i started coonhunting in the late 70s -- i went thru quite a few local dogs before i got one that would tree -maybe this isnt fair because i mostly hunted any dog i could get my hands on and a lot of them were somebody elses culls lol
its easier to start over then fix one with problems sometimes

- i owned a rope bag and a rolling cage- -- i laid drags- i got down on knees and barked up like a dog --like somebody mentioned john wick said -lol dogs werent that many generations away from foxhounds then--i dont mean foxhounds of today - they would boo around on a fox until you could get a shot at them- slow track dogs --- they were accurate and our coon are fat and lazy -so we got hides with them if they could tree - im not saying all dogs were slow but i saw a lot of them -and i dont see much of that anymore
i think nitehunts and breeding for nite hunts improved the treeing and speed in our hounds-especially 20 years a go --at least the dogs i saw -

-i like the dogs of today-

i do train a little different -

now this business of a dog getting treed alone- a dog kicking dirt in your face and getting treed- "getting wooded "at all costs - a guy told me once ---"i dont care if he trees on a cornstalk-he better stay there -"

i think this stuff has gone a little too far-

i want to run something rite here- i want to start this cold track --not search for a hot one

i want my dogs to work as a pack - need cold nosed .fast track dogs, with some brains- , if he trees- there better be something in that tree 90% of the time at least -

not sure the nitehunts are helpng get that type dogs as much as they could be lol

I'm of the opinion it's a lack of tracking ability based on my own experience. I won't try to beat slick treeing out of a dog anymore than I would try to beat treeing into a dog. I coon hunt but when I look for a dog I try to get one with big game blood cause big game hunters will not tolerate slicks. Seems to work for me, I shot 41 coon this fall and walked to one slick tree....... and the old dog got a talkin to for that.

I think the hunts should go to " The first track struck , is the only track that counts."

It would make the other guys stand up and minus the babbler.
It would make 'em breed for dogs to take the first track they came to ( everyone wanting first strike ).
And it would make them breed for track speed ( everyone wanting first tree ).
But , that's probably just me. LOL

With these " independant " type dogs , it's hard to tell what kind of track speed you're breeding for if the dogs won't run the same track.
