It's been around 7:30 here in Amelia and Cumberland. Anyone else hunt Cumberland State Forest? We have land that borders it, and the coons are plentiful, but seems they always cross that Willis River and thats nothing but swamp and briars...not real enjoyable at all...in fact, I lost my GPS in that swamp last night...I dont think I'll hunt towards the river at all anymore.

Jay Bird,

I havent hunted the Cumberland Forest yet but I did drive through and scope out a few spots I'd like to try around a few of the ponds and bridges. I'm either going to try them out tonight or hunt the Amelia and Powhatan WMA's.

You do any good last night? It was way too cold for me so I just stayed home and worked them on the bench some to get ready for the show tomorrow in Mineral.

Corey

Treed 1 Wed. night in that dang swamp..Took 2 hours to get back out all the water and briars though...That was some tough hunting. I was thinking that the coons may head that way because they probably get a lot of pressure from the coon club in Cumberland. Not sure if those guys hunt there for sure though.I'm going to start hunting my 3 year old dog by herself as she hunts a lot closer by herself and just work with the pup by himself..He probably needs that anyway. I hunted the other night at Amelia Wildlife, and the dog crossed the river. That made for a long night also...Part of the game. I'm on night work now, so I'll probably get out again Tuesday night. You ever do much at Powhatan Wildlife? I used to rabbit hunt there a lot by their main office, but never tried coon hunting in that area.

If you are having problems getting across rivers and swamps to retrieve your dogs, get an inflatable raft and store it in your truck. I hunt a lot of rivers and swamps and the raft often comes in handy. I also have chest waders. My raft will hold two people and 2 or 3 dogs. I'm heading for Mineral UKC hunt tonight. Hope to see you there.

If coonhunting was easy everyone would do it, haha. I had one of those nights myself last night. Dog just didnt act right from the begining and I spent alot of time just trying to catch him. All part of the game.

I think cumberland forest does get a fair amount of pressure from the club there but I'm not sure exactly how much. All the times I've been to competitions there I have only been taken to the state forest twice.

I dont usually have alot of luck at Powhatan WMA, but sometimes we find one near the swamp. Since they put that electronic gate up in Amelia though I've lost a couple of my better spots so I'm trying to find some new ones.

Wayne that is a great idea with the raft. There have been several nights that would have really come in handy!

Glad to hear about the VA hunters. I hope everyone has some good hunts comming up. We went last night but didn't even make a tree. The dogs got behind a house and it sounded like they had 100 dogs up there. We couldn't half hear and ended up just going in to catch them. But you have to take the good and the bad in this sport!

We treed one last night. The dogs treed it about 900 yards from where we turned loose.

Good luck to those going to Mineral tonight.
