Yeah I sure liked old Huey.

Of course Darin's a Great guy too. Met him and Darin at Redbone Days and wanted something out of Huey every since. I'm sure glad I've got her. She has got to be one of the best traveling hounds I've ever seen period. We just got back from my in-laws and she rode in the floorboard in front of my wife, becuase we didn't have anymore room. You'd have thought it was made just for her. She's just happy to be there and ready to roll when you pull up.

Huey Winning 3rd. place Reg. at Walker Days!

Huey wasn't just a backyard coonhound. He could do it right where ever you turned him loose.

Of course Darin is not the kind to brag on his hound much but...

When I have the people I did telling me what kind of hound he was I knew without going with him what kind of hound he must have been. Sure wished I could have seen him go myself.

Thanks

Thank you to all for the good words about Huey. Thanks for posting the pics.
Many good people are responsible for Huey and the good cross that he came from. Most notable though Harry Oumedian bred his GrNT Music female to Ed Browns GRNT Twister. This was at a time when most did not know to appreciate Twister and his reproducing ability, Harry and Ed did though. Music was the hottest dog in the breed at the time and most stud dog owners would have given an arm to get to breed to her. Fortunately Harry and Ed got this Niece to Uncle cross made and it worked to make many good coondogs. So I owe a big thank you to these 2 men.
Your Kitty female is a product of mine and Dean Daugherty's project a few years ago. We are not breeders, we just bred coondog to coondog that had alot of good coondogs behind them and it worked. We bred the dogs we hunted at the time. Actually we bought Reckon specifically to breed to Huey, Reckon had traits that we wanted to include to Huey's, Dean finished Reckon to a coondog, we made the first cross and then Dean finished Reckon to NTCH and we made the second cross. A big thank you to Kelly Hyde ( Sawblade ) here, Kelly sold us Reckon, treated us real good and has been a good friend.
Dean and I are glad so many people are enjoying these dogs.
Thanks again.
Darrin

Hey Darrin

I'm sure glad so many have been able to work together all these years to better the breed. If not for that then a lot of what I have and have had sure wouldn't be around. I'm also glad that Kelly/Sawblade bred up Fiddle to the hounds he did. That sure seemed to work well crossing her on the Yellow River stuff. I mean there are alot of real nice hounds that came from her and the Yellow River line. Well that's how Kitty came about. That Huey / Reckon cross seems to have done well in it's own right. From a post the other day I believe there are now already 3 NtCh.'s out of that cross and Kitty will hopefully soon be joining them, for 4.

Cold Night

Well went out Sat. night and where we were at it was cold. Me and the hounds were handling it fine but the coons were hanging close to their dens. About the time they struck we'd run a few hundred yards and tree. Finally, the last one Kitty ran and swam to push it across a big slough. She ended up treeing a double one in a ground hole and one in a den about 10 ft. from each other. The hole was deep and went under a big tree was we left that one and tried for the one in a den. Up until now the den tree holes were well off the ground but I found about a 2 in. by 4in. hole at the bottom of this one. So we went about trying to smoke it out. I had it looking like a old freight train but he wouldn't come out. Then I got a fire going to warm up his rear to get him out. Well that coon was a growling and carrying on all kinds of noise but he wouldn't come out. Finally, he quit so I figured my fire must have gotten to cold but one of the guys said he'd climb up the tree and have a look. Well sure enough the coon was in there dead. He never came out we had BBQ coon, instead of live coon. I've never had one not come out like that and just die before it would. I have done this a bunch of times with success but it sure didn't work this time. That was one tuff or crazy coon one of the two.

Try this

next time. Years ago I smoked a few coon out but not anymore. Keep 1/2 of a soda can with you and stick a regular smoke bomb in it. It wont cause a fire that will get out of hand. Snow melted alot here and will be ice fishing Wed. Dont know why cuz I have no luck ice fishing.Everything is ice covered here. Dont know if Ill get the dogs out anymore or not. How will the weather be in March? Plan on bringing a pop-up to stay in. Xmas wasnt too enjoyable, my wife and I have been sick for almost 2 weeks now. Just starting to get over it now. Take care and will see you in March.

Wish I could John...

But I can't control myself. When my dog has done the work I go the extra mile for sure to make sure they get thier coon on those rough nights. Got a little to much Billy in me I guess. If I didn't have a 22, I'd be choppin them down too or chainsawing now I guess. My buddy also had his B&T female out there that won't tree on a coon in a den or hole. Well unless you're in thick coon that don't work so well at a hunt when your hound just shuts up on a hot track with no tree. So we were trying to show her that they do go in dens, along with the holes like last time. Kitty is teachng these young hounds more than a thing or two. I'll try harder next time though John.

