Perry, Would like to take you up on that hunt you offered Justin. But, mine is 10 months old and would like to hunt against one close to the same age. Just to see how he stacks up.

Leopard Cur

After 25 Years of following Leopard Curs and Hunting With Every Breed. I have come to one Conclusion.
Most people think a Cur is a Hot nosed, Close hunting dog.
Or do you hunt Squirrels? Is the most asked Question.

If you want to test the metal of your cold nosed dog, Hunt with a Leopard when the ground is frozen and covered with frost.

Several people have, for years said, the only way I will Register a Leopard with UKC. Is if I can hunt with the other Six hound Breeds! I do not Competition Hunt. But the members Want this.

If this breed was named Leopard Hound, 40 years ago, It would probably have been the seventh breed in UKC.

Jerry

I have seen some curs really do some bang up work on a cold track and we had a cur/hound that was simply unbelievable. She is what made me give the curs a try. Where coon are thick a cur will hang with any hound and beat most. But , for the most part a cur doesn't have the single minded hunting instinct that a hound does and they are slower to mature and take more time to train. I also don't think any cur promoter could honestly call any cur breed deep hunters.

But , if people want to tell the world about every hunt they have won ..every hound they beat ..and every coon they've tree then ..toooot , tooooot !!! Just keep in mind that anybody who has been around a while knows to keep an eye on the people /dogs that are doing all the bragging for themselves and don't have any faults.

never hunted with a leopard cur, but have been with many Mt.CURS . i have been with john stuarts dogs and fred suaers. and many others just can't name all of them. bottom line is if they let them draw out together you will see alot of these big name hound breeders crying,
oh yes justin the walker you are talking about that won the pkc events. that was hard knockin tom. that was also the heavy weight class. there was a world champion MT. CUR. in the middle bracket.
study up.

It won't be long now and the fiest people will be saying the cur hunters are afraid to hunt against them .... let's get in on this before it's too late .

If being a cur coon champion meant much then the cur people wouldn't be wanting to hunt against the hounds for one of their titles. It tells off on the level of competition in the cur hunts.

curs and feist

FYI,
they have been doing this for 3 years they hunt the curs and feist together at the hunts.
it is funny that in the pkc hunt, and some of the ukc hunts mentioned. with hundreds of hounds and the % of curs in the hunt. you see the cur make it further than most of the big time blow bag breeders.
look at john wick he was one of the biggest guys in the walker breed (started the stlyish dogs) and look what he is running full page ads on in full cry. one of those no good curs. lol

hunt what you feed.

Coonhounds vs. Curs

Here in my area every fall we have what we call our own "Battle of the Breeds".

The cur club in Hartville, MO will sponsor this hunt. To make a long story short the cur guys challenge the hound guys to a one night hunt, they randomly draw cast to have hounds and curs together and go hunting. For the record over the past eight years, it's a tie between the hounds and curs, four to four. I say the cur dogs can hold their own but for my own preference, I'll stick with the hounds.

I live two towns over from a man named Mr. Jackson he owns cur dogs ,she has past on now but at one time he owned a world coon ch cur named Ellie. She was also a sq. world champ,he hunted her with our hounds at our club hunts and won some of them. his curs could tree alot of coon but they were close hunters and some times didnt like to hunt with strange dogs. I have never owned a cur and dought that I ever will but I wouldnt mind getting beat by one if it did a better job then my hound, but I think its foolsh to think that curs are going to make fools of the hounds in the hunts. On the same hand it wouldnt be very smart to think that they wouldnt win. I'm sure the curs are just like the hounds some go deep some dont ,some are hot nosed some are not.

i believe on any given night with a break or two any half way decent coon dog can pull off a win .i did not say win consistently but it may just be their night.i guess what i want is the option when ukc takes my money.i have seen dogs,me too dogs with good handlers win hunts.i guess we kinda got off track. what i want when ukc takes my money is the option to hunt in any ukc hunt..lets make it easy for the clubs to make a little money. with out the clubs its pretty much over.i would probably have to drive 2 hrs to get to any ukc cur hunt.

Pete, there is getting to be a large number of silent, hot nosed hounds being put in the hunts that don't have a nose as good as most Curs.

redtick well thats kind of my point . ive seen curs more hound than a hound and hounds more cur than a cur.. nite hunt rules tend to promote a titer mouth dog then they used to...weve got better tree dogs because of it . some of these dogs are getting to tree way ahead of the coon.. i think weve gone a little strong towards tree dogs .lost a little on track dogs. im not knocking nite hunt rules either cause i think in lots of ways quality of dogs has improved because of nite hunts and not many breeds have improved with competition hunts. it is prety amazing how a change in a rule can affect so many dogs in just a few years..
