I finally got some snow to hunt in a few days ago. I've hunted 4 of the last 5 days. I've had a couple good hunts where the dogs did some good cold trailing, we just hadn't caught up to one yet. We finally got one jumped and up a tree today. Blizzard, Clutch, and Sniper all did well. I didn't get to take as many pictures as I wanted, because the cat jumped out after I was there about 15 minutes.

A poor quality cell phone pic of the cat I snapped before I got my big camera out. I packed my $1200 camera up the side of the mountain, and this is the best picture I got of the cat. Oops.

Idaho Lightfoot Blizzard & Idaho Lightfoot Clutch

I was taking this video of the dogs treeing, about the time the cat decided to come out of the tree, so I got it on video. I guess it makes up for the lack of pics.

VIDEO
Blizzard, Clutch, and Sniper

Sniper has been doing very well, and has been making every hunt to the end. She has even taken the lead on a few occassions for a while. I think she's going to make a nice little cat dog.

Not yet. We have till the end of March, so hopefully we can get a couple more before the end of season. We had a few more days of decent tracking snow and I hit it hard but never cut a lion track. Now it's warmed up and raining, so our snow keeps melting. It's supposed to cool down and snow again this week.

I remember Tazer had it. Two of the three pups out of Caine X Blizzard have it. One of them just on one side, but my male has it on both sides. We don't see it in every litter, but we have always had a few that have it since we've started breeding Lightfoot dogs.

I've read and been told where Bill Clark said it came from the old Henry/Birdsong Foxhounds that the Lightfoot hounds originated from. I'm not really sure if having it pop out in our hounds of today has any significant meaning. But it's kind of interesting to see that old characteristic still showing up this many years later.

It got me to wondering if anyone else out there also gets this on their hounds. I'm sure some of the old timers out there have seen, or heard, or know more about this trait, and might be able to share some info on what having it show up might be an indicator of.

The Swirl

Our AKC BnT had a ridge on his neck(like a ridgeback) and his line has that or a swirl somewhere. Heavy linebred... Old blood... Been bred out of the modern showdogs...but not his line. He also had throw back yellow eyes(oops!) from back a bit in his ped. When I say HEAVY I mean heavy line bred... It brings out the good and the bad and the odd. I love a swirl, loved it in our horses too. Old wives tales with racehorses, the swirl in a certain place or a "thumbprint" which was an indented area the size of a thumb tip... would mean the horse was good or bad...lol... I forget which!
Line breeding is the way to bring out the best if you make sure the bad traits get weeded out... May your swirl continue to be on GREAT dawgs!
Still LOVE to see each litter and each picture!!!
HappyHunting, Heather

I was looking through some old pictures the other day and came across one I always liked. This was Gambler and Black Jack on a lion tree in Canada. They were 3/4 brothers and both out of old Blitz. Both hounds are gone now, but our last litter of pups carries them both in their pedigree.

Got another one. He's an old male. Probably the big male that's been sneaking around, dodging snares, and up until now has been too smart to catch over the past three years. He finally made a mistake and got caught.

The pups will get their opportunity to go lots this spring on bears. We will get some pictures of them in the woods once they get rolling.
