Ive used a bunch of different kinds and like my QT 6000 the best.

I have several different types of collars I use with it, and like the QT collar or Johnsons the best.

A close second would be the TRX3 reciever and changable battery collars. I used one for along time and liked it.


Its just too handy to pull this QT6000 out and be able to track pretty much any collar off the shelf and do it accuratly.


They have along way to go before I would ever trust it enough to turn a dog loose with just it, but I have thought about a Garmin just for the tracks feature and as a GPS unit.

I have the Maxima 5000 with Marshall collars and I got an antenna to hook up if needed. I'll never go back to the big ones again. The Maxima works good for me and is just so handy.

Justin Smith----------You must have alot thicker coons there than we do here if you never have any need for a tracking system. Not uncoomon here for a dog to go four of five miles to get struck. You need a tracking system sometimes just to figure out which way they are headed. As far as systems go, I have a Tracker Maxima and a Garmin. I run Marshall collars with my Tracker, and have tracked dogs up to 10 miles. Garmin is reliable to 1 mile, and I have gotten up to 2.5 miles with the external antenna.

 tracker

Quick Track - 6000 with 3 Quick Track Collars, with 2 antennas, one small and one 3 element yagi, can velcrow unit from one antenna to the other whenever needed. Can't beat it !!!!!!

Coons don't cover that kind of ground in one night ... you gotta turn em' loose where there are coon at least and then if they don't strike you can always load up and go try another turnout .... a coondog that is running four miles to get struck sure aint actually looking for a coon the first three miles he's loping down the creek .

LOL!! You apparently are used tohunting areas where coons are thick and apparently arent pressured enough to run and leave the country before they decide to hit a tree.

I have a garmin astro and love it, the farthest ive tested it @ was 4.5 miles and still had no trouble pickin up signal.

I dont see how some pick up so far...All the ones I've been around get 1 mile average...Although I've heard a couple people say they get 4 miles..May be a few souped up ones out there..

I use a coat hanger and a magnet if I don't find my dogs quick enough at least I've got something to whoop em with and I never have to buy batteries. Actually I like the convience of the Tracker Maxima or Classic. I'm not saying it picks up 20 miles but at least you don't have to walk 10 miles back to your truck before you start tracking.

LOL , uhhh ..... where I'm from a coon is a small mammal with a ring tail ... and a good dog is supposed to be faster .

If my dogs get out of range of my Garmin there is a problem.
Tracy is saying 1.5 miles with the collar in his house and him driving away.
We have yet to flat out lose signal on the dogs while out huntin.
Garmin is the best it has allowed me to drive around to the dogs and avoid alot of crap.

Just, I see you are one of those know it all computer hunters. Feel free to come to East Tennessee and see how it really is here in the Mountains where the coon are pressured hard and they know better than to hit a tree. After hunting the flat country you will swear these dogs are running a deer, as fast as they leave coutry and get on the backside of a mountain out of hearing.

It will make your flat country,river bottom, grand champion coonhound look like an idiot.

Not picking sides, but just my 2 cents... there's not a coon alive that will run 4 or 5 miles with a dog on it. Coon dont venture very far from their dens either, the more food available, the less they travel. During peek berry crops, they wont move more than a few hundred yards to feed and water before heading home. Ever wonder why so mnay on here mention treeing dens? Coon just dont roam far from home, and will move their den if they really need to travel. With that said, I always use a tracker...cuz my dogs arent always on a coon when they've traveled 5 miles from where I dropped em

For equipment, I use a Johnson Merlin with Johnson collars. Very reliable, and has great range...I wish it were smaller and easier to take to the woods with me but, on a good night I wont even need to take it out of the truck.

nicely put! I want a dog thats gonna get out and tree me a coon, but at the same time i aint turnin my dog loose in this section to hunt the next one if you know what im saying.

You know the truth of the matter is it's not which system you use but that you have/use one. In todays world just throwing an old coat down and picking ole houndy up in the morning just don't work. I hardly ever use my tracker but the peace of mind I get from it is hard to beat.

 Hey Mike

I have had great luck with my Tracker Maxima, Love it.
Mine is the old Model, they have a new model out now thats supposed to be even better. You can even plug one of those big intennas into it now, to help find your dogs in the next county and drive close eneough to shock them off the deer. Good luck.

Like I said earlier,......When the food is scarce (late winter)and the coons are traveling to eat and find enough to get by feel free to come by Eats Tennessee and see how far a dog may run a coon before it hits a tree. Your dogs could be treed less than 1 mile away and be completely out of hearing.

My Dad is from Johnson City Tenn. and he said he never had a coon go five miles before it climbed. He said his dogs ran deer and fox that far ,but never a coon. I am not trying to start anything but five miles is along way. If my dogs went that far I would take off all my collars and say GOODBYE!

Yadkin man....I believe you would be hard pressed to find where I ever said a coon ran 5 miles.

According to my friends Garmin GPS our dogs have regularly ran a coon track 1.5-2.5 miles before treeing.

Like I said...come down here to the Mtns where you either climb up or slide down and lets see how far they run in the late seasons.
