RAIN

Just checking in on you Mr. Jack to see if your feeling any better, I'm hoping you are. Lots of rain coming in this week so looks like the hunting will be shut down until it moves out then all the swamps will be flooded. I have a meeting tomorrow but rest of the week will be off if it rains like they say. Will give you a shout one of those days and we will get together again and talk hounds and coon hunting. Take Care.

Tramp & Doll V

Clayton and Chris came by last night and picked up Tramp and took him and Doll V to the swamp for a short hunt. Chris said both dog hunted good and did a good job. They treed one and looked at it. They had gotten a late start, so they called it a night when they got back to the 4-wheeler. If my leg will let me I think I'm going to try to go for a little while tonight. If i do I will tell you about it tomorrow.

Good to hear you're doing a little better Mr Jack. We've been thinking about you. We're gonna have to get you Mississippi boys healed up. Between you and Mr Steve Bankston being laid up it's been kinda boring around here! Hope you get to go tonight and have a good hunt.

Tramp & Doll V----Gin

Clayton came by late yesterday evening and picked up Tramp. He and Chris was going hunting and taking Tramp and Doll V. They said the coons were moving good. They said they turned the dogs loose and they struck pretty quick and treed in a short distance. They walked into the tree and saw the coon and left him to run again. They moved on down the swamp and turned loose again and almost the same thing happened, the dogs struck and treed in short order and again they walked in to them and saw the coon and again left the coon to run again. They loaded the dogs and moved on down the swamp and turned the dogs loose, but this time the dogs had to go hunting. They struck in deep, an old feeder track. They worked him out of there and got to running him. They treed in pretty deep and had a ways to walk. When they got to them the dogs were treed up a large Turkey Pine. Clayton said they were going to let the dogs have this one, but due to Chis's fancy shooting. They decided to leave this one to run again too. It was getting pretty late by this time and Chris had to be at work early, so they called it a night.

Gin
After Clayton had left with Tramp. I had taken a pain pill a little earlier and my back was feeling better, so I decided to take Gin out for a short run. We went to the river and I was hoping that she would tree a quick one, for I didnt know how long my back would hold out if I had to do a lot of walking. She went in about 200 yrds and struck a good track, went about 50 more yrds and treed. I said to myself(good girl) I walked in to her and she was treed up a pretty good sized oak. I saw the coon pretty quick and I was going to put it out to her, because she hadnt been hunted much lately. I think she had only been out a couple of times since the winter classic, because I had come down with the flu and then this Siatic nerve deal. I had seen the coon a couple of timesand then I looked and looked and could not find him again, so I walked in and petted her up good and we started back toward the 4-wheeler. When I had crossed the small branch that I had crossed comming in I looked back and there he was sitting right in the top. We left him and decided that that was a short one so we would try another one, but Gin would have to work for the next one. We went on down next to the river and I turned her loose up a slough. I didnt have much water in it where we were at but I knew thr farther she went up it the more water she would get into. She struck a cold track about 400 yrds in and started working it. She moved the track on up the slough to about 600 yrds and I decided to move on up and get closer to her. She was trailing up the other side of the slough from me. I moved to within about 300 yrds of her when I stopped to listen She was crossing the slough back to my side. When she came out omn my side there is about 300 yrds of pretty oak woods and drops off into another slough that is deeper and a lot wider with big cypress trees growing in it. She worked the coon in this slough for a while and I was either hoping she would loose it or trail back close enough to catch her, but none of this was going to happen. She treed about 75 yrds out in this slough and she was sounding good, so I pulled up my boots, got my rifle and started to her. I didnt get far from the bank and I was over my boots. Thats about as deep as it got, but there were downed trees and limbs out in there that i had to cross that made the going pretty tough, but I finally got to her and she was treed up a smaller tree that went into a big cypress. I was pretty well done in by this time so I didnt even try to walk around the tree and shine. I shined fron where I was at. I'm pretty shure she had him so I just pettied her up and told her I would do better next time. We made our way back out of there with her swimming most of the time. That sure would have been a good tree to have taken a picture on with Gin upon it and the water about half way up her back. It sure was good tobe back out huntin after about a month lay off.

Thank you Bill, Scott, Chris and Dave

for your good thoughts toward me. I really didn't intend to get into that rough of a hunt, but you know how it is when your dog trees, you got to go to them. I was pretty well stove up yesterday and today, so I didn't hun last night or tonight, but if everything goes ok. I will go again tomorrow night. I talked to my friend Steve Bankston on the phone today and he's having it pretty rough with the wrist operation and now a hernia operation. I hope every thing goes good Steve. Take care.

