Doll IV, Doll V, and Smoke

Chris, myself, and the kids hunted another river swamp Friday night. They cut the dogs along an old lake. They got in about 225 yards and Doll IV opened 1st and the other 2 shortly after. This track was very cold and took a little time to get heated up. They worked this track up into the hills and made a loop back down toward the swamps. At one point the pup came back to make sure we hadn't gone anywhere and got back in the race. At this point they were getting close and all 3 sounded real good working this track. This coon ran 1325 yards when Doll IV treed, Doll v 2nd and Smoke just behind them. They walked in to a huge dead hollow oak and shined a while but couldn't get him out. We were late getting started, kids were tired, and this track took a while so we called it a night.

Great to be able to get out of the house

Man, what a week. I started comming down with something Sat. night at the UKC Winter Classic. I don't know what it was, but it steadily got worse. I went to the Dr. Monday morning. He said it was not the flu, but he gave me a shot and pills for what ever it was. I never got out of the house until the following sunday other than feeding the dogs. Thanks to Chris and Clayton for keeping ole Tramp limbered up for me. I took ole Tramp out for a short run tonight. Turned him up an old slough down next to the river. He went in about 250 yrds and struck an old cold track worked it in another 200yrds and treed. Made my way in to him and he was treed up a large oak. I shined for a while, but never could make him look. I walked back to the 4-wheeler and loaded Tramp up and went around next to the river. Turned Tramp loose up river headed west. He went in about 800 yrds and struck an ole cold track. About an hour later and over 800 yrds deeper he treed in one of the worst cutover/briar patches that we have around here. I went around and got as close as I could to him, but he was still about 150 yrds out in the cutover. If I would have had good sense I would have just called him in, but I always did hate for one of my dogs to do their job and me not do mine, and I can tell you now that that frame of mind has got me into some bad places through the years. anyway, I got my rifle and sling blade off the 4-wheeler and started toward him, having to cut briars and bushes all the way in. I figured maybe when I got into the tree it would be a little cleaner around the tree. It wasnt it just got worse. I had to cut briars ffrom above my head just to look up into the tree. It was a pretty big tree at the bottom, but it was only about 20' tall. It was some kind of evergreen tree, but it was so wrapped up with vines and briars that I couldnt really tell what kind of tree it was. I could see a big hole at the bottom and I could see that if I was going to look from any other position I was going to have to do a lot more cutting, so I just petted ole Tramp on the head and told him we would get him another night when we had Clayton and Chris along, so we came back out to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Sheba & Doll V

Chris, Cole, and myself decided to hunt some different locations. They cut the dogs beside an old pond in a block of hard woods. The dogs hunted out good covering the area but never opened. We got fairly close and they caught the dogs.
2nd drop
They cut the dogs in an old branch bed that was full of water. They didn't go far when Doll opened with Sheba close behind her. They worked the track in that water a few min before getting him straightened out. They pushed the coon about 550 yards and got into some bad cutover. The dogs were close together when they treed up a medium size oak. We got about 100 yards from them and they fought their way to the dogs. We had told Cole he could shoot a coon but this was a smaller coon and Chris chose to leave it thinking it may be a sow.
3rd drop
They put the dogs in a good patch of mix pine and hardwood. The dog were about 475 yards and hunting around an old lake. Sheba opened 1st with Doll a few seconds later. They were pushing the coon toward a county road so we moved around to get closer. We got closer and sit back listening to a good race. They went across 300 yards of fairly rough cutover and came to the county road. No traffic was out so we let the dogs continue. They crossed the road pushing the coon another 170 yards and treed him a small patch of timber on the edge of the cutover. We got within 50 yards and they walked in to a medium size water oak in a wet spot. We have ran this coon several times and the last few he ran straight for the highway with us having to catch the dogs. Me and Chris agreed that if seen allow Cole his chance before this coon got a dog ran over. He was tuff to see as this water oak still had lots of leaves but they found him in the top. I was even able to see him from the buggy and he was fair sized for our area. Cole shot about 4 time and wouldn't you guess we were out of bullets. We weren't far from my home and I wanted this ol boy gone so we ran home and got more bullets. When we got back it appeared he was gone. The dogs were still straight up so I knew he hadn't jumped out and after about 10 min they spotted a little hair in a fork way down the tree. Cole made his shot count this time killing his 5th coon over the dogs. They petted the dogs up good and we called it a night.

Mr Jack glad you are feeling better, we've been missing you on here. That cut over sounds like a few places I hunt around where you have to cut your way in to the tree sometimes. I don't hardly see how a hound can get around in that stuff as well as they do. Good hunting buddy.

Mr. Heard

Thank you for your well wishes and yes that was a bad place I was in the other night. I've got to go back to the dr. tomorrow and hopefully after that ai'll be ready to go. I sure enjoyed meeting you again at the Winter Classic and talking to you and your friend. He seemed like a real nice guy. I'm glad you like this thread, I've always enjoyed writing and this gives me an outlet to do so. Mr. Heard take care and tell your friend I said hello, and keep me posted on how things are going with you.

