Yeah Danny I was just letting people know that there are boxes that are available out there are very nice and they don't need to let dogs sleep on the ground! I know I won't let that happen. The day I can't afford a nice box is the day I don't deserve dogs. Need to be able to do dogs right. Rid fleas,ticks etc. Just take good care of them.

I tried this before but here it is again. We live not far from you Danny, and here are two houses sitting next to each other. A commercial (very heavy one) igloo with a flap made of a treadmill belt and special inside to hold lots of bedding.

I stuck a barrel out next to it in February of this year to see what would happen.......I guess my dog is just dumb cause he sleep in that black barrel from the heat of summer to the freezing of winter with that other house right next to him. I do move it to the shade in the summer however. I can't keep him out of it unless I take it away and he is healthy as a horse.

He looks dry with plenty of bedding, nothing wrong with that at all. Some guys seem to forget about the dry part and the bedding too, lol. wd

Ron, I think your hound is choosing that barrel cuz it looks cool! haha Yup, thick, dry bedding will keep a dog nice and toasty too. He looks all hunkered down in there!

Here is my kennel, five bay's all under roof and a 10X20 sleeping area and feed room,5X10 run's on each bay for dog to run on that is concrete, 3,Bay's in back for brood females with same size run's
with door"s inside to each dogs sleeping area. and you can see the big 5ftX5ft fan that blow air threw the kennel in the summer.This kennel is all under one roof, cost me $5000.00
But well worth it the dogs is much healther and happyer.

How about those wire crates strapped to the back bumper of the fancy motorhomes ? seen several at Oaks , never quite understood that arrangement , good post Danny ! Are we still on for Thursday August 9th for picking up 3 DuraBox Houses and visit ?? Paul from Canada

the smaller dog house is wormer ,,they hold bodey heat better,but all of mine are built rite out of concreat in my kennel,

Just as a side note, I do agree with what Danny is saying. I have seen some hounds kept in just awful conditions and it makes me sick. Lots of times it isn't the house so much, but the filfth around the house. It is no wonder people are always asking about wormer on here.

That dog in the barrel is about the most hardy dog I have ever seen. He is just not sensitive to anything be it weather, wounds, or punishment. I have an older dog who does need a different kind of house as she is not as strong a build and the cold really gets to her. She does not so as well in just a barrel. In the winter we put a box over the barrel to give her and extra wind barrier and make sure no weather gets within a foot of her.

All in all, I would love to have some of those really nice houses, but it is just not in the works right now. Between the money and moving them from place to place it is just not practical. Folks need to remember that a healthy dog is a cheap dog to keep and most of this comes from good shelter, good food, and fresh water. Give them that and they seem pretty happy.

In my line of work I see and have to go get dogs out of there dog houses in the middle of winter that have froze to death and all they have in there house is a blanket and the stupid owners just don't get it. Nothing makes me madder than seeing a dog that has froze to death because the owners are so senceless of there pets health.
I have used the Mullins insulated dog houses for years and like Danny did I put a thermomitor in mine when it got down to 20 degrees below zero and with the door on it the temp was in the 60's

I don't think everyone should go out and buy new dog houses! Really not what this is about. Of course not. Just providing a place where a hound can go into to get out of the weather and stay dry and warm and keep comfty, doesn't have to be a mansion, just a nice place to bed down in with some type of bedding. Heck, I used wooden boxes for years and they still work great. Always a place for hound to go and sleep and like most wooden houses eventually you have to replace them. Its more on the ones that I have seen that have no where to get in and sleep without having to put up with the elements, Rain,snow ect. Just a nice dry place to sleep makes them happy. hey danny.....why not put a web address or something on one of the classified sections so folks can get and idea of price on your dog houses and then some other folks that have different styles of insulated houses do the same. that would be a good resource for everyone to look at and get an idea of what is available out there. thanks.

i build my own they all have wind walls in them and all i 5 inches of insulation in the walls but when it gets hot up here like it is right now all of them sleep on the roofs of the dogs house anyway all i do is add a door in the winter and they do great

This is one of those issues that really bothers me. First off, let me say up front I believe in taking care of my dogs, but they are dogs. They are not people, and they don't have the same needs. I hate it when vets get on the local news stations and tell everyone to bring their dogs in the house.

