Steve & I took a short hunt tonight. Deer season opens tomorrow. Luke, Bonnie & Maggie did their share of getting coon treed. 4 trees with coon and headed home at 9. Hope to remove a nice buck from the gene pool early in the morning.

No bright moon and decent temperatures have made for a few nice nights of coon treeing. My grandson, Peyton spent the weekend with grampa. The boy truly loves to eat & coonhunt. We hunted with Ed Green Friday night. We did manage to tree a couple coon before strong storms moved in. We saw several decent bucks Saturday morning but not the one I've been looking for. Saturday night one of the other grandsons had a basketball tournament we attended. Peyton had a coon hunt on his mind before we had left for the ball game and I had told him we'd go hunting. At 10 PM we headed out. We treed two trees with coon and caught one in a pond.

Sunday night Matt was over for a hunt. Luke caught one in the creek on the first drop. Next turn Moe went over .75 miles and got treed with a coon, Bonnie covered. Next drop a den tree. Next drop Luke, Moe & Bonnie treed a coon in a large oak. All 3 went over a 1000 yds and was treed while driving around. Matt had his pup and he got fired up when we squalled the coon out. Next drop 800 yds and got treed on a coon.

Tonight Tim was over for a hunt. We had a good runner in standing corn. They ran a good track several hundred yds and Tim's pup was opening good. We did see a coon a couple trees over and the coon could have crossed. We had already sent the hounds on. Luke ended up 3/4 of a mile treed on a coon. Chief about the same but different direction on a building. Luke treed one on the next drop. We sent on where Chief treed one. We ended up treeing 6 trees with coon.

Phil and I hunted until about 10 PM and he headed back to Arkansas. We had six trees with coon, a couple split trees with coon and Luke got a couple alone. A den and the gyps treed a couple slick trees. Phil had a young gyp that looked good on a couple split trees.

Met Steve for a hunt. He had Maggie and anouther male pup out of Shack. I hunted Luke & my Reb pup. First drop they went up the creek a half mile and took a fence row into a oak flat woods. They had went nearly 1.25 miles and treed a coon. Next drop 490 yds and treed a coon. Next drop Maggie blew up treed at 770 yds, Luke went on, no coon seen. Next drop they went well over 1.5 miles to get one treed. Next drop they struck a good track at 75 yds and treed at 350 with a coon. Last drop they got treed at 485 yds with a coon. Both pups open on a couple of the tracks and treed a little. Steve and I enjoyed a good night of hunting. The hounds certainly seemed to have coon treeing on their minds.

Had a couple fellas meeting at the house to show and try a young dog. That deal took until 9 and we did tree a coon. Those fellas had a good drive and headed home. Jim Combs and I went on hunting. Jim had Jack & I took Luke & Bonnie. Short version is we treed six trees with coon & Luke & Jack caught one. Bonnie had her own on the ground but it got up a tree. Bonnie went through the section on the last turn out. We were driving around to get her when a big coon ran across the road with Bonnie 10 feet behind it. The hunt didnt start good but ended good.

Tim was over for a hunt. Luke & Kate was the coon catchers and John & sister Ann were the pups. Coon weren't moving very good. First drop over 800 yds to strike and a couple hundred to tree. The pups jumped right in on the fight. Next drop .62 miles to strike and caught it in the creek. The coon was up under some roots along the bank. Big John made the trip and was helping out. The hounds were there for at least 30 minutes before we could get to them. They did pull the coon out after we arrived. Sent a couple times and no bark. Kate got deep on the third coon we treed. Last drop deep and not a bark.

Met Steve for a hunt. Steve had Maggie & Rosco. Roscoe is out of Cheyenne Shack dog also. I hunted Luke & Bonnie. First dump they treed quick at 160 yds in a den tree. We sent on where they treed anouther den at .65 miles. Next drop they split up where Luke went 650 yds and worked back toward us and treed a coon at 420 yds. We sent on where Maggie and Luke ran a good track and treed at .75 miles. They had a big boar. Next drop Maggie was sent alone. She struck around 500 yds. and treed around 600 yds with the coon. Sent Bonnie where she worked a track a couple hundred yds and treed a slick persimmon. Coon 20 ft away up an oak. Next drop over a mile no bark. Last drop treed quick at 540 yds with anouther big boar. Good dog work by the Walker gyp. She can make it happen fast.

