I thought you were happy

With how things were going at the end of last season. What changed?

Its difficult to replace hounds like Irene, Flo or Rebel. Luke & Bonnie may tree as many coon but will never have the style or class.

Kansas season opened tonight. Steve had Roscoe & Maggie, I took Luke & Pearl, Phil Davis had Chief and a young gyp. We did end up treein 7 trees with coon and caught a couple in thick grassy swamp. Sure enjoyed open nights with friends and good hound work.

Scott Cole was up with Sadie. Phil had Chief & I took Luke. First deal Luke went through a section, we had driven around and sent Sadie & Chief. They got treed in a big oak with lots of leaves and no coon seen. We did tree coon on the next 5 drops. The hounds went hunting and got treed with a coon. That's important to old grumpy men. It was 22 deg and moonlight but coon were out.

Whats it take to get into the hunting group. Do you have to be from another state?

Cleaned fish until 2 PM. Ate dinner and fed cattle until 5. Left to hunt at 6. Treed 4 coon and ready for rest. No time to socialize for the old man.

Didnt hunt Saturday, watched OU vs Baylor. Scott was up tonight with Sadie & Molly. Molly is from Mailes Rattler and I belive a gyp Billy Sexton had bred. The conditions seemed like coon treeing should be great. The Hounds had to work hard to find a track. A couple times over a mile and no strike. They did manage to tree three trees with coon.

My buddy just moved to Kansas

Near Manhattan. He keeps sending me pictures of what looks like herds of small bears with ringed tails eating all the corn he puts out for deer. Maybe I can eradicate a few for him next year. I’ll have to start saving now for the out of state license, they’re a bit ridiculous.

Nick, coon in northern Kansas will be larger than SE Kansas. It's good hunting in both.

Tim was up with Kate & Ben, I took Bonnie & Irene. First drop the hounds went .7 miles to a big oak. No coon seen but lots of leaves. The next 4 drops we treed coon. Bonnie looked good on two & sister Kate had her two. I'm sure disappointed on my young hounds. They better start getting coon treeing on their minds.

Scott Cole was up for a hunt last night with Sadie & Molly. It was 60 degrees, 20 mph wind and light showers. First drop Sadie & Luke treed a Conn around 300 yds. Then we moved 15 miles to get out of rain. Treed anouther coon 370 yds. Hounds worked a track through a section but we caught them before getting in mining pits. Sadie got treed at 1000 yds on a big oak den. Hounds split treed right before a downpour, both had coon. Thought we treed five but I cant remember # 5 this morning. Guess this old age deal hit me again. Now I remember, Luke went .75 miles & got treed by himself with a coon.

Tim Stone brought his young dogs up for a hunt. I took Luke and Pearl. Pearl is a young gyp from Phil Vogels Gr Nt Bella. Luke treed 6 trees with coon. The young hounds participated and chased a few .

Steve & I hunted Maggie, Bonnie and a couple young ones. Bonnie went in 350 yds and blew up treed with a coon, the others covered. We sent on, Bonnie blew up treed around 225 yds with #2. Next drop Bonnie got treed at 550 yds, Maggie covered. Big hedge with plenty of exit limbs. Slick with coon 20 yds up a big oak. Next drop Maggie & Bonnie trees right together with a big boar around 600 yds. Maggie falls treed at 215 yds with a coon. Next drop they go in 425 yds and get treed on a slick oak. We send on, nothing happens. We move where Maggie goes a half mile and trees on a big oak, no coon found. Bonnie gets treed on a maple den tree on the next drop. Last drop Bonnie goes 50 yds and trees on a big oak. Lots of leaves still but no coon found. Old timers call them slick trees. Send on, they strike at 300 yds, run a good track a short distance and tree. They had 3 coon in that tree. The gyps look good most of the time but Luke hasn't missed having a coon for several nights and that will spoil a fella.

Treed a couple Tuesday night. The forcast was for 52 mph winds. It was howling around 8 pm but let up around 9pm. Tim wasn't sure the guide was all that wise.

Tonight the grandsons were over to hunt. The first drop was a drawn out deal and didnt produce a coon. The next three drops Luke & Bonnie treed coon. Peyton did a great job as trigger man.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Scott had Sadie & Molly, I took Luke & Pearl. A little rain was falling but the temperature was good. I did figure tracking would be poor. The first drop they struck around 200 yds & went to 350 quickly. Took a circle in a cut bean field and headed toward us as hard as they could run. Put Mr Coon in a pond whistle. I sure thought they would have caught him. Next drop Luke & Sadie went 3/4 mile and we gathered them. They struck quick on the next drop. Crossed a big creek and made a 200 yd circle and caught a large coon in the creek close to us. Next drop didnt strike. Next drop struck around 400, went to 900 to a road, running a good track 400 yds parallel to the road then crossed and took it 350 yds up a ditch to a hole. Luke & Sadie left out and fell treed 300 yds deeper on a litter. Next drop they went 600 yds to strike & put it in a doser pile. Next drop 250 yds, struck & treed quick with a coon. Last drop the hounds got split up. They pretty much went a half mile and searched back toward us. The showers were intensifying so we headed in.

Scott was up again with Sadie & Molly. I believe Scott is making coon catchers out of those two gyps. Luke & Irene did their part. First drop Sadie & Luke got treed a half mile in on a big creek. They had two in that tree. Next drop they go .75 mile and tree a big boar. Next drop through the section and didnt strike. The young hounds trail for awhile and didnt tree. We saw two setting up close to them. Next drop Luke & Molly gets treed on a double. All four go in and works a bad track 15 minutes and tree a coon at 550 yds. Last drop all fore go in 50 yds and tree a coon. Five trees with coon is a good hunt for us so we headed in.

Jim Combs, John Bishop from Illinois, Tom Jennings from Ohio & Sparky from Pennsylvania was here to hunt. The first drop ended up with hounds split up. Two den trees, one slick tree and one tree with a coon. Next drop a split tree, one hound had a coon the others didn't. Next drop the hounds went .7 miles and were treed slick. John and Jim gave up early. There headed to Ada for the Battle of Breeds hunt on Friday. The next drop the hounds worked a track 250 yds and treed a coon. Last drop Tom's & Sparkys hounds treed a tree with three coon at 250 yds. Luke was .74 miles treed with a coon. I sure enjoyed visiting with old friends. Hope those fellas from back east do some winning at the Battle.

Sounds like John and Jim were holding y’all back 😁. Are you walking or riding an ATV during these hunts? On some of these hunts, your dogs are covering a lot of ground.
