed a dog because with breeding comes culling...it's part of the package. Can you shoot your buddy in the head and walk away? If they're more than dogs I bet you cant. What's with all the bleeding heart babies out there?? Give me a break.

For the record, I have a few hounds and I promise you one thing...if the dog is junk it doesn't stay here and it doesn't get sold...it gets put in a hole in the ground. All my dogs will perform as they should or they're gone. My hounds arent the best on earth but they suit me just fine and are probably better than what allot of people have. I've got an old bird dog that I raise as a pup...he's 12 now. He's shown me more birds than any of you people can imagine...he retired now and living his days out on the couch. He's my buddy but still just a dog and in no way as important as a human...and is not considered my child as a few crazys on here think of their dogs.

If my hound gets splattered by a car I'm not walking out of the woods crying, it's offsetting but that's part of life. Stuff is born and killed every day. If a hound breaks through thin ice, I'm staying on the bank. No dog life is close to being worth a human life. Anyone who thinks they're equal is a big idiot.

Real nice when bleeding heart babies attack people for thinking that a dog life is just a dog life and nothing more. WOW. I'm a little shocked at how many babies are out there. Interesting that the few people who are on here claiming dogs are so much more and also are breeders are cranking out junk. If you cant cull...you either have a yard full of garbage or you peddle garbage off on others.

This post will probably get me banned, but I'd rather be banned that be lumped in with irrational weirdos that think dogs are "much more than dogs"....BoooHoooo!

You are sick---your opinion is yours and mine is mine. Why have the animals if they mean nothing to you--I just don't get it. Animals are a precious commodity put on earth--not just for the doing of man's deeds--again, just my opinion. We are supposed to take care of and protect our animals not shoot them in the head because they didn't tree the coon like you think they should.
I am a bleeding heart and a boohoo if you want to call me that but I at least have compassion and love for all creatures whether they do my bidding to my liking or not. If you can live with shooting a healthy animal because it doesn't please you then more power to you. Enough said.

Briar it aint your fault. Everybody has an opinion, but some people just can't handle the way others feel about things. They can't just state their thoughts, without bashing someone else.

A little more of this Rude behavior and I'll have this post deleted.

It may be just a dog to you and thats okay. but you'll never be "just a human" or "just a meal ticket" to your dog. Sure they dont have a brain to reason and rationalize things like we do, and yes they like poop and dead stuff because they are dogs. They arent man made so they arent perfect. But to your dog, your his world. You feed him, you keep him alive, he looks to you for guidance.
Your dog may tree a possum first drop, and all those other quirks of his, but at the end of the day doesnt he follow you back home? He only does that because he loves you.
I'm not arguing, just letting you see the dog's point of view.

Why is it that when the dogs tree a possum , run a deer , catch a skunk , etc. , It's ok to say " They're just dogs "?
