Lack of knowledge or pure stupidity on training/hunting would be the first thing I see with this problem. Some dogs will be naturally straight and pretty accurate some just need some fine tuning and training and there are a few that will never make anything so do your part and then see what happens. Most people jump on the the dog and his bloodline when I would say 80-90 percent of the time its the training or lack of.

I hunted one for about 3 months and he was the most accurate hound I have ever hunted with and he was 10 months old when I started hunting him. He was natural or trained right by the person who owned him before I got him.

How do you train a dog to be able to work out a track and move it on????? How do you train a dog to work a track the right way instead of backwards ?? How do you train a dog to have the sense to know not to fool with a track that's too old and cold to do anything with???? How do you train a dog to have the coon when they tree??? I've not once seen a dog that USED TO be a slick treeing dog that now is not. And I've not once seen a accurate coondog that now trees all over the woods like an idiot.

I dont doubt she is.You did nothing to help her stop running fox and treeing possums?Youve told the truth but how do you know you cant make one more accurate? How do you know these people didnt cause the slick treeing to begin with. Some dogs are naturals. Some have to be trained on whats right and not right!!!!!! As for the mean thing.I agree with you. I'd bought bet good money I can make ANY PUP any breed thats tree minded a slick treeing idiot if I wanted to.Sometimes you need to know what NOT to do.

I wondered this stuff many times. Tell me this, who trained my dog to be accurate? Who trained her not to be mean? Yes, I did have to shock her a couple times on fox. That was years ago. I also scolded her and switched her a few times on possoms. I just believe that not running fox is a choice. I believe that treeing possoms or not treeing possoms is a choice made by the dog. Having something in there tree is not a choice, it's an ability and skill. They either can, or they can't. Can a person change there blood type or there DNA???? No. Just the same, a dog that is uncapable of locating the correct tree consistently is simply unable to do it. It's not in em. If you disagree with me on this point then what your saying is that a dog would rather stand on a tree and bark 150 times a minute like a dog possessed on a tree that they know full well has no coon in it, than go on through the woods and find the coon that they know is out there somewhere either on the ground or in another tree.

Like I said any breed hound pup thats tree minded.I can make it a slick treeing fool if I wanted to.Well maybe not all them but 98 out of 100.Nobody trained yours to be accurate and nobody trained her to not be mean.YOU broke her off fox and possums. It is a choice but if you had not intervened. She would still be the trashy dog she once was.Same way a young dog can be broke off finishing a track to soon and just pulling up treed! Sheep even your dog. When she was younger I asuume could not finish all her tracks.I'm talking about before you got her. People get excited when that young dog trees. They go to petting and talking it up on the tree. They do this on every tree where it has a coon or not.Pretty soon that dog figures out.If they tree they will get all that attention and make a habit out of treeing just for the heck of it.Same as princess on fox and possum. She got away with it untill you showed her different.I'm not saying you can make em all better but you can alot of them.

You make some good points Ga. Dawg. Can't say I totally agree though. Ok, so, your saying that you can take 98% of pups at a young age and if you so desire you can make them into slick treeing fools. Ok, do you believe you can take a grown dog that is allready a slick treeing idiot and fix the dog??? I just don't go along with the whole "lieing" thing that some people say. I don't beleive its a choice. Would you get on the show "who wants to be a millionare" and "lie" ?????? LOL LOL

Sheep a young dog is different. They are hopefully not set in there habits.I dont think much can be done on an older dog as far as slick treeing. They have probably already been praised for SLICK TREEING time an time again and some grown or puppies just dont have enough sence to tree coons!!! I'm with you on that.

Kinda hard to make a slick treer out of a nice young dog who's naturally accurate. Kinda hard to get pups out of a slick treer who don't do likewise. Like always begets like, don't ever forget it.

Would the people that dont think that a young dog that misses could ever get accurate, tell us about the young dogs you have tried to get more accurate ? What did you try? How long did you try it? How many young dogs have you tried to make more accurate?