A good dog house needs to be draft free with dry bedding that is it. It doesn't need to be insulated. I have went out and checked my dogs at 3 or 4 in the morning when it was 40 below in a plain ole wood dog house. They were as warm as toast.

I say go ahead an spend all that money on a fancy dog house that satisfies your human needs. Then place a plain barrel next to it. Nine times out of ten the dog will pick the barrel.

I will use my money I save on their dog houses on a better premium dog food.

Danny mu uncle even has a big tree he cut many years ago and cut a hole in it for the dog to stay in. Been there several years and works great. Natural insulation there.

I do have a question. If that insulated dog house keeps them warm in the winter. How does it keep them cool in the summer. I understand the experiment on the drive way but did that house have a dog in it? The way I understand it the dogs body heat warms the box in the winter but what cools it in the summer? A dogs body temp is around a 101. If you put that in a insulated box in the summer then you just stuck a heater in there. Other than that great post.

joey, i can't answer your question. i'm just not talented when it comes to science. heck i'm not even sure i can spell it. lol.
i just know that the insulated igloos do keep them cool in the summer heat. i thought the same as you about the dog heating up the house. but my dogs would spend all day in their house when it was 80 and 90 degrees. so being who i am i crawled in to see if they were getting overheated and almost stayed in there with them. lol. it sure was a lot cooler in there than out in the yard. we have a big english dog, jack, and in the summer you don't often see him out and about. he's in that iglooo. i guess all he needs is a big dish of lemonade. lol.
in the winter tho, i have kennels built in my barn. where i live that west wind just comes howling up the hill and it isn't just the cold the dogs have to fight but that windchill as well. the barn keeps the dogs out of the wind. and even on days when it gets below 0 that barn doesn't go down past 20. so with a box full of straw my dogs stay toasty.
as to the critics who say we are projecting humanity onto our dogs, oh well. guess you would really want to commit me then. i have a big female that i keep in the house with me. i talk to her all the time and even tell her where i am going when i leave and when i'll be back. she is the mistress of the house. don't know what i will do when she passes on. she's going to be 6 this sept.
i have had dogs all my life but we always kept them in the house. the coonhounds are the first dogs i ever kept outside so i like to keep them as comfortable as possible.

We're guilty of spoiling our dogs,lol. We use the barrels just like that one black one but they're blue, and we put bedding in them, the dogs love them. We have concrete floors with sand on them. Three of our dogs sleep in the house (Wy,Looser&Ruby). Looser and Wy know precisely what a McDonalds is. The other day on the way to a show/hunt we stopped to get something to eat and my dad wouldnt listen that Wy liked a Double Cheeseburger Ketchup only and well he didn't get know ketchup on it. Wy looked at him like he was crazy! The three of them are also house broke, and get atleast 2 hotdogs a day. But back to the topic of the post. I agree it don't have to be nothing fancy just something to keep them out of the weather.

i agree, our hounds have the plastic house! not the igloos. the have pen that they stay...most of them. they are cleaned twice daily beding changed once or twice a week during the winter. in the summer that want sleep in the houses. and if you put shavings in them they pull them out. they only do this in the summer. our hounds are well taken care of. i can't stand to see animals that aren't it drive me insane!!!

Danny , I;M thinking when the sun is beating down on the box that the insulation is deflecting the heat off , so that inside is still a hell of a lot cooler than being out in it or an uninsulated box soaking up the heat . Insulation is the way to go ! Same as the Eskimo's igloo of snow , it insulates from the elements , see you Wed. to pick up the load , Paul .
