Treed my last coon in 2011 at 10:25 pm. Bobby Carter was with me as he was most of this past year. We had ladies night out again--just these girl dogs. Erik our Bear population is estimated to be somewhere between 300 to 500-thats just in Middle Georgia. There are two other areas-North & South that may have more than us. On a more somber note a hog hunting freind of mine was trying to find his dog earlier and was deep in the swamp without a light and darkness caught him. I went and got him, we used the tracker to locate his collar-but no dog. Good chance the dog has been killed by a deer hunter. thanks to all of you who have submitted your input on here-I will try to do a better job in the future. Good Luck-Happy New Year!

Sea Hunt? C. Hunt!

some of you may not be old enough to remember the TV show Sea Hunt-staring Loyd Bridges-Jeff Bridges Father. I ended up taking a dunk tonight. The night started out OK-we had Chris and his wife and Bobby. Our dogs split treed a world apart and our guest had to leave to see about their baby. By the time Bobby and I hook back up we have looked at 2 coons and the two dogs have been recast but once again are not together. May Flower trees off to the West while Reject is driving a track straight South which I know spells trouble if it keeps going. May Flower has 2 up her tree and Reject unloads deep. we put her in the box and proceed in a southerly direction. Did I mention we have been receiving a fair amount of rainfall. He does not sound that far across the creek but he is just far enough that we cannot shine the tree. I had it -just a few more feet and feet don't fail me now. I hollered to Bobby-I'm going in! He said later that I did not have to tell him-cause he could see the whole thing plain as day and that I made a big splash too. found the coon-in fact I squalled this one out but I did not turn him loose to retree it. No Sir-I've got to cross back on the log I just fell off of. Made it back just fine-perhaps the added weight(hip boots full) helped keep my balance and besides that-I am dry now and we looked at 5 coons to start the New Year 2012-Best Day of my life so far!

Ed is having more work performed on him at the hospital today-this was scheduled and from what I am told necessary for both his health and safety while he is going thru these procedures. John are you hunting Buzz by himself? If you are 100% sure the trees are slick-cut him loose and send him on-do not let him return to that tree-if the track did indeed go on then he should be encouraged to finish it with the meat. By hunting him by himself you cannot blame it on another dog and he should get better. He can make it thru high school with others-but if he makes it thru college it has got to be by himself!

Ed

Additional stints were put in today. Ed was in recovery when I spoke with Mrs. Mead--everything is looking good at this point. Should get to come home tomorrow. It was 23 there this morning-it was 18.5 down here-not often that it is colder here than it is there. John still think the answer is to keep hunting him solo and go as often as possible. Was he more accurate when you were not knocking as many out to him? Just somehting else to think about. When Warrior Creek CW was young I did not think there for awhile that he could tree a coon after 12 oclock. So I just kept taking him late at night until he began to come up with the coons. He could tree those easier ones early at night and after hunting him late at night he became a much better dog. All are different-when they are worth it you just got to find a way to solve the problem. So many times just hunting and maturity will take care of a lot. What I cannot breed in--I,m not going to try to beat out.

Mr. Meade

CW, thanks for keeping us informed on Ed...Glad to hear he's doing OK. Steber the dog with the cough, concerns me more than the one slick treeing. wish ya the best on both.

Had a nice long talk by phone this afternoon with Ed--sounded real good-just has to take it easy for a few days. He was talking dogs so I was listening. If we all can just get him to take about a month-then he should be back better than ever- that is a pretty tall order-What do you think Terry?

cave

Found a new cave last night, with lots of coon tracks coming in and out of it... Dogs treed about 20 yards from it....Pretty cool!

Sent two pups to Kentucky by way of the Grand American. In the past pups that went to Kentucky have done rather well, hope that will be the case with these as well. There are 4 pups here that I intend to play with. Hopefully there are two more litters on the way-products of a deliberate effort to put more on the ground just in case something should happen like what happened to 6 Again. Stanley Bowling is bringing a male pup to the Winter Classic from Reject X White Oak Mountain Stylish Diana -will be glad to lay my eyes on this little rascal. As it stands right now I plan on being there Friday morning and most of that day. Think last year was the first one I did not participate in at all. Tried to get this hunt here in Middle Georgia-we showed Fred Miller and Steve Fielder our local park and fairgrounds in Macon and the Perry Agricenter but it was Albany they selected and that is where it remains. Hope to see many of you there!

