Re: Definition of a Reproducer?

I guess the first question would be what do you strive to reproduce. Some would say that old so and so is a reproducer because his or her pups have the same characteristics as them. Question is are these characteristics what you want in your dogs. If you’re only looking for lots of tree in a dog it should be easy because lots of dogs today will tree up anything. If you’re looking to put some tracking in your dogs that too should be easy because there are lots of dogs that will run all night and never look up a tree. But if you’re looking for a balanced dog with brains that can handle a track, stay treed, have game in the tree and do it with a loud hound mouth then that’s something a little harder to achieve. Not many dogs male or female ever reproduced smart balanced track and tree dogs with big loud hound mouths but the ones that did and do I would call a reproducer, at least of the type of hound I like. It’s all in what you like and what you consider a coondog. The two most over used words in the coonhound world are coondog and reproducer. JMO
You just defined the difference between a "reproducer"...and breeding stock...they are not necessarily always the same.
Some dogs reproduce on a specific trait....and they can be useful in a breeding program at some level, but maybe should not be widely used....
There are very few prepotent reproducers in the world that re-create their own image in the well rounded fashion that you speak of....and that's not to mention the training aspect.
A pup can be born with all the right tools, and if it's not trained correctly, and hunted the right way.....it's not always the parents fault!
