A true coondog can get it done anywhere,That has been my experience.My Warrior dog won casts in Michigan,Georgia,Indiana,Arkansas and all parts in between.So have others I own...JMO

I've read all these north vs south threads and I don't believe this has been mentioned yet. My dog looks decent in the south but struggles up north. Why? Bc he's trained to run a creek or drainage. He's out of patch woods in 5 minutes in a straight line and I don't have to tell ya'll it won't get you many wins. After a few nights he starts getting used to it but NEVER the first night. It takes a special kind of hound to adapt AND EXCEL on the go north to south or vice versa. Jmo

It is a matter of what your hound is aqainted with in his mind. southern hounds unless your hunting in the Pecan orcherds of GA are more prone to hunt to water, and if there is no water they will B-line to get there some times. My Cur Dog had been hunted on Squirrle most of his life untill i started hunting him on coon. and now if there is some water close guess where he goes
they learn where the game is and thats where they go looking for it. I dont have any dought he would tree a corn sack full of those northern coons becaue he knows how to patch hunt . but he can hunt a branch as well because he has learned how to ajust to booth .
The strait lining hound most likly wont do or show as good in thick coons for that reason, but in the same respect the patch hunting dog has to figure out some times you have to go yander to tree one

All that to say this NO ! i wouldent Buy a Northern hound unless i knew what kind of Hunter he was, if he was a Head up get going hound he might do fine here but if hes going to Bird dog hunt he might not do as well here jmop

I laugh hysterically every time I see this southern dogs are better than northern dogs thing. Up until 3 years ago I lived in Iowa. Now I live in Tennessee. When I moved down here I had an 8 year old walker female THAT WAS BORN, BRED, TRAINED, AND HUNTED in Iowa. She came from Terry Daniels stock so guess what? All of her ancestors for several generations were BORN, BRED,TRAINED, AND HUNTED IN IOWA. Now she wasn't a bad hound but was definately not the best "NORTHERN DOG" I ever owned. The first night I took her hunting in tennessee she treed 4 coon in a couple hours. She is now 11 and guess what? That worthless old cull of a northern hound is still treeing coons in the south and making it look easy.

I think if it is a good coondog that it will adjust to the area. I know a man that bought a dog that is talked about a lot for a big price. Down here he looked bad. He slicked treed about every 10 minutes and it could not be corrected. Only saw 3 coons over him in more than 50 nights. But up north he is great and won some fairly big hunts. I hear he is back up north and back to his old self. This don't make him a sorry coondog, he just needs to stay up north.

I'm sure some southern coondogs get smoked up north.

I always was told it was best to buy a pups and dogs from someone close that wins a lot.

Thats rite on the money casey it does go both ways on the majority of your dogs that go from n2s or s2n but ifn they are an al around balanced hound they will do ther thing where ever they are put down

We know it if we know were we are hunting, we know if there are coons there or not! same as you know in those patches up there. iv been following hounds a long time , he can fool me once or twice but he ant gona out smart me many times

Coon huntin was started here in the SOUTH, its part of our culture, its who we are. If you doubt it read UKCs history on the breeds of coonhounds. The black & tan started in VIRGINIA, the redbone in GEORGIA, the bluetick ( which was a gift from France to George Washington) got its start in VIRGINIA, the plott in NORTH CAROLINA, the walker in KENTUCKY, the ENGLISH which was made of crosses of blueticks & walkers in the SOUTH, and the LEOPARD which has a long history in the deep south. So remember if you are coon hunting in the north remember to thank us SOUTHERN BOYS.

In my personal experience, I have seen it go both ways, but I've seen more hounds that couldn't get it done going north to south rather than vise versa...

what i see is i wood only do younger dogs they adapt better and quicker to it but it usually takes them 2 weeks to figure out how to hunt

All of Michigan is not patchwoods. Here in west central and north is a lot of big country and water not as many coon at southern Michigan and northern Indiana. Our dogs have to go hunting to tree coon and not having much problems treeing coons in this weather now how about you southern boys treeing any coons in these teen and below teen temps?