Gin

I took Gin out for another run tonight. I didn't know wheather or not Chris and Clayton were going or not when I left, but I talked to Chris on the phone later and he had come by after I left and picked up Tramp and Sheba, so I will tell about their hunt later. The first drop Gin hunted good about a 300 yrd circle, came back without ever opening. I picked her up and went on up the swamp and dropped her out again. She went in about 15o yrds and struck a feeder track and went to working it. she made about a 450 yrd circle and headed southwest angling toward a blacktop road. I came back out of the swamp to the blacktop road. When I looked at my Garmin she was about 600 yrds up the swamp still going toward the road. When I got up even with her she was just coming into the road so I caught her there. I didn't want her in the road and where she was headed the river is up and got some of the sloughs backed up to much in there. I loaded her up and we headed to the swamp farther down the river. She struck a good track about 200 yrds in and really moved it out of there for about another 150 yrds and locked up treed. I drove the 4-wheeler to about 100 yrds of her and walked on in. She was treed up a huge oak and I could see pretty quick that it was a den tree. It had a hole in it about the size of a gallon jug. I shined for a little while anyway, but he wasn't on the outside. We came back to the 4-wheeler and went on in closer to the river. I turned her up an ole dry slough bed and she went in about 300 yrds and I could tell on the Garmin she was working an ole track, but it was so cold she never opened on it . She worked it for about 250 yrds and just treed. I walked in to her. She was treed up a large oak. I shinned it for a while, It could have been there, but I never could get him to look, I think she just did the best she could with that one. We'll try him again one night a little earlier and maybe get a little better track. I petted Gin up a little and told her we would get him next time. We walked back to the 4-wheeler, and by this time the pain pill that I had taken earlier for my back was beginning to wear off so we decided to call it a night.

Mr. Jack

Glad to see you're back at it a little. Been down your road myself & it's not fun. I'm not sure which is worse- a pinched nerve or kidney stones, but both can really be painfull. Take care, Ron.

Tramp and Sheba

Thanks Ron, this siatic nerve is slowly getting better. I never had Kidney stones, but I have seen people with them, sure wouldn't want to go there. take care.----Jack

Chris and Clayton came by the other night and picked up Tramp and Sheba. They hunted Tramp alone first. They said he went in pretty deep and struck a feeder track. worked it out of there and did a good job on it and treed. Chris walked in to him and he had to go thru some bad stough to get to him. Walked on in to him and looked at the coon. Petted ole Tramp up some and took him back and put him up and took Sheba and Claytons puppy. They said Sheba did a good job on two different coons and they looked at both of them and Claytons puppy did a good job with her. We were going again last night, but got rained out.

Tramp and Gin

Chris and Cody and me took these two out for a run tonight and really had a good hunt. I thought Clayton was going with us, but when we got to Clayton's house. I didn't go in, but Chris went in and said Clayton was already in bed. Chris said Clayton never goes to bed before 10 or 11 oclock when he's not hunting. Chris said when he walked into Claytons bedroom and asked him was he going hunting with us, Clayton Just grinned at him and said he didn't think he would go tonight. I asked Chris If he thought Clayton might be sick or something. Chris said no that he thought Clayton had other things on his mind tonight, so I'll just leave it at that. I'll get back to my coonhunt. 1st drop, they went in a little over 500 yrds and struck a feeder track. They moved the track on in a couple hundred yrds, so we decided we had better catch up a little, so we went around on another road and they were still about 400 yrds from us so we hit an ole woods road and went in a ways and when we stopped to listen both dogs were treed solid. we rode in as far as possible on the 4-wheelers. When we stopped we were about 100 yrds from where they were treed. We got the rifle and walked on in to them. They were treed up a big oak. Chris and I had done walked around the tree shinning when Cody told us that he had seen the coons eye. Chris walked back around on the other side of the tree where Cody had told him he saw the coon and there he was. I'll tell you these boys of Chris,s and Claytons are sure making some good coonhunters. These dogs hadn't had a coon in a while so we knocked this one out to them. 2nd drop we turned them in close to the river. They went in about 450 yrds and struck a working track and moved it out of there about 300 more yrds and we decided we had better catch up. Again when we stopped the 4-wheelers to listen the dogs were treed solid. We rode into about 100 yrds of the dogs and walked on in to them. they were treed up a pretty good sized oak. We didn't see anything at first and then Chris shook a vine and he looked at us with both eyes. We petted up the dogs and left this one to run again. We moved on up the swamp a ways and made our 3rd drop. We turned in on an ole slough. They went in about 300 yrds and struck an old feeder track and started working it. the dogs began to split up Gin was moving to the left and going deeper. Tramp circled the slough and started working back up the other side for about 200 yrds and treed and Gin pulled back to him and treed with him. We walked in to them and they were treed up a big vine That went up into two pretty good sized oaks. When Chris pulled the vine that they were treed on the coon looked at us from one of the oaks. We petted up the dogs and again left this one to run again. We Walked back to the 4-wheelers and although it was still pretty early we decided that we had had a good hunt so we called it a night.

