walkers are fine for comp hunting, but they are not worth a dang in a beaverpond or a cold track. i feel i have aright to say this because i currently have 2 walkers myself, i just boutght a 6 month old plott, that trees in front of those walkers on a regular basis. also she is not afraid of a beaver pond, and she doesn't slick tree like those walkers do.

It's a whole ot easier to blame the numbers than it is to admit the dog can't get the job done.
Heck , look how many walker dogs get be after being cheated , or driven off a tree by a mean dog , dry-holed by a guide, etc.
Everybody has an excuse.
There may be more winning walker dogs than the other breeds , but there's also more losing walker dogs too! LOL

Listen, I don't see the need in trying to offend someone personally for stating their opinions. I'm not demoting or promoting any breed. The only thing that I'm saying is that numbers do have SOME INFLUENCE. And, to shut some of you up about my "bias opinion", I think that walkers are awesome dogs. They start early and hunt hard. But, it just isn't fair to get on here and junk talk other people's breeds. In addition to my blue dogs, I also have 2 walkers and a redbone. If my username didn't have the word in it, you guys wouldn't even know what kind of dogs I hunt. I never put any breed on the pedestal in these posts, or anytime. I just think it takes some of the enjoyment out of the sport when you have people that trash other people and their dogs. That's not what it's about. I mean, the guy who started this thread said that he and his little boy were about to get back into coon hunting. Now, do you think he wants to bring his kid into a sport that's turning out to be nothing more than a pissin contest among owners and their breeds? Let's just let the dogs do the talking.

I am an avid Walker fan. They are my pick and what I own and hunt, and I can promise you they don't bog up in a swamp or anything else and can flat drift a bad cold track, and put the coon up a tree. However, if you are interested in a Black and Tan, I can tell you where you can find one that will put you and your son in the "winner's circle." I pleasure hunt with a man that hunts B&T's. He has the best B&T's I have ever hunted with--some of the best coondogs. This man does not hunt any competition hunts, but I guarantee you his dogs are better than the majority that do hunt comp. I know this because I have handled his hounds before to show him they could win. If interested in a B&T, I can point you in the right direction!! Trust me, he aint scared to show them either. I feel pretty confident he would let you hunt with at least 3, and will turn them loose any way you want to see them go.

I dont care what color it is I got a redbone a walker and a 6month old B&T out of Smokey III. the black dog is treeing coons already although he does his fair share of trash. He is a HARD TREEEE DAWG. I am very pleased.

If the Walker breed is as great as they are cracked up to be, then why do the vast majority of them disappear from the hunts when the leaves come off the tree's. Now I'm not downing the Walker breed by any means, I have owned them in the past, I own one now, and I'll probably own one in the future. Their biggest problem is also their biggest asset, they are bred to be TREE DOGS, and tree dogs make bad tree's. There is no malice toward the breed in this, just fact, and by the way, I'm breaking my Walker pup with my Black & Tan female.

I wonder if you took all the other 5 breeds wins together and compared them to just the walkers if they would even be close to matching? I really kinda doubt it.

I just love these threads on how great the walkers are. The arrogance of some walker hunters is something else. There are MANY great walkers out there, true. There are many great dogs of other breeds also. I LOVE when UKC publishes the number of dogs entered by breed and then give the percentages of winners, the walker breed often fall way behind.

The walker breed has done a better job of breeding for the score card. You can beat a great dog with a cull if you can't hear the great dog because the cull has such an overpowering mouth. Thats just one of MANY ways the walker breed has bred for the hunts.

A good dog is a good dog regardless of color and I have owned some of each breed. One of my best was a bluetick. Of the best COMPETION dogs I've hunted one was a B&T and the other was a walker. The best night after night COON hounds have been B&Ts, probably because they are my preffered breed and I've had more of them.

I like all breeds, it really dont matter much to me, a good dog is a good dog, but some of the other breeds seem more enjoyable than the Walkers around the house and in the kennel. After the walkers get a little age on them they calm down, but a lot of them are nuts when they are young. Bark, bark, bark, run in circles, try to attack the weed eater, set and bark at a cricket ect ect. What are some of the more sensible calm Walkers out there?

You ONLY HAVE TO BEAT THE TWO OR THREE dog's that you are drawn out against, with PLUS POINTS, before you can start comparing your score against the other 996 or 997 OTHER DOG'S IN THE HUNT, REGARDLESS OF THEIR BREED. So really what it amounts too, is to win your cast with the most PLUS POINTS, that you can get, & let the CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY.

If I'm wrong, someone explain to me where I ERRORED?????????

Why is it all the "SLICK" handlers I know of, use walkers to be "SLICK" with? If a WALKER does suck a 'jam up job' why the need to 'hire' "SLICK" handlers?

It must be a freak occurrence in your area, because I know of no walker handlers that need to rely on slick handling. I have seen plenty of shamefull acts preformed by the other breeds trying to compete against walkers but never any from the walker men themselves. It is sad what the other breeds will try and pull just so they can say they beat a walker.

alot of these hired handlers are SLICK handlers they are GOOD handlers, if you went to some hunts you might learn the difference. and wasnt it you that said women can do anythign men can do and better, well get out and handle your dog yourself.

im a blue dog man but i also have 2 walkers , i like the blue dogs and thats what i have faith in , to me ya got to have faith in what your hunting weather it walkers or b&ts .... i have faith in my blues and will continue to hunt them .... walkers are a very strong breed and doing very well in the hunts , they do get hooked up fast but thats just not my style of hunting ... but i can say this i have seen more coons with blues than i have walkers , but there is some reason walkers are in the winners circle ....

I haven't run anybody down....I said and I've gotten other PM's as well about this, that some of the ones chosen could have been better choices. period. As far as not going to WC, give me your bank book, and I'll be glad to go. I'm in Northern Ohio, going to Ga. was a bit of a haul. I have the calendar marked for events far away from home and this one just didn't fit. I could have told my daughter she can't go to North Carolina for Youth Nationals, which would have allowed me to go to Ga. If having to make a choice, what would you have done? I chose to take her in July instead. Maybe you're loaded, I'm not. That's the reason we didn't go to Ga. What was yours?
