Hunt

Well just rolled in from hunting. We have been having some rough hunts. Seem to strike bad tracks every turnout. First drop tonight we cut rickett, Charlie and Cotton. Rickett came back by trucks and Charlie came by as well. I took Charlie down the bottom and recut him. In the meantime I check garmin and cotton is 525 yds up bottom. Charlie strikes and is joined by rickett. They work track down bottom but get close to house. I drive down and catch them up. I check garmin before I go to get them and Cotton is 8/10ths of a mile up bottom and I hear her trailing. I drive around and she is blowing the top out and has a coon all alone. Next drop turn dolly, Charlie and Cotton. They strike seperate and Dolly is alone. They work tracks for long time and Dolly gives up and comes in. Cotton pushed an old bad track across a huge slough and finally loads up followed by Charlie. They are treed on a willow tree surrounded by blackberries. Coon is not home. That is the first slick tree that I have seen cotton make. Called it a night and gone get some rest. Hope everyone has a great 4th. Darren

If she's not Logan all over again I don't know what is. He will go work those old bad tracks into something on the toughest nights. Don't be too hard on her on the second tree most likely kits and the dogs have been having a tough time on them up here anyway. She will only get better with age. There are ALOT of old dogs that would not have that staying power on a tough track. Have a safe 4th,

Scott thanks for the comments. I am like you buddy , I have been hunting with some older titled dogs that ain't doin too good right now either. I love the fact that Cotton has alot of heart and drive. The other dogs can sit at the truck or whatever and she just leaves out and does her thing. I am really proud of her. Y'all keepem lookin up. Hunt

Had a man come go hunting with Charlie tonight. It was pouring down rain and Charlie made a liar outa me. Turned him loose alone in hills and he didn't hunt. Loaded him up and moved to bottom. He didn't hunt well there either. Rain had him messed up. Got Cotton out and turned her loose. She left in a dead run and Charlie went with her. Cotton struck about 175 yds in bottom and worked a good track along with Charlie. They got in alot of water and track got rough. Charlie gave up and came in but Cotton kept drifting and hammering out the track. She got it out of that water and loaded up. Charlie backed her and we seen coon. Turned Charlie and mans dog loose. Charlie struck and mans dog smokey put in with him. They moved track good in hills but ended up in ground. Soaking wet and called it a night. Man these dogs can make you look like an idiot!!! Hunt

Turned them loose for awhile last night. Took BB and my buddy took Dolly. Dolly hasn't looked too good since they bought her from me. Change in owners has really blown her mind. She finally acted better last night. BB has had her own set of problems. She wont hunt because I had to get really rough on her for Dillars. I have had to be patient with her and handle her with kids gloves. First drop neither dog wanted to go hunting. We leashed them up and walked them further in bottom and recut. Both left out hard and soon struck and old bad track at about 175 yds. It was a terrible track but they kept hammering on him. They pushed him pretty good til he hit the hills and things really slowed down. Not much timber in there, mostly cutover. Dogs got about 750 yds from us and we decided to drive around. We got pretty close to dogs and BB came out to us. We finally got close to Dolly and she came to truck as well. Not a good night. Got home at 12:30 and didn't make a tree. I hate this time of the year. Be glad when blackberries are gone and we can hunt cornfields. Maybe we can actually get after a track worth a crap. I have turned loose in bottoms, hills, cutover, and a mixture of both and just cant get anything going.Treeing a few coons but it aint pretty and dogs really having to struggle to get them treed. OH well just gone stay after them, I figure when them coons start stirring better these old potlickers will be in shape and ready to get after them!! Yall Keep'em Lookin Up. Darren

Odd hours

Darrin,
I've seen coon crossing these county roads anywhere from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm (1 1/2 hours before dark here). Been getting on some rough tracks "at" dark. Kits are out, and going up and down trees and saplings. Makes it rough on young hounds. You ain't the only person having some less than desirable hunts. It'll get better.

Hunts

Lowell I have seen the same thing here. It is 75 to 80 degrees here at night. Miserable on dogs and hunters. I turned loose last night in cutover on purpose and got after one of them old sorry tracks. Cotton seems to be the only thing I got here that can get me one treed but she ain't lookin pretty doing it. She has struggled with some tracks. Just gone keep after them. Darren.

Took Cotton out last night. On the way to the turnout she was winding a coon but didn't want to cut her there. Led her on down thru field but the sneaky helfer slipped back around and struck coon. Worked him thru a big overgrown field and got treed. Couldn't find him as he was in a tangled overgrown mess. Raining and lightning in distance. Called it a night and got home at 10:45. Cotton

Made a couple drops tonight. First drop turned Cotton, Rickett, and Dolly loose. Ricket struck followed by Cotton and Dolly . They really got track moving and drove him about 750 yds in bottom. Cotton loaded up and the other two followed. Large coon seen. Turned Cotton alone down edge of old Powerline. She struck about 80 yds in and started drifting a cold track. She moved it good and came treed about 360 yds in hills. We got there and she was on big den. It had split in it and had a sow and 3 kittens. I got a pic and thought it was pretty cool. Gone try my luck in Tuscaloosa tomorrow night and hopefully get it done. Y'all keepem lookin up. Darren.
