Around 1980, a good friend of mine Emet Brohard had been dragging me along for about 2months letting me spectate and finally told me the only way I was really going to learn was to "get in amonst em". He let me handle his Gr. Nite Ch called I-79 Bow in my first UKC hunt. I drew Russ Bellar hunting KY River Buck, Nathan Hammonds hunting Lookout Luke and Charlie Shortride hunting Shortridge's Queen. Emet knew I didn't stand a chance and just laughed when my cast was drawn. Yes I did get an education that night.

Early 80's or late 70's, Georgia State Hall of Fame, when it was still in Thomaston, i believe. Drew Vernon Holt, who was a paid handler, and a holy terror back then. First drop, my dog struck, and Vernon yelled out "strike my dog!". I was confused the rest of the night!!!!!!!!!!!! I still love to draw Vernon at a hunt, and we still laugh about that night.

well

well guys my first hunt was with a ENGLISH female. she was nite championed like 3 weeks before the alabama yotuh hunt when they still had them in fort. payne al. that was a while ago. i was 12 i think. i hunted with Trey Perrin and his Anna female. she was awsome!!!! he beat me earlier that day in the show and i thought i couldn't lose to a 10 year old again but boy was i wrong. i was inexpernce compaired to Trey. The next year (lol) me and trey had a thing for each other ovously or we wouldn't of had to hunt together both of my 13 and under years, but miss Anna had passed on by the next year and then we hunted with jack. Trey is alot of fun to hunt with and a great person him and his daddy both(Jamie) they broke me in right. them and Avise Allen to all ya'll who now either or both of them. we had a great hunt even thought he beat me but it was awsome. even thought i'm not huntin this year at our youth hunt i will owe him one more good run before i can't hunt youth again. Hey he can't beat me on the bench now.(lol)

I was 21 and my brother talked me into going one fall night with a dog called "chief". I said no way I had better things to do than run around in the woods all night. He kept on me, even offer the better dog to use. He said you take old chief and I'll take the other one. Don't remember that dogs name but I do remember it was a plott. Well we drive for several hours and get to the farm house where everyone meets up then we were divide up to hunt and dang if they don't put both of us in different casts. I didn't know crap about hunting a coon dog. I remember my brother say to me just callout strike my dog or something like that when I hear old chief. The they load us onto the back of the truck with three guys in the cab and three in the back with the dogs. Yep I was one of them in the back, about that time it started to rain and I though what the blankity blank am I doing here. Then we drive about two hours some place and let us out and away them dogs go. We'll I did like my brother told me when I heard old chief I yelled out strike my dog or whatever I was to say. About the third tree I looked over the bluff and dang if I aint about 100 yards from sin city in East Dubuque bright lights and all and about 2 hours from where we left the farm house. We finished the hunt and got back to the house to see how everyone had done. When we arrived back my brother asked how I did, I said Hell I don't know, how'd you do. He said it was to nasty they just stayed at the house and drank. But I got the last laugh I won second place and that's the last night I ever hunted. But I have to admitt it was fun!! You'll never guess who my brother was!!

It was a PKC hunt, I was probably 17 and at the end of the hunt the guy said congrats, I said for what? He said you won, and I thought to myself now that was an honest man because I had no idea that I had won...

Mid 80's,southern WI,decided to try my hand in the nite hunts.
Drew out with a guy named Ron Wentland who was hunting a pretty decent little blue female named J- Bell. His dog split treed from my dog twice. His dog had the coon both times.Mine didn't.The other dog in the cast went sailing around the country on something it couldn't catch, and never even made a tree.It was a 3 dog cast and I lost.I had fun though, and later on that fall I hide hunted some with Ron and J-Bell.Decent guy and decent dog.He eventually sold her to his buddy Warren.

1986,Greencastle Indiana.Jim Simpson was master of hounds.Had a big yodeling walker named "Ben" out of Tenn. Lead 2.I went in plum green and I still remember hunting with Pete Cummins and Joe Whitiker and Jim Brickert.I still occasionally hunt with all three to this day.I lost the cast of course but it lit a fire.I learned that first night what it was going to take to win and also realized I didnt have it.Two years after that I was packing the right kind and have won my share from then on.Wow,Iwas 21.Cant believe im now 41.Where did time go? The year was 1950

Do not know if it was UKC hunt or not. I was 9 years old. The Twin Lakes Coon Club in Florence, SC( no longer exists) had a hunt and turn out was much more than they expected. The old men of the club came and got me to guide that night. I did not hunt, but can still remember the excitement that I felt. I was guiding the adults and thought I was somebody. Funny how some memories stick with you. That was 56 years ago.

I remember mine well. It was in Preston, Connecticut, February 1971. I spectated on a cast and watched my first instance of cheating by watching a guy judging his own dog, which treed a possum, but somehow it was a coon when we got back to the club. I was young, impressionable, and was riding with the perpetrator.
