I hunt ALOT by myself just seems like everyone is lazy anymore. Although tonight I did have a few co partners for the first two turn outs then after that they went home so I was on my own again but my 1 year old did manage to get another one up a tree so I called it quits.

i prefer

to hunt alone. as stated above, you really learn what a dog has when you hunt him alone. and there are no interuptions.

I hunt alone 90% of the time. I work second shift and cant turn loose thru the week until about 1:30am. Not many people want to go hunting at this time. Sometimes on my night off a good friend hunts with me. Usually hunt one dog unless I'm starting a pup. Then I'll hunt him with the old dog some. When I see they can do it on their own I pour the hunting on them by themselves! Just seems to work best for me.

I hunt alone most of the time. I turn loose at crazy hours, while most coonhunters have gone to bed.

I like to hunt one, or two dogs....depending on the dog. I really don't think hunting a dog alone builds independence; that's bred into them. I have a couple of young dogs here that are split treeing, and have since they first started.

What hunting a dog alone does develop is CONFIDENCE....and there is a difference in being independent and being confident.
I like a dog with confidence. I want it to strike with confidence, and locate with confidence, and tree with confidence; And, if it messes up I want it to do it with authority!!!!! LOL!

Craig I do believe too that hunting a dog alone does help in the confidence area alot too! But I just think hunting a dog by himself alot makes him more independant. But also it's a breeding game too. Little of both!

I hunt by myself the biggest part of the time, partly because I like to, but also because I don't have anybody very close to me to hunt with.

Most of the time it is just me and one or two hounds.

I like to hunt with Roger Lathrop when I can, and Brian Bebber and I try to get out once a week or so.

But the most of the time it is just me.

Craig,

This is one of the best posts I have seen in a while.

You have nailed it down, and said a mouthful in a very concise and succinct way.

I agree with you 100%.

well in my opinion its just way too

dangerous and not really any funnn... if ya want to hunt your dog alone , take a friend cut yours loose one drop and his or hers the next...jmo... hunting one dog all alone doesnt make him any better but it does make him competitive when ya cut a dog loose with him thats his equal.... u can c the difference when ya go to the hunts on the weekend,,,,,,,dogs are like us they like a challenge......and in my situations ive always liked the comfort of having someone in hollering distance if i take a stumble or dive and ive taken a few in my time..... its like craig said independence is bred in em not hunted in em....

I usually try to find somebody to go with, but it's about 50/50. I always single a young dog out and hunt it by itself though. I personally like to turn a young dog by itself with another dog in the truck. If you get a young dog to go with one in the truck then it's going to be a good hunter and you don't find that much in hounds anymore!!

i hunt alone about 99% of the time, mainly because no one likes to hunt the areas i hunt, plus i have a tendacy to loose track of time in the woods, i'll leave out as the sun goes down and get back as the sun starts to rise a lot of times. as far as the number of dogs i take, if i have six dogs i'm feeding, then six dogs are going to the woods.

when....

I ACTUALLY can get my fat, lazy, sorry butt into the woods to hunt...yes, mostly alone, unless I can drag one of the local kids along with me to go retrieve the dogs for me!

Well I hunt alone 90% of the time. But learned a good lesson last year. I fell into a ravine and broke my leg. I was lucky it was the 10%. My hunting buddy hike out and called for help. I still hunt alone 90% of the time but with a cell phone.
