i took him and 2 walkers to a show awile back not intending on showing them ,just to show them to sombody and got talked into showing them and jenny handled one of the walkers and i the other and she beat me with my other walker for class and breed and i came back and beat her with the black plott for best of show...i was sweating cause both dogs were good (i owned both, lol) but was handling the plott and hadn't put a dog on a bench for over a year,,when the judge said spin them ,the sweat started pouring ,lol. i knew it was tough choise then ,but jenny streached the walker too far and the plott stood like a statue,,
non of the dogs had ever been on a bench before that day, other than a dogbox..the walkerdog is on my webpage ,,hawk II is his name..

if i get my finances straghtened out ,you will be seeing some sparks this summer as iceman(black plott) and hawk II(walker) may be hitting the shows...

hawks rock (walker)may also be there too, that dog has a gait out of this world,,some fine tuning and you folks will pay me to stay at home,,lol

these are coondog bred dogs that can show with the best if the handler dont mess up,,lol,,i can feel the butterflys in my belly now,,lol

As you can see in the pic my young Plott is not all black. My old dog has a lot of black, she has what I would call brindle flecking thru out her legs as well as some white on the toes and chest. I do not have a good pic of the old dog. I also have seen one or two males out of her same breeding that are very black w/ brindle flecking on the legs. I have never seen an all black plott.
The original plotts varied a little by color although most were brindle at least one was buckskin. As most of you know, UKC does not recognize the buckskin plott. I read somewhere when you take the buckskin out of the gene pool you lose some of the brindle and start seeing more of the almost all black plotts.
I think everyone needs to quit worrying about what a dog looks like on a bench and see what they can do in the woods.
I'd hunt a polka dotted purple dog if it suited me in the woods. A dog that is over 2 years of age that can't tree a coon shouldn't be in a show. I'd like to take the top 20 UKC bench show dogs to the woods, I think we'd all be a little disappointed in the performance.

We aren't talking woods here so lets talk bench...

I saw a plott at Autumn Oaks that stood as tall as a great dane. Someone told me it was an AKC show champion, not sure if that is true or not. It was a pretty dog, but very dark, looked black from farther off until you got real close.
I think one of the problems is the standards for the different registires are NOT the same. If you watch all the AKC shows on TV you hardly ever see a hound, when you do it is almost always a black plott or a tri-colored saddleback walker with light colored face that looks like a long-legged beagle.

I don't think black plotts should be allowed to show. I also don't think that chicken breasted dogs should win, or dogs that have shaved bodies to try and show more muscle, or painted dogs that are darkened to look better, or males that look so much like females you have to check the plumbing to tell what they are... but they do.
What about these dogs that are so narrow in the front and thin in the chest that they would drop in 20 min. of hard hunting? I thought they were supposed to be broad chested with deep ribcages for better lung capacity... but what do I know?

Point is, all of these things are wrong (according to me, LOL) but happen all the time, every day, especially at the larger dog shows. That's just part of it I guess. Someone else said if you can't beat them join them... well we just did! We like old style redbones with heavy frame, deep chest, stocky build... but that isn't what is winning on the bench. So we went out and bought a young girl with long legs, narrow chest, shallow ribcage, ears she trips over, slender head with large forehead, and feet that look like she walks on tip-toe. Not my style personally, but if you're going to bench show then you might as well win. We'll see what happens.

Well I must be different. I am not going to join them. I have all brindle dogs (look at the New Philly pics.) I feel they all must meet the breed standard not personal preference. A Plott should not have a brown haze, it should be tiger stripped. Of course this is just my opinion and I know every one has there own.

The dog that was at that show had nothing but black, unless a person got a magnifying glass....and that you should not have to do.

i feel as long as it meets the breed standerds let it be shown there are far bigger problems with show dogs than there color

i feel the dogs should have to hunt and be able to tree a coon before they can be put on a bench but this is jmo

For the umteenth time, this has nothing to do with hunting. This is about breed standards on the bench. Standards are Standards, they are put in place for a reason. Would it be ok if a Walker was purple/pink/ green instead of black/white/brown? Or even a bluetick that was 16 hands high like a Quarter Horse? Either way you look at it, black is not Standard for a Plott.

if you can see any brindle no matter if it is hard to see than it meets the standards i personally do not care what a dog looks like as long as it hunts
give me that flat footed sway backed bow legged one nut coonhound and lets see how prettyhe does look on the hard wood

Don't worry about it, some people haven't heard the old adage "live and let live." I love how the hunt people put down showing and show dogs.... My grandmother always told me that people only fight what they are afraid of. I've seen many a good show dog that could blow away the competition in the woods as well!

IMO, a dog should be able to do both. I don't want an awesome hunter that is so ugly I have to put a bag over it's head. Also don't want a GRCH that can't tree a coon that's 5 ft. in front of it.

I think that a true coonhound should know how to get it done in the woods and look good doing it! That said, not every dog makes it as a hunter. But heck, if they look good why not show them? No sense in letting a pretty dog sit in a pen for it's entire life if it can be doing SOMETHING. It will be well loved at a show home. Or, if it's dog ugly (sorry for the pun) but is a good hunter, so be it. Find a hunting home for the dog, just don't bring it here! We try to only have dogs that are dual purpose, got a few we've been disappointed in that won't do one or the other, but that is the chance you take with any animal.

You don't see many show people sitting around bashing hunters. It amazes me that these serious hunters have so much free time to sit at the computer and bash the showers. Shouldn't they be out hunting?

FYI: I dont discreminate against black brindle plotts. At this time I am interested in breeding my male to a brown brindle female. However I also have3 black brindle plotts, 1 male and 2 females.

like that pup ,bootlegger
if that is what you get from your male and the dark females ,,that is showing the old blood coming back to the top..
as the saying "cream floating to the top"

the color of the pup used to be the norm around here..
i'm thinking that people line breeding on the old blanketbacks like that pup may be the reason for the dogs getting so black..
i like that color ,i think the dark dogs should be bred to the lighter ones to keep the med coloration ,like breeding tall dogs to short ones to keep the size normal...

is there any breeders that try to keep the saddle/blanket in there plotts today or are they just getting a throwback ever so often..

...

They are stopping it. It is a disqualification. My dad had a whole litter turned down for regestery at 6 months. Lots of Plotts brindle wont show up till a year or so, which the pups did. Also the breed represenative that checked that litter showed an all black plott in the show that day LOL Its a bunch of crap. Black is a dominant color and if you breed two dark plots they well be real black. Who cares as long as the papers are right and you know they are out of strong Plott Blood. These pups went back to the most well known Plotts of all time. size, muzle, ears, etc. is what should matter.

Anyone seen the Jan issue of the AKC Gazette? Plott on the cover and feature article, since they are now eligible for the Hound Group.
Last page of the article is the breed standard. I had never read it before and was a little surprised to see that solid black is accepted. Buckskin is too. Nice-colored blanketback plott in the picture with the standard.
Anyone know if there will be any plotts at Westminster?