TRAMP and GIN

Glad to be reading your stories again MR. Jack and that your back out in those swamps doing what you love to do, coon hunting. Hope that nerve pain is fading away and won't be back. Enjoy these cool nights as long as they last because hot summer is right around the corner. 3 for 3 is a great hunt down here in the south and sounds like Tramp and Gin got it done quick. I'm headed to Hammond this morning for surgery, hoping to get this behind me and get back in the woods within the next month. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Tramp, Gin & Doll V

Chris, Clayton, Carson, Cole and me hit the woods tonight with these three hounds, first drop They went in about 700 yrds and struck a pretty good track. They ran it about 300 yrds and treed up a large oak out in the middle of a slough. We shined for a few minutes and found him sitting in a hollowed out place about 3/4 way up the tree. you could just see his back. We left him to run again and moved on up the swamp. We turned the dogs loose off the edge of a big field. We talked a little and when Clayton looked at his Garmin they were over 900 yrds in, so we decided we had better get closer. We moved around on another road and the dogs were in next to the river. We moved on around to get closer. When we stopped the 4-wheelers to listen all dogs were treed. We were able to ride to about 50 yrds of the tree and this made it easier for Clayton to walk to the tree. I'm sure glad to see Clayton getting better, but he still has a long way to go. We all looked for a while, and then Chris walked under the tree and shook a vine and the coon looked from way out on the end of a limb up near the top. It was a big coon and we decided to knock this one out to the dogs. Clayton was standing under the tree petting the dogs and when Chris shot the coon. The coon fell out directly over Clayton's head and Clayton shouted and moved faster than I had seen him move in a long time. The coon didn't fall on him, but if he hadn't moved it would have. Needless to say we all got a laugh out of that one including Clayton. We went back to the 4-wheelers and loaded the dogs and moved on up the swamp. We turned loose again at the edge of a big slough. They went in about 400 yrds and struck a good track and moved it on in another 300 yrds and treed. We drove in a close as we could get, but we were still about 150 yrds from the tree. Clayton said he would stay at the 4-wheelers this time so the rest of us walked on in to the tree. They were treed up a large oak. There were a lot of smaller trees around the oak making it near impossible to see the bigger tree. We shinned for a while and Chris thought he seen the coon, But wasn't sure, but we were pretty sure that he was there so we petted the dogs and went back to the 4-wheelers. We decided to call it a night and started back to the trucks. I had Tramp and Gin on my four wheeler and clayton had doll V on his and Chris was up ahead on his. Chris had already gotten to the trucks before me and Clayton got there. Wellsome way or other the coon had fallen off Chris 4-wheeler and rolled underneath Clayton's tailgate. Well we all know how bad Doll V hates a coon. Well here comes clayton up to his truck, and he gets Doll V off the 4-wheeler and tells his son Carson to go ahead and load the 4-wheeler on the trailer. Well about this time Doll V see's the dead coon laying on the ground underneath the truck. She almost drags Clayton under neath the truck. UKC would have to shut this whole thread down if I told you what Clayton called Chris and I really cant blame him, but these two are the best of friends, and there is never a dull moment when you are hunting with them. Now unless the coon did some how fall off the front of Chris's 4-wheeler and roll underneath the back of claytons truck like Chris said it did this was kind of a bad trick to pull on Clayton with his feet the shape that they are in, but regardless I'm sure Chris will get paid back some where down the line. These two are always pulling something on each other. good hunting.

Good Story Mr Jack!

Hope things are going well. Sounds like you have some nice hounds you are hitting the woods with. They are showing you some coons. We had a small snow storm yesterday but it has all melted. I got Nails papers sent in. You take care and Happy Hunting.

Jerry's pen

Thank you Scott, We have been hitting the woods pretty hard since I got able to walk again. Tramp and Gin have been doing a good job. We have been hunting Doll V some too and she is doing good. I hope the weather is doing good
up there so you can do a lot of hunting. Nails is doing great and she is really a beautiful female, to me they don't get much better looking than her.