Shane, I don't have anything bred to Tramp 11 at this time. Probably within the next couple of months we will get a couple of good females bred to him. Thank you for inquiring about him. Good Huntin-----Jack

Tramp 11

Took Tramp out for a run last night. First drop, turned him up the swamp. He went in about 450 yrds and struck a cold track. The coon made a wide circle and crossed the pipeline about 500 yrds above me and Tramp treed about 50 yrds from the pipeline. I walked in to him and he was treed up a leaning oak tree, that went strait up about 20' and the rest of the tree had a hard lean to it. I figured it had gotten this way from the furious winds of
Huricane Katrina. I shined the tree for a few minutes and found the coon hugged up to the tree up near the top. I let him have this one. It was a large boar coon. Tramp toted the coon back to the 4-wheeler as he usually does. We loaded up and moved on up a ways and cut tramp loose back into the swamp. He went in a couple hundred yrds and struck real cold track. I've never seen him take many tracks that he just failed to do anything with, but this was one of them. He finally treed and I walked in to him. he was treed up a medium sized water oak. I shined, but there was nothing there. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on up and turned Tramp down and ole woods road. He went in about 250 yrds and struck a hot track, moved it on in another 100 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and found the coon pretty quick, and decided to give him this one also. It was a real large oak tree that he was treed up with water all around it. Tramp was on the other side of the tree and making so much racket that he never heard the coon hit the water. He looked around the tree when he heard me start wadding out in the water. He saw me when I got the coon and threw it up on the bank. He got hold of it then. I hated that I shot this one for it was a large sow coon. Tramp carried her to the 4-wheeler and called it a nite.

Gin

After Tramp and I got back to the house, I decided to take Gin out for a short run. I took her over in front of the house and turned her south down the swamp. She went in about 300 yrds and struck an old feed track. She moved it out pretty quick and I had to go around on another road to get closer. She was still about 600 yrds further in so I started moving on down the swamp to get closer to her. The next time I stopped to listen she was treed. I went as far as I could on the 4-wheeler and I was still about 300 yrds from her. She was in a place that we call dry creek. The creek isnt very wide and has steep banks in places. When I got to within about 200 yrds of her she had quit treeing. I got my Garmin out and it said she was there in one spot and wasn't moving. I made my way on in to her, it was pretty rough in there. After I got to her and saw the predikament (is that a word) that she was in I couldnt help but smile. The coon had crossed the creek from one bank to another on a small tree that had fell across from one bank to the other, it was about a fifteen foot drop to the bottom of the creek, and when Gin started across the limb the coon had crossed on was about the size of your wrist and Gin wasnt quite as sure footed as the coon so I guess her feet had slipped out from under her and when I saw her she was lying there on that limb. She looked like a lot of coons that i had mounted lying there on that limb. When I walked up on that bank and saw her she looked up at me as if to say (come get me out of here) I went down on the main part of the tree and worked my way op close enough behind her till I could get my leash 0n her. I dropped the other end down toward the groung. I sure was glad the creek was not flowing deep like it is when we have a lot of rain. I went back to the bank and went down into the creek which was only about knee deep. I got under her and pulled on the leash and she came on out and I caught her, as soon as her feet hit the ground she started pulling wanting to go the way the coon had gone, but I told her it was getting late and we would get him another night, so we made our way back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Gin

Thats a good story Mr. Smith. Gin has some more brothers and sisters. Hammerhead had a nice litter last night. I stopped by at noon today and they all looked to be doing good. Hammerhead is a nice mother.
Take Care,
Scott

Congratulations Chris and Sheba

Chris and I and his son Cole traveled to Meadville, Ms. last night to their Regional Qualifing Event. Chris and Sheba won their cast and 5th place in the hunt, Qualifying Sheba for the World Hunt. I just rode along with them for support and they both did their job well. This was their 4th win in a row. They got three Nite Champion wins in three weekends to finish her to Dual Grand and now on the 4th weekend they qualified for the World Hunt. Not bad. These two are making a good team.

Cold Weather

Its too cold for me here in Mississippi. I can just imagine how it is on you guys up in the northern states. I still havent completely got over what ever I picked up at the Winter Classic. Whatever it is just keeps hanging on. I did get to go over and hunt with my friend Steve Bankston last friday night. We sure had a good hunt. Bo and Tramp work well togeather, we are always listening to see which one is going to get the strike or tree, and its all in fun. Really injoyed our hunt Steve looking forward to the next one.

Gin

Took Gin out for a short run tonight, The coons were just not moving. She hunted good, but never opened except for the last turn out. She went in about 200 yrds and struck a real cold track, Moved it in another 200 yrds and treed. I got the rifle and went in to her. She was treed up an Iron wood tree that went up into a den tree. The temperature was dropping so with the coons not moving, we decided to call it quits for tonight

Cold Spell?

I hope you get to feeling better Mr. Smith. It is cold here too. Today the high was 6 and it is supposed to be -12 tonight. Tomorrow 3 for a high and -17 tomorrow night. I have the pups in the old milk house in the barn and keeping them warm. I went to check on them at noon and the heat lamp bulb burned out when I was there. Now that is luck. I put a new one in that I had extra and good to go. You fellows down in Mississippi stay warm.

Take Care,
Scott

Cold Spell

My gosh Scott, I don't see how you boys stand it up there. If it gets down in the mid twentys here I might as well stay home, because I like to enjoy my hunts and I cant when its that cold. Scott, you and the rest of the guys up there where you are having all that cold and snow, be careful out there. In those kind of elements it wouldnt take much for a fellow to get in a lot of trouble out there. Take care.

Congratulations Jeremy and Shadow

Jeremy and Chris took Shadow and Gin and traveled to Hattisburg, Ms. last night to their UKC hunt. Chris and Gin didnt win, but Chris said he was well satisfied with what she did. Jeremy and Shadow won Nite Champion. This was Shadow's 2nd Nite Ch. win. I think Shadow has 3 champion wins on the bench. Jeremy, you and Shadow keep that up and it won't be long till we have us another Dual Grand.

Wins!

Congratulations! Sounds like some good dogs and handlers getting it done. Good luck in the future. The Tramp bred dogs are still making their mark on the coon hound world.
