If anyone wants to look up a study, one way to find it is to go to google and type in something like"raccoon thesis", because all graduate theses are now archived somewhere.

on raccoons published by the Smithsonian Institution, written by a Dr. Sam Zeveloff. I have emailed back and forth to him on occasion, and he was very interested in hearing what hunters have to say on the subject. He is working on another book on raccoons. I'm sure he would love to hear from you. He could be very helpful at critiquing your work and helping to you to focus on the variables that seem most promising.

Great read! I was wondering if you noted wind conditions? Years ago we didn't hunt really windy nights for fear of losing dogs, but now with garmins we do. It seems like we tree alot more coon on those nights. I don't know if they are moving more or dogs are able to wind more tracks.

I turned out last night (Full moon)at a feeder I had a camera on checked camera and 3 coons had feed from 7:30 till 9:15 (when I showed up with dogs First time I had coons on camera before 12 a.m. and have had camera up for about 2 months. Very Random creatures!!

For those interested you can search for raccoon studies. First go to goggle and type in goggle scholar.

Then you can type in raccoon studies, raccoon movement studies, or what ever you want to see.

Raccoon studies yields 32,500 hits.

Raccoon movement studies yields 25,400 hits.

Things to pay attention to with regard to studies are the methods. Nine times out of ten, I would have done something differently in the methods, but that is the nature of studies. It is always better to have many studies come to the sane conclusion than 1 study coming to a conclusion from left field.

Word of warning though, sometimes the reading can be a little boring.

I'd like to see a study on wind direction to see if it made any difference in coon movement...you know, like talking about fishing when the wind is from the west you catch the best and the east you catch the least.

I had 4 coon that stayed around my house for 2 yrs and I got to study their habits. I watched these coon feed early, lots of times at 3pm tip dark and then stir around tip dark and then go up a big popular tree and lay up till 2 to 3 am before coming back down and feeding and disappearing unto the next night. Very few nights that they didn't keep this schedule. I also could hear the fighting on the hill sides and around peoples houses. They also loved to lay up in trees that had cudzoo in them. I watched the kittens get lost from their mom and chatter and make little chirpping noises while they tracked their mom and when they caught up they would make little purring sounds. They were also smart and never crossed the road instead using a long covert probably 150 ft long. I could hear them chattering while coming through. When my neighbor cut the top and trimmed the big popular tree they disappeared. Goes to show they have their favorate trees to hang out in.