Chris and Clayton had been wanting to go down to Jerry Wheats and hunt in his coon pen and I had been telling Jerry that we were coming so tonight we loaded up the dogs and headed south. Now I have hunted in these pens before,so let me tell you there is a lot of difference hunting in these pens than it is going to the swamp. If your dog can consistently tree coons in Jerry's pen he can tree coons anywhere in the world, and If you don't believe me ask anybody that's hunted there. We turned Doll V and Clayton's pup loose and they made a circle around the 50 acre pen and didn't strike. We turned Tramp loose with them and they made about another half circle around the pen and struck a track. Clayton's pup did a good job on the track and Treed first. They were treed up a large oak That had real big limbs that probably extended out 30 feet or so in every direction. We were all looking all over the limbs and up in the top of the tree and some one found the coon about ten foot up the tree in a fork and it was a big coon. We left him to run again and came back to Jerry's shop and sit around there and talked for a while and decided to go back and try it again. This time we took Tramp, Doll V and Gin. They hunted in there for about an hour With out being able to get on anything. Then Gen struck a track and moved it back up the pen aways and treed. We walked in to her and seen it had a slick tail so we backed out a little and let her tree. I think this was the third one she had treed since I had her and every other time she treed one I didn't have a training collar on her, but this time I did, so she got trained a little. She came on out to me and we caught the other dogs and called it a night.

Blue Book

Mr Jack,

Really good looking pages in the Blue Book this year. I am really glad to see the pictures of those great hounds and the pedigrees. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Take Care,
Scott

Tell phil he can post up on me some time if he wants to and let us all know he is still alive.lol. I haven't forgot about Traveler. That was a nice ad on him that you put in the blue Book. Tramp and Gin

I thought there was someone else coming to go hunting with me tonight, but about 9 oclock I decided they were not coming so I loaded up Tramp and Gin and went down the river a peace and turned loose out of a deer plot. They went in about 200 yrds and struck a working track. They were having trouble with it, but they kept it moving. They kept moving the track steady south. You could tell on the Garmin that the ole coon was feeding. After about 400 yrds the track started turning East. They worked the track East for about another 350 yrds and then turned north. The track was beginning to warm up. They were pushing the coon pretty hard now and I kept listening for a tree bark, but it didn't come and they kept moving north. The Garmin said there was a creek in there and I was looking for the coon to run it for a while, but that didn't happen. They crossed the creek and kept moving north. The next time I looked at my garmin they were a little over 900 yrds. I decided I had better catch up. I hit an old woods road. I thought it might get me closer to them, but I was gradually getting farther away from them. I turned on another road, but it didn't help either. When I looked at the Garmin the dogs were 1.2 miles from me, so I had to turn around and go back. the next time I listened the dogs were treed solid, but were still almost a mile from me. I went around to a big opening where the had clear cut a big field of pines. I could hear the dogs good across that field, but they were still a 1000 yrds from me. I could have got a lot closer to the dogs if I could have road my 4-wheeler across that field, but there were a lot of small bushes and trees that they had cut and I was afraid that I would snag a tire, so I went on around looking for a road that would get me closer.
I finally found an old road that took me around to the backside off the field and when I had went as far as I could go I was still 600 yrds from the dogs. I got my rifle and walked on in to the dogs. They had been treed for over an hour, but they were still treeing hard. They were treed up a medium sized gum tree. They must have gotten close on him to make him climb the gum tree, because this was about as pretty a swamp as you would want to walk into and there were a lot of big trees. I found the big coon pretty quick sitting in the top of the gum. The dogs had done a good job on this one so I was going to knock it out to them. I shot the coon and he lodged up there. I shot him several times, but he was lodged good so We just had to leave him up there. I petted Jin and Tramp some and we started our trek back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Gin

I thought I had someone to hunt with tonight but again (NO SHOW). I loaded up Gin and headed to the swamp. I dropped her out off an old woods road. She left there like a shot and moved in about 200 yrds and struck a good track. She was so hoarse that I could hardly hear her. I guess it was from her and tramp treeing so long last night. If I had been on a nite hunt and someone would have asked me if that was my dog I would have told them no, that my dog has a loud high pitched bawl. She drove that track in there about 500 yrds and locked up treed. She sounded a little better treed, but not like she normally does. I drove into about 50 yrds of her and walked on in to her. She was treed up a large oak. I shined for a little while, but there is just too many leaves on most of the trees now and if he don't look your not likely to find him. I petted Jin and told her she had done her job well and I would try to do mine better next time. We walked back to the 4-wheeler, loaded up and headed to the river. I turned her down a small branch that goes through the swamp on its way to the river. She left there on the run. She went in about 600 yrds and had never opened. I went around on another road to get closer. By the time I had gotten around closer to her. She was headed up an ole slough and where she was headed was rough country and it was getting late and I didn't want to have to go in there where she was headed, so I called her out and we called it a night.