I believe that all dogs miss sometimes. I also beleive that dogs get more accurate as they get older, just naturally. I believe that if a dog is 2 years old or older and there still blowing the top out of absolutly nothing, they allways will. I had a dog that was around 18 or 20 months old. I whooped him, switched him, scolded him, hunted him with accurate dogs, led him in circles around the tree too. All I got was a sore neck and a sore shoulder, and very very frustrated. I gave the dog away to a buddy of mine that said he could fix him. He couldn't.

After you would switch and whip him, what did he do? Just tree up another slick tree? How long before he would do it again? How long did you try it? Is that the only dog you tried it on? What was he/she out of?

You could switch him and send him on and he'd pull up 100 yards futher treeing everybreath just like he was looking at the coon. Switch him again and same thing. He'd do that all night long if you wanted to. My friends have tried to fix lots and lots of dogs the same way. It never worked. I've never saw a slick treeing idiot that was fixed. never. If, and I said, If, I was a walker man here's some bloodlines I'd STAY AWAY FROM.

Maybe there are some good dogs out there that are bred like that but I haven't seen but one or two. The rest were mean as snakes or stupid or both.

I believe you were definitely right about that dog. I have never saw one like that. After the third or forth time I would have came into the tree with a vengence, and the animal still could not comprehend enough, to at least be tenetive about treeing the next time, I would assume the dog was mentally handicaped. You know I guess there are dogs born mentally handicaped just like there are people born that way.

I THINKS IT FUNNY HOW PEOPLE ALWAYS BLAME THE STUD FOR WORTHLESS PUPS IF THEY GET A BUNCH OF SLICK TREEING IDIOTS. RAT HAS BEEN BRED TO ALOT OF BITCHES SOME REALLY GOOD ONES AND SOME THAT PROBABLY COULDN'T TREE A COON IF THERE WERE ONLY ONE TREE IN THE FOREST.I KNEW A PERSON THAT TOOK A SLICK TREEING IDIOT DOWN AND BRED TO RAT NOW WHEN THESE PUPS COME OUT IDIOTS RAT GETS A BAD WRAP BUT NOTHING WILL BE SAID ABOUT THE BITCH WHO SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN BRED IN THE FIRST PLACE. AS A STUD OWNER YOU HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING WHAT KIND OF FEMALE YOUR BREEDING TO .I HAVE AS GOOD OF A FEMALE AS I HAVE EVER OWNED OUT OF HIM, SHE WILL COME AS CLOSE TO HAVING A COON EVERY TIME SHE TREES AS ANY DOG I HAVE EVER SEEN, SHE'S THE ONE I DEPEND ON WHEN IT'S ROUGH OUT AND I GET FED UP WITH THE YOUNG DOGS.YOU CAN BELIEVE ONE THING THERE ARE ALOT OF JEALOUS STUD OWNERS OUT THERE THAT WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ONE AS GOOD AS RAT, HE HAS DOMINATED THE SIRE OF THE YEAR FOR AS LONG AS HE'S BEEN AT STUD WITH PUP EARNINGS THAT WILL PROBABLY NEVER BE EQUALED.I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER SEEN A BLOODLINE THAT STARTS AS YOUNG AS HIS PUPS DO NO MATTER WHAT DIFFERENT BLOODLINE HE'S BRED TO. LOVE THEM RAT DOGS

Sheep if you would fully read my post it starts at a young age if you correct the problem early you can correct it for good on most. If the dog has been allowed to slick tree and was four years old then They should of done something else with him. Sheep some dogs take a different approach to correcting problems. SOme will learn by alittle correction and some take a lot of correction. I have a dog that was always straight and accurate but when he was about two we hunted with a slick treeing idiot one night and mine and a buddy of mines dog slicked with him all night. Well to make a long story short I corrected at every tree and finally on the last one I tied him to the empty and finally made a point. I thought I ruined him for a month after that he would just run track and not want to tree but after that month of hunting him totally by him self he became the one the most accurate dog I have hunted and and checks every tree before he trees. This is a true story and he became a very smart dog. Now I'm not saying all can be fixed Sheep it just depends on how long they let them go before they were corrected. Now I use a Shocker and it does wonders on slick trees. lol
