Compare that to having to drive 4-5 hours to an RQE, 6-8 hours to a Zone, & 15 hours or more to the World hunt. I'll bet your young BUTT wouldn't be making many of those trips, just like alot of the good dog owners out west, down south, & up in the northeast don't/won't do.

I know that when I still lived out in Oklahoma, we sort of felt OSTRASIZED when it came to the World Hunt & they were still throwing us a BONE every few years by holding the World Hunt out that way. One year I even got a WILD HAIR to hunt at the WINTER CLASSIC. I left by myself, when school got out on a Fri. evening, after an 18-19 hour drive I got there. That night I hunted in Florida, got a couple a hours of sleep & took out back for Oklahoma. I had to be at school at 7:00 the next morning, & I made it as far as Clarksville, Ark. & had to pull over & get a little sleep. Needless to say I didn't make it to school on time the next morning.

The biggest hunts out that way is Ada Walker Days & the Texas State Championship. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that alot of good dogs never make it to the larger Hunts back east, because of the driving distance. There were quite a few guys that I knew out there that wouldn't even, go to a RQE/Zone with their dogs because they were not going to drive all over to try an get quilified for the World Hunt, & it wasn't because their dogs were not good enough.

Marv ought to know the answer to this question, & that is in the last 35 years how many of Russ Bellers dogs were breed, raised, trained & hunted by Russ in Indiana.

THEIR ARE ALOT OF NICE HOUNDS THAT DONT MAKE IT TO THE BIG HUNTS IT TAKE ALOT OF$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Russ has never been picky where they came from or who raised or started them, and obviously who hunts them. At one time if he couldnt beat them he bought them. The past 20 yrs he has stayed pretty much with his own line of dogs, with the Handsome Deamon dog being the lone exception that I can think of. He doesnt raise any pups or start them. He tries to get them in good hands and then buys them back if he hears of a special one. He then hunts it himself for awhile and if he thinks they can win he passes it along to one of his cronies and he looks for another one.
If he dont think they can win, I get them. lol

The homecourt is a definate atvantage in just about any sport that I can think of, and coonhunting is no exception.
I look for a young dog best suited for where I hunt and Bellars dogs probably work as good as any here. I never really did understand why anyone would go across the country to get a line of dogs that wrks well in a different part of the country instead of getting one from a succesful line in their own backyard where the dog will be hunted 99% of its life.
Now if I have this dog on top of its game come world hunt time and the hunt is being held somewhere close with the same type of terrain, coon population, etc... I have a huge advantage over someone hauling their dog in here to my backyard from a totaly different envirement. You are almost gonna have to get lucky to beat me, even though you may have a superior dog on neutral turf or your back yard.

Its because Indiana doesn't do Daylight Savings time so they get an extra hour of darkness a night to train their hounds.

I would be willing to say that if you figured up the percentages Indiana has probably produced more winners of big hunts than any other state.
Hillbilly Mac is one you all missed.John Gossett won a SS with Chic I believe.
Jim Ridge has won a big hunt or two.
I believe Tar Nailor might have had an IN address when he won a SS.
Anyone mention Hardwood Henry?
Tim Whitaker has won a big hunt or two with the B&T's.
How many IN dogs have won AO?
Greedo,Watsons Buck,Steve Austin 3:16.
KY is probably in 2nd place if they aint in the lead, lot of big name dogs from the Bluegrass state.
You figure up all the World hunts,AO,Winter Classics,Breed days,I will bet Indiana dogs come out on top.

Ok, I am jumping in. I do not agree that most of the winning dogs come from Indiana. And I certianly do not agree that you can step out your back door and train your pup in thick coon along with thirty nights of hunting. What I do know is,like myself, there are a lot of guys in our state that hunt hard, train hard and work hard. I am sure that other states can say the same. If it was a easy as Smokey seems to think, Everybody would move to Indiana to raise dogs. They could make a fortune. I am beginning to see why Smokey has the nik-name he has. I think him smokey dopey.LOL

Its a numbers thing, I think. More coonhunters plus more coons plus more big hunts equals more top dogs.