David our deer seson goes out Sunday the 15th and as far as we are concerned the real Coon Season begins down here. I'd like to know more about the Becky female you mentioned. How many people are going to be down for the Winter Classic? I have heard from a few--Ed has not said that he is not going to make it but if there is any risk associated with the trip-then there is always next year. John sounds as if you female was dropping pups on consecutive days-let us know how she and the pups are doing. It was 27.9 here this morning-We hunted in 30mph gust last night-managed to tree one that we saw. The best track of the night was driven hot into a hollow-guess that coon was thinking " the heck with this-knew I should have stayed home tonight." Got a female that is due to whelp on the 20th so I'm going to spend a little time making some cozy accomidations for her and those pups. One day it is in the 70'-two days later we can be in the teens-He won't put more on us in one day than we can hanle-So make this the best day of your life!

John -Oueen to the King sounds like a good deal -Hope those other pups make it. David-will you be down for Albany? If Ed's truck is not parked outside in his usual spot-well it just will not seem right. Guess word had gotten out about the low turnout at these local hunts and that cheap wins were there for the taking. Last night I got to see a club house full of middle Georgia hunters for the first time in quite awhile. The club made money for a change and the weather cooperated too. The May Flower female out of Terrence Baliff's Gr Nt Ch Jet V Again X Gr Nt Ch Blue Bio Blue Flower earned her third 1st place in UKC. I slit a 1st strike-so she ended up with 437 1/2 plus. The last drop the dogs treed a small coon fairly close with Flower taking one out of there in a hurry. The narrow woods allows a coon to strecht out every once in awhile and this was the case last night. I love this when I'm coon hunting -not so much on a cast. After scoreing their tree-we stepped over to a hill to listen for her . Barely within hearing I treed her and we covered the mile distance as quickly as possible. With time now expired-all that was left to do was score her tree. I was pleased to show the cast the largest coon I've seen in sometime right in the very top of the tree. The closest dog to her in the cast had 50 plus. GOOD NIGHT!

Dale Parker stayed over and hunted with us last night. Isn't it amazing how much better the dogs perform without that old scorecard along. The night before we had a problem getting the coons we treed to look (and yes the coons were there)--Hard to get one to look if it isn't up there. Last night coons are staring down or looking as we walked in to the dogs treed. All three of us were scoring each drop -with a slightly different interpretation of how to score each dog. Mostly bringing up situations where people have tried to put the screws to us in the past. Makes for a lot of laughs. Dale's plans are to be in Albany for this years Winter Classic--I hope to see alot of you there-we know it is a long trip for many of you and as I have said before -we measured it. It,s the same distance from up there down here as it is from down here to up there--think I have finally convinced Ed of that fact and now he knows it does get cold down here sometimes, too. One day closer-see you soon!

Rain on the way!

Going to head for the woods pretty quick--forecast goes from 20% to 70% between 7 and 8pm. Well you got to try right! Depending on how much rain we get between now and next weekend will determine what everyones going to run into water wise when you get down here for this years Classic. We have had a dry year-which hopefully means you will not be swimming-just wading--bring hip boots! Had a good phone visit with Terry Tucker this afternoon. Those Boomer pups are sure bringing some kinda big dollars--people would be advised to go ahead and breed to Boomer -I hope the dog lives to be a hundred and I don't ever die-but we know neither one of those things are going to happen. One day closer --I'm gone to the woods to get wet one way or another.....to be continued !

Winter Classic 2012

My plans as of right now are to be there far as long as possible on Friday. Appreciate the pm's from folks about this years Classic. Going to do my best to guide some Hog hunters in a competition on Saturday-should not conflict with the Friday and Saturday night coon hunts-how ever sleep or lack of it-could be a factor. What the heck-sleep later. Sure hope to get to visit with a lot of folks this year-I was between surgies last year. My son is running the Organic operations, among other things, for a farm in SW Georgia some 30 miles from Albany-will visit him on Friday morning then head over to the Classic for the remainder of the day. Many of you are making plans for this trip. Wish each and every one of you a safe journey and return home. Please make it a point to say HI. I am bringing a camera -have been guilty far to often of not taking enough pictures-some of these opportunities may never present themselves again. One day closer.
