I am surprized to see all of the folks that hunt alone. I hunt alone alot also. I like to do things my way and I don't like to expose my young dogs to other guys dogs that may have faults I don't want my young dog to learn. It is good to go with buddies some times but a good hunting buddy is hard to find.
I do carry my cell phone with me at all times and I was glad to have it the night I fell and broke my leg while hunting alone.

Now, there are times I like to be alone, and I have had some very memorable hunts alone.

I also like to hunt with buddies too. Fellowship is also very important to me.

The best, it doesn't matter what kind of hunting either, is with my sons! Watching the excitment in your children's faces is the best!

I took 4 boys ages 17-9 hunting about two weeks ago. We didn't have a great hunt, but I bet they will remember that little two mile jaunt for awhile.lol

My wife makes me buckle an extra tracking collar on to my belt, so if something happens, they will be able to borrow a reciever & find me hopefully before the coyotes do. LOL

Another good thing about hunting by yourself is that you can go hunting & come home on your schedule.

The missus keeps talking about chipping and dipping before and after hunts... thank God, she hasn't thought about clipping.

ALONE

Here lately I've been hunting alone .. At first I didn't much care for it. But the last few times going I have found that it has helped me understand my dog.. He's 9-months old, I knew he could track and tree with the old dogs, but I never tried him alone. till one night I was loaded up ready too go hunting with some guys, and they didn't call or show up. So I went hunting by my self.. He didn't get real deep the first couple of turnout, but now just a few weeks later he's tracked and treed 4-coons last week by his self.. It's helped both of us alot by hunting alone..

I hunt about 75% of the time by myself you can really learn what the dogs are doing unless you sit and talk to yourself and arent listening

Usually DH and I go together.

I would love to hunt alone more often, not because I want to leave him at home, but because I want to get some young dogs out a bit more often.

However...it can be scary out there in the woods by yourself! The dogs run off to do their thing, and I am VERY by myself for a while!

One time, one of my hounds treed about ON TOP of a little pup tent at about midnight! I about freaked, and waited anxiously for some big strapping Mountain Man to come out of there with a big gun. (Plenty of people around here bring guns out to check out noise or 'issues!')

After about 5 minutes, when no one 'woke up' and came out of the tent at me, I got my dog off the tree and high-tailed it outa there.

Turns out, the farmer had ALSO given permission for some guys to turkey hunt, and they used the tent during the day to turkey hunt! Whew! DH and our friend who owns that land got a big laugh out of that one! Me, I was still recovering from a fear factor!

Anyway....big, or even smaller, strapping guy, against me, measly little woman....I dunno. (And I ride horses-jumpers- too, but for some reason, in the woods, I don't feel that strong! Guess I could always squeal like a broodmare and kick or something!) If my hounds are with me, no problem! 2-3 big black dogs, NO ONE messes with me!

But if they are off tracking and I run into the wrong sort, could be dicey for me and I am not stupid. The world is just not the same place it was when I was a kid growing up, and you could run all over the county with your friends and not worry about it!

So....one solution...when I do hunt alone, I also take one of our border collies, who will also hunt, but more like a springer spaniel, staying pretty close to me! Of course, border collie is no threat to another person, doesn't even look or act scary! But *I* feel better having a dog with me! <g>

I hunt alone about 1/3 of the time. I can hunt real close to my house, oftentimes on my own land, so its not a real big deal. If the weather is ok and noone shows up, I am not going to sit in the house when there are dogs to be trained just because noone comes by. I do always carry a gps, a cell phone, and compasses. I try to let someone know where I am going too so in case I don't return in a timely fashion someone will come looking. Sometimes hunting with other people can be a bit of a dither when each buddy has one or two broke dogs and one or two yoiung dogs and then it becomes 3 ring circus with all those dogs. I like no more than two broke dogs and maybe one young or started dog

I hunt alone 98% of the time. The other 2% is at a hunt. Noone really lives close enough to go without one of us having to drive 30-45 minutes. Sure does make a dog independant.
