Couldn't find anyone else to argue with on that day, I suppose? Yes, I do mean that I only show her at a certain level of event. Several reasons behind it. First of all, would it really be fair for me to bring national level dogs to a local event? That's not something I make a practice of doing, because quite frankly I don't feel like I've accomplished anything winning over folks that maybe haven't had as much practice as I have showing a dog, or that may be there showing their hunting dogs for fun (or maybe their kids/spouse are). That would just make me feel like a witch, and I feel like it discourages people that are new or still learning. Not to mention, even if I take a dog I just hunt to a local event, SOMEONE ends up making smart remarks because apparently a dog acting like it has some sense on the bench automatically makes it a "show dog" and it's suddenly not fair if I win that day. I don't begrudge anyone that wants to show on a local level. It's just my choice to only show my hunting dogs there, and handle dogs for other folks if they don't want to do it themselves for whatever reason or help them out if they ask. That's entirely my own personal feelings, based on experiences I've had over the years. Maybe it's not the same for everyone, and if so then that's great!
Thanks Cleo. I hope you have a safe trip this week.
I don't necessarily "hold" mine so much as I'm picky about which events I take them to. That's just my personal preference, and what makes doing it "satisfying" to me I guess. I'm happy with the wins I've put on my dogs thus far though. I don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with how much or how little (or where) people show their dogs, as long as they're having fun doing it! I do wish I had the leisure of being able to take more time off work to travel to more events, but the nature of my job makes it hard to do it often. I hope in years to come that won't always be the case. I definitely haven't been able to show nearly as much as I'd like this year...seems like when you have the money and dogs you really want to get out, that's when you have the least time!
Good luck with your new dog Mr. Stevenson. I'd love to see a photo of him. The same cross Stormy was out of was made a second time, but I don't know the whereabouts of any of the pups. They'd probably be about 3 years old now.
