Mac, My sister lives north of you in Pa., Blair Co. They are overrun with porcupines. Pa. kept the season closed on them for a long time because they breed so slow, they were afraid that too many of them would get killed and they wouldn't recover. It takes them like 18 months to produce one baby. Pa. Game Comm. finally had to open up a season because of the damage they do.
Porcupines will kill every pine tree around. They climb about 2/3rds up to the top and ring the tree just like a beaver and the tree dies. A few years ago they came through my land in Va. and wiped out just about every pine tree in the woods. They also gnaw on the rubber coated flexible brake lines on vehicles, causing people to loose their brakes. Porcupines are crazy about salt, they will risk anything to get at it. Road salt collects under cars and trucks and they get under there and chew on anything not metal.