Hunted last night with Phil Davis. It was a little tough getting struck. We did manage to tree a couple. Tim was over tonight. We had a tough time getting after a decent track early. We had 4 litter mates that are nice hounds. Treed 5 trees with coon.

Steve & I hunted Maggie, Luke & two pups. The pups have figured out the going hunting part. We treed 4 trees with coon & caught two on the ground. Maggie had one tree to her self & Luke had one alone. Roscoe pup sure can smoke a deer. I had to ask Maggie not to help on the deer a couple times.

Jim Combs was up for a hunt. He brought Jack, I took Luke & Bonnie. We made a couple den trees, a couple dirt beaver dens & two trees with a coon. The hounds had to go around 4 miles of big creek to get that done. Over all it was a pretty tough night to look at coon.

Well it was tough to get struck early. Tim was over with Kate & John Brown. I took Luke & Bonnie. The x son n law and Chris with his two sons went along. First turn a mile and a half up a big creek with big timber before striking. Ran one hard for a quarter mile to a beaver den. They struck quick away from the hole. Ran it nearly 600 yds to a den tree. Coon was in a hole at the bottom growling at the hounds. Next drop struck and treed at 320 yds, den tree. Next deal went over a mile through a section, no bark. Next drop struck quick, treed a coon at 230 yds. Next drop over 800 yds Bonnie was alone on a big viney mess and I never saw a coon. Tim and I treed 3 after the crowd left.

Made 2 trees with coon a couple den trees and two or three dirt holes. After 11 we made 4 trees with coon. Had a good time on a cold moonlight night.

Family Christmas deal tonight, same tomorrow night, headed pheasant hunting with Cory Mailes and Monty early Thursday. Steve Nading is going with us this year. The hounds need a little break. A few coon fights every night and lots of water takes the edge off a hound.

Merry Christmas to everyone and God Bless.

Steve and I watched football then hunted. Maggie did a bang up job on a couple trees. We ended up treeing 5 trees with coon. The frost was heavy and the temperature around 20. That's cold for old men.

Scott, as much as we enjoy hunting it's not fun if your hurting the entire hunt. My shoulder was hurting last year. Surgery has helped and feeling better.

Steve and I hunted tonight. First turnout Bonnie & Maggie struck at 430 yds, Luke had split off around 250 yds. May have been two coon but Luke went past where the gyps struck and they come back our direction and treed a den tree. Luke went 75 yds and treed a coon. Next dump they all struck at 350 yds and the gyps blow up treed, Luke covers, coon was put out to them. Next drop Roscoe, Steve's Walker pup exercised speed beef. We gathered the others crossing the road. Next turnout Bonnie & Luke went 3/4 mile and tree a coon. Next drop Maggie gets treed first at 250 yds with a coon. Next drop they take a good track 650 yds where Bonnie & Maggie get treed. Luke goes on but comes to the tree after we arrive. We had shined the tree not seeing a coon. So I ask him to leave. Then we sent the gyps on. As we were leaving one last look and there it was. Next drop a good track went over a half mile. Luke got away from the gyps treed a big den. Glad he handles good. He was across big water and he came to me. Next drop the gyps get treed at 430 yds with a coon. Last drop Maggie blows up treed on a big den.

Richard Bebee was over to hunt. Richard didnt have a hound so I took my two Irene pups & Luke. The gyp isnt going but the male goes with Luke. First turn they went 800 yds and treed a coon. Next drop 325 yds same ending. Next drop over a mile, same result. I hardly ever put a lead on Luke so he walks along in front on the way out. I saw him throw his head in the air and go right handed. Looked over at a tree 50 yds away and there set a coon. It took a few seconds before he said here's anouther one dad. Last drop he went over a 1000 yds and treed a double. Five trees with coon, 23 degrees with heavy frost is enough on January 2nd. Sure enjoyed getting to visit with Richard about hounds.
