I agree with you about the man Tim. It certainly works both ways. Anyone put our dogs in the truck, I would shake his hand and want some of that in my pens!

I just haven't seen it happen here. Somewhere else under different running conditions it may happen a lot, make me look awful, I don't know.

Some individuals can and do run with the grades, make a real good showing, Some of their blood in our dogs but packs of them outdoing the grades.

Never seen even one all AKC pack do it.

Must be a special breed unseen here as all the popular AKC ones read about on these boards have been here in one dog or another.

If you're seeing lots of packs of them and itsa the norm, maybe your fast footed standard is a little slower than you think.

Alabama John, I guess if I tear up the papers maybe it'll speed up some of my dogs?

As far as my fastfooted standard being slow, couple seasons ago my pack caught more rabbits than I shot. Maybe I'm just a bad shot, won't argue that, but if the dogs get any faster than that, the rabbit will have to start chasing them.LOL

I wish we were a bit closer to each other, I bet if we put our dogs down together we'd see papers or not they'd run the rabbits to our liking.

I don't want to hijack FullCry's thread so I'll end on this for now. Maybe someday we'll get a chance to run together.

I bet you are right. Your dogs running down rabbits is sure a good sign.
Folks that come run here from Tennessee or Kentucky always say their own dogs don't run like this back home.
My point was in reference to Fulcrys post and I still believe that with a pen of 20 AKC trial dogs and another of mixed or grade dogs that are simply hunted here. I would take the grades hunting as my first preference.

I am invited to attend a big get together of AKC UBGF and Southern couple dogs owners this next Saturday.
100 lbs of catfish fillets and no telling how much chicken.
There will be some dog running.
I will enjoy the fellowship and watching their dogs run. Great folks and great dogs. Last year made over $6000.00 for that format.

They would shoot any dog that ran like mine.

If you have been running cottontails and want to see your dogs sho nuff run heads up and wide open, come down this winter when its too cold up there.
We will like your dogs even if they have papers!lol

Id say you wouldnt be the first to cross Coon Dogs with Beagles. But my hats off to anyone that can take a line of hounds and breed cross them to suit a specific purpose.

They use beagle crossess on Mt. Curs alot for squirril hunting.

Don't worry about hijacking this thread for i'm having fun reading it. If i make this cross it is a running walker foxhound and a beagle. The would be dam is 21 to 22 inches tall and about thirty to maybe 35 lbs. The sire would be a male 15 inch beagle. I'm learning alot from this thread so continue on. Hey Bama John, we sure would enjoy hunting with y'all and i'm going to keep your number. I have hunted up that way some but between Alex city and Childersburg but it's been four or five years. Sorta like sitting on the front porch of the old store and eating a moon pie and drinking a RC isn't it.

Come on up a little farther to between Childersburg and Harpersville.
We run some with about 1/4 fiest and some with a little basset or running hound too. Nothing over 15-16 inches.
Most folks would think they are full AKC beagle. I bet they would pass a breed inspection for registration.

There are a lot more AKC and other registered beagles that look more like mine than they do the old timer "Alibi Billy" whose picture was in this months Rabbit Hunter! How long since you have seen a real flag tail on a beagle like his? That's old time!
That flag used to be part of the AKC description of a Beagle. Don't know if it still is.

For Tim, we have one or two that are actually AKC too.lol

I like the Hybred Vigor!

One thing you might try is stunting the pups a little to keep them down in height.

I still like a dog with long legs that can still be running and plunging ahead in water while 'Ol Shorty is trying to keep up swimming.

Our dogs don't have to be first, but sure don't want them to be last.

I have always admired and respected UKC when we had tree and bay hounds for their outlook of the members on hound mixing like the Coon, Squirrel, Bear, Hog, and Cat hounds. Hope they never close the registry, point their nose in the air and change.

hey john most of mine sport them flags at least in the off season. ive had a few tell me they didnt like the flag tails.

That is not it. Good looking dog though. Good hair, made for the thick brush and briars.

Some flags have longer hair in the underside of the tail the whole length with more close to the end. Some old timers had tails that had even longer hair down from the tip about 6-8 inches all the way around. Looked like a flag waving when they smelled a rabbit.

Is it still in the AKC Beagle standard?

a couple of ours Do have a brush or broom tail as John describes. Real long full tails with a heavy brush.
most of the Showdog pics you see as the one in the standard shown have been groomed so the tail is rounded out and trimmed up with any Long Scragly hair trimmed off..

AS FAR AS THE TOP POST IF YOU CHECK ALOT OF THE 15 INCH DOGS IN UKC COMPETITION TODAY YOU WILL FIND ALOT OF SMALL FOX-WALKER INFLUENCE. BUT THEN AGAIN SOME PEOPLE WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN EVEN IF IT MEANS REGISTERING NONE PUREBRED AS PUREBRED. TO CURE THIS WOULD BE TO CLOSE THE REGISTERY. Can't criticize a man for being honest!

Interestingly there are a lot of underground coal mines here with slag roads running over the mines all through the serica fields going to hundreds of big slag circles with a gas pump in the middle of each.

Lots of beaglers here run 15-16 inch fast dogs, like you say, some mixed a little, and do bet with a pool on the crossings.
Some bet on their own dogs, and some bet on whatever they think will win.

Come on down and take their money. You'd have a good time, eat well and meet some nice folks.
