Justmy opinion

My opinion as to what is a reproducer is a dog that can reproduce a dog better than him with similiar traits a vast majority of the time.

For instance an outstanding track dog is bred to an outstanding tree dog. The powers that be grace the pups with the best of both parents, and the pups are outstanding track and tree dogs. This cross produced, however did it REPRODUCE? Yes. Did the track dog REPRODUCE tree dogs? No, it produced them and the tree dog REPRODUCED them. Did the tree dog REPRODUCE track dogs? No, it produced them and the track dog REPRODUCED them.

No other word in coonhunting is misused as much as that one.

Man I could be wrong but from what ive seen 2 halfs dont make a whole. You can breed a track dog to a tree dog and in my opnion your not gonna get the best of both worlds the domnite gene of the 2 is gonna over power the other. If it worked like your decribeing than it would be 2 easy. That is why line breeding works so well. I havent been in this along time but this is just an opnion and we all know what they say about those.

PS> I could be wrong but am always willing to learn

Definition of a Reproducer?

I guess the first question would be what do you strive to reproduce. Some would say that old so and so is a reproducer because his or her pups have the same characteristics as them. Question is are these characteristics what you want in your dogs. If you’re only looking for lots of tree in a dog it should be easy because lots of dogs today will tree up anything. If you’re looking to put some tracking in your dogs that too should be easy because there are lots of dogs that will run all night and never look up a tree. But if you’re looking for a balanced dog with brains that can handle a track, stay treed, have game in the tree and do it with a loud hound mouth then that’s something a little harder to achieve. Not many dogs male or female ever reproduced smart balanced track and tree dogs with big loud hound mouths but the ones that did and do I would call a reproducer, at least of the type of hound I like. It’s all in what you like and what you consider a coondog. The two most over used words in the coonhound world are coondog and reproducer. JMO

You just defined the difference between a "reproducer"...and breeding stock...they are not necessarily always the same.

Some dogs reproduce on a specific trait....and they can be useful in a breeding program at some level, but maybe should not be widely used....

There are very few prepotent reproducers in the world that re-create their own image in the well rounded fashion that you speak of....and that's not to mention the training aspect.

A pup can be born with all the right tools, and if it's not trained correctly, and hunted the right way.....it's not always the parents fault!

Do these freakishly good coondogs reproduce well from people's experience? For me its hard to look at dog's that i havent hunted with and call them a freak or not based on how much they win. Do they "reproduce" themselves? Or do they "produce" more similar to what their parents "reproduced."

Russell, I've seen some that reproduced their likeness but the problem lies with the hunters not hunting hard enough to see it.

Most hunters are content with a dog that just trails around and gets treed with a coon somtimes. those freaks( top hounds) takes more hunting to develope.

Kenny, an average dog doesn't do anything for me other than make me want a better one.

I would like to thank everyone that has replied thus far. I apoligize for not replying in the last few days, but the Air Force had me on the road to Columbus Ohio to the "Gathering of Mustangs and Legends". It was amazing.....I will be leaving again on Thursday to take the F-22 Raptor to Florida for a couple of days and then over to Texas next week and finally down to New Orleans around Halloween.

Thanks again and I will reply when I can. I have enjoyed reading all the different perspectives on this topic.

Kenny, when I breed Battle to Ruth, I would like to give you a pup. They will go back to Racie three times....

Tim

Nite Ch, PKC Texas State Ch , PKC National Ch, PKC Gold Ch Mike’s Gift was out of Sivler Dollar Cracker. He was the only dog that would run and tree out of his litter. Must of took all the ability from his littermates….lol

He was breed privately and every pup out of him were pretty nice, a little rough but could tree a coon with authority. Most of them have died for one reason or another.

He was only bred to two females that I know of. Every male the females were bred to produced nothing.

When the females were bred to Mike, all the pups would run and tree.

Only one that I know of.