Hey John,

I spent about 16 years hunting in Eastern Oklahoma from about 1976 until 1991. That country has an abundance of Post Oaks growing all over, every other one is hollow. Most all the coon hunters there carries either a chopp'in axe or a little chain saw. If you didn't, you probably won't see a coon in a nights hunt. To this day, I would say there is 100 unmolested den trees down there for every 1 up here in Indiana and Illinois. Up here a den is a blessing, down there they are a nuisance. We do not cut into a den here in Illinois cause most of our coons are treed on the outside. Hope you understand. Old Twister was made his first three years in Oklahoma where probably three fourths of his coons came from a den. I was like Steve, when my young dog trees, I was gonna feed him some hair. It helped make him the tree dog he turned out to be. We understand what you are saying though, hope you understand what we're saying.

Dens;

Ed;

Live & learn I guess! I was infact drawing on my experience from most of the places I have hunted over the years & I have never hunted in Ar. Good to be corrected. I guess that does make some kind of sense. From where I stand with very few dens I think, why would a person ever do something like that! NOW I KNOW!
Sorry if it offended Steve! He seems like a pretty good fella. Sick in the head like the rest of us, LIKES COONDOGS! Take Care, John

Hey John

I wasn't trying to correct you, I call it " enlightenment ". I grew up in Oklahoma as a kid. Down there, life included , fighting dogs, fighting chickens, as a way of life. As I understand, Michael Vick, of NFL fame, also grew up in that invironment. I dare say that he thought of dogs as " just dogs ". He was around it all his life and that was just a part of life. Yeah, he knew it was illegal, but, we all know it's illegal to exceed the speed limit, however, the only thing that can possibly happen is for there to be a collision and some one get killed. Thats not near as bad as fighting dogs or chickens where some get killed or hurt. I guess it depends on where we experienced life. I myself never fought dogs or chickens or never went to observe it, how ever, I understand others doing it when it was a part of life from infancy.

I believe you are a good man John. I'm not better than you or worse. Just a man trying to get through this Ol' life the best I can and with the LOVE OF CHRIST in our hearts, we're gonna make it.

This was what we had going...

Okreds, I appreciate you helping explain what we have going on down here. You've been there and know what it's like. Barnyard, like I've told you before we're good. I didn't think anything about it. The place we went to the other night was the same place we shot the 12 at a few weeks ago. So I guess this might make some appreciate the 12 more. There are a ton of den trees. In fact we treed 2 den holes and 6 den trees before Kitty having the double with a hole and a den 10 ft apart. A few weekends ago the hounds were running them fast enough they never reached a den but like once and we had 3 holes. The rest they got up before they even made it to safety and we caught one on the ground. Well after making 10 dens this night I was giving them something. It's not that the hounds don't have the speed it's that down here once it gets around 20 or lower they hang close to their dens. In fact down here I shoot more coons during the early morning than I do at night on these cold days. So on these nights if you are going to get a coon you almost have to smoke it out. There aren't regs. down here about harming trees or anything and the people sure don't care. Only question they'd have is why didn't you smoke the coon out. Things are just a little different down here. Barnyard if I see you at Redbone Days I have a good example of this that I won't put on the board. Going again this weekend before the bad weather hits. Looks like snow and ice is on the way.

Kid Rock

Is baying everything he can catch in the snow. Cats, people, everything. He is really a big good looking dog. Loves everybody and gets along great with every dog he meets. Only trouble he got into is he chewed my brothers cell phone. Wants to hunt all the time and has to be chained now. He watches the deer cross just about daily by my brothers and doesnt attempt to chase them even when not chained. (when someone is outside with him)My question is where were these deer while I was hunting for them??LOL According to map quest its 996 miles from here to Nashville Arkansas. Does that sound about right? Im not bringing a pop-up and will stay in a hotel instead. It will be better gas mileage for sure. Take care and will see you in March.

Bad Weather

Well I've spend the last several days preparing for bad weather and it looks like I didn't work in vain. We've had a lot of sleat and snow for down here. I got fence built, horses moved, water heaters set-up for the goats and horses, along with getting in a little hunting before all this. Kitty was out fri. and sat. night and didn't take but a little bit to get treed, with the meat. Most were lay-ups or cold trails. I'm starting to really get her figured out. To those who have called I'll be getting to you soon now that everything is straightened out here and ready for the storm.

5 Gen. PED for Fireball

I'm working on getting together a full 7 Gen. PED for these Twister pups but figured I'd put this on here. What's interesting to me is all of the backyard breeding that was going on with these hounds. You can definately tell that people didn't travel near as much back then. I'm sure glad they bred up these coonhounds though becuase other wise we wouldn't have had Fireball.

Good Night...

Well I haven't been a handler in a competition hunt in for 10 years, between Iraq and college but...... Took Music/Kitty to the show yesterday and won the show with her and then turned her loose for a trial run in a hunt for me and her last night. Came home with that one too. Kitty had no points in UKC until yesterday now she has 35 from the show and just in case some might have thought I was blowin smoke about her treeing coons she picked up a 3rd. last night and has 30 points toward NtCh now. Needless to say, I had a good time and we had a good cast too. Was back at the clubhouse by 10:30.
