02-12-13 hunt
Went hunting with my good friend John and his young dog Sonic. I took Zeus and a pup. Zeus hasn't been out for a while due to a bad cut that needed to heal. First drop Sonic slams a tree with Zeus right there also. They have 2 coon. Next drop Sonic gets stuck in at 600yds to the south. Zeus opens 200 yrds to the west. I catch Zeus on the road. Sonic moves cross country and trees a half mile behind us. We drive and get within 450 yrds of him. I leave Zeus in the truck and we head into check Sonic's tree. Sonic has the coon. We decide to recast from there and hunt this little section out. I have guided many casts in this section. I was telling John about a Walker Dog that was hunting in a major hunt years ago that I was guiding in this section. Leaves were on then and I told John how this dog made 12 trees and scored on 1 coon, no dens and had no minus and advanced. Any way we recast Sonic he hits what sounds to me to be a bad track. Sonic comes treed. Sonic is treed on a large split trunk Cottonwood tree. We shine and can't find a coon. We send him on. Sonic falls tree a couple hundred yrds deeper, he has the coon. We head to the truck and to a new hunting spot. I turn Zeus out alone, He makes a short loop and is on the road. I catch him off the road and get him recasted in the right direction. Zeus ends up treed 700 yds from where I cut him. We are able to drive within 430 yrds of him. 400 yrds one way of walking across a soft muddy field. I get to Zeus he is treed on a Large oak den. I find the coon setting with his face right at the hole and moving around in there. I let Zeus know he did a good job and we headed back to the truck. We move to another spot to turn Zeus loose again by himself. The new spot has deer right where I want to send him. Zeus has never messed with fast game and has been what I call for the most part naturally straight. So,I cut Zeus right in there amongst them, he quickly opens on a tree and them moves on in 80 yrds deeper and comes down hard on a tree. We go in and check him he has the coon. It is a yellow belly boar coon. We made 6 trees seeing coons in 5 of them, with 3 of the 5 coons treed after midnight. I thought Zeus look good considering he has been laid up and not hunted very hard at all this season. Sonic looked good as usual. There is only 2 more nights of season here. I have not hunted like I should have this season and I have all kinds of excuses why not. Bottom line is I let my dogs down this year by not hunting them like I should have and I feel bad about that. However, The times I was able to go I enjoyed good friendship, good hound work, coon hunting stories, fresh air and it was all done from the tailgate.
Below are a couple pictures of last nights hunt.
