Yep, we finally got some very much needed rain this past week and a little this morning. After last year and just about zero acorns the game around here is really going for the acorns. Even the deer have not started any pre rut activity. Normally by this time of year we start to see a few scrapes and a lot of movement but so far nothing. Coons are really spread out too...plenty of food in the woods right now.

just got home long weekend of baseball last tournament, going to concentrate on hunting now. I will have to catch up with you and come over for a hunt. The female sounds like she is turning it on I got to come see her.

Just got in from a real nice hunt this evening...not in the woods 5 minutes to the first track. It was red hot and they screamed about 150 yards to a big ole' den tree. Didn't cut them loose a full minute and they were back on another red hot track. Ran this one maybe 75 yards and treed. This one was on the outside so I gave it to the dogs. Good track work and good hard tree dogs is always nice to see. The wind got up pretty good and we hunted about another hour with not even a bark. Saw several deer in the woods, zero interest from the dogs. I am happy!!!

JohnHunting Is

going pretty good, waiting for the hope female to come in heat so I can breed her to Patch.

We have had a lot of days of nice warm weather and some days of cold seems like the coon are running right at dark and then later in the night, Moon is turning so the coon hunting will straighten up.

How is your hunting coming along?

Joe, I promised some pictures but my camera quit...it started working again and I snapped a few earlier...she shut out the Walker on this tree. Seems to have a pretty cold nose but definitely wont stand on her head.

Joe,
Just got in from a hunt tonight...the little girl shut the walker dog out again...this time on a lay up coon. She is a tree dog and showing more and more like she has a pretty decent nose on her, especially for only 11 months old. We left the coon up the tree and went on hunting. When we were done I rode back out to the tree to see if the coon had came down. Sure enough, he was no where in sight. So we turned loose to see if they would run and tree it again. No track...not even a bark or whine. I decided to check the tree just to make sure the coon didn't move to another branch and maybe still be up there ...then I see a big hollow I hadn't seen before. it was a big old oak, but also a den tree. He must have went back inside for the night.
It is supposed to rain Saturday...we might want to reschedule, I want to go but want to have a decent hunt too...what do you guys think??? best regards, Martin

I did leave out the part where she ran her first possum last night...well maybe not her first. Lately, the last couple hunts she has been bumping something off...really wont take it nowhere and she doesn't hit a tree at all. At first we thought it might be her messing with a rabbit in the woods. She knows it's not a coon so she wont tree it. When the track ran out and the grinner was up she would "blink" the tree and pass right on by it. Kind of like a gunshy bird dog blinks a covey. I didn't get on her too hard, but I let her know I wasn't happy. She is definitely a gamey hound.

Curious, do you take breaks for deer season because you mean you hunt deer??? Or is it because of the other deer hunters??? I don't take breaks for deer season...they take breaks for me. I own the land.

at least she knows not to complete the job on those grinners but a little heat should fix her up. Keep pounding the woods. I think John is saying that his deer season with gun is coming in so he's not hunting the dogs during that time which I don't blame him cause the bucks out there are massive. I'll call you tomorrow.

John holidays were great so far just have to get the Christmas shopping started. let me know how the pups are coming along. Joe

Joe,
Last night I saw a big boar coon with half a tail in a field we drove down. He took off fast for the woods. I shined him and saw him run about 100 ft into the woods off the edge of the field, he must have been doin' 50 mph!!! I had to drive a little further to park but got the dogs on the track. The male hit the track and took it down in the woods where I saw the coon, but the girl went about 15 ft in the woods and grabbed a pine tree, not a very big one either. I thought she was slick, so I pulled her off of it and sent her to the other two dogs that were further down where the coon went. She turns around and goes back to the slick tree...I get her off of it again. Back she goes, blowin' it down. The other two dogs are bogged down not too far away and I pull her a third time to try and get them some help, meanwhile I just cant believe she is slick treeing!!! She goes right back, so I think maybe I better have a look...might be a possum...nope, she's got the coon!!!! I would have said it was a different one, but it had the bob tail!!! That coon ran a pretty good ways down in the woods and for whatever reason while I was parking the truck he came back almost to the edge of the field and climbed up a pine tree not a foot across...if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it. This little dog is one of the most accurate tree dogs I have ever seen and almost a year old...I bet I don't doubt her no more!!!! How is the rest of this litter doing??? Do you ever get any reports???
