1-05-13 hunt with John and Sonic

Went hunting last night with my friend John Bishop. John took his young dog Sonic and had a young female that is a sister to Sonic but from a younger cross. I didn't take anything of my own, but helped handle the little female. I haven't been with Sonic in awhile and I always enjoy hunting with him, so we went for a hunt. We still have snow covering the ground, but it warmed up some and the snow was softer and mushier. First drop, Sonic strikes in and takes the track back behind us and across the road in some stiff cut-over. Sonic trees he is almost 700 yrds in and we head to him. It is a den tree with a hole in the bottom. We lead out and move. Next drop, Sonic strikes in at 600 yrds and moves the track towards the creek and them back towards us some. Sonic locates and trees he is 530 yrds and right on the creek bank. We get to the tree and shine. At this point we can't find a coon so John gets down in the creek bed and shines around, and I stay on top trying to find a hole. John finds a hole on the backside. Then John hollers "I found him". Sure enough there he was sitting out on a limb right in front of me. I can't figure out how I missed seeing him. Whats bad is not only we almost missed seeing that coon but the other 2 in the tree also, yep a triple. We let Sonic know he did a good job and moved on to our next spot. We get to the new spot and cut them loose. Sonic falls treed and we head to him, it is a den. We lead off and cut him loose again. Sonic opens on what seems to me to be an old bad track at 500 yrds. Sonic trees at over 1000yrds in. We are able to drive within 150 yds of him. We shine his tree it is another den. We decided to call it a night and head for the house. The little female did a very good job all night for it being her first night in the woods, she went every step of the way with Sonic and stayed off on her own some too. She also barked up some. She is an action packed little ball of fire, but she handles real well for not really ever being handled and acts likes she got a lot of smarts to her. Her only problem right now is she doesn't have a name yet. We didn't tree a truck load of coon last night, but we seen some good dog work, enjoyed each others company and just had a very nice good old fashion pleasure hunt. The only part of last night that wasn't a pleasure was when we were walking to Sonic's 3rd tree of the night. We were walking across a snow covered field and went to cross a low spot and I fell through the snow in a drifted over washout up past my waist. John was trying to get situated to help me out then he ends ups falling in with half his body in there and the other half twisted up on high ground. It was a heck of a site to see us both stuck out in the middle of bean field buried up to our waists in snow. We finally got out of it, but we had to stop and think about it first. I told John that would have made for a good picture.

1-18-13 hunt

I haven't been hunting much lately. It's been hard between being sick for a week and adjusting to a new work schedule to go hunting. However, Me and my brother went out for a hunt last night. Brother took his Black female(Raven) and I took Hardware and a young one named Joe. Joe really didn't do much, but did go hunting some, chewed on a coon and was checking some trees on his own on our way out of the timber. First drop, Raven and Hardware get struck on a hot coon. It's not long and they are treed. We head to them. As we get there we can see the tree they are treed on is a leaner that goes out over the creek and into the top of a big oak and there sits the coon. We let them know they did a good job and move. Next drop, Hardware and Raven get stuck and in short order they are treed. We see the coon in the tree as we get to them. Once again we let them know they did a good job. We lead out and headed for the house. May try and go again tonight if the wind isn't too bad. Picture of the 1st tree last night is posted below.

RAVEN AND HARDWARE TREED WITH THE COON, NOT MUCH ROOM ON THE TREE, IT IS RIGHT ON THE CREEK BANK. RAVEN AND HARDWARE SHARED THE WOOD TIME.

1-19-13 hunt

My brother and I went out again last night. A friend of ours, Jeremy came along for the ride. I hunted Zeus and brother took Raven. Zeus split on a den tree by himself, Raven and Zeus together had a coon, then Zeus split again and had 2 coons up a tree by himself and Raven treed herself with a coon. Then we met up with John Bishop and Avery and hunted some more. We all got a part of a slick, then Raven, Sonic and Zeus on a den. I sent Zeus on. They found the coon in the den. Then Sonic and Zeus get treed with 3 coon up their tree. Brother catches Raven off of track as she was headed to the road and private property. Zeus ended up with a nasty cut on his front leg and a toe nail torn off. There was a lot of old tin sheets laying around the last tree he made. So, I kept Zeus in the truck on the last drop. Raven and Sonic get in deep and get treed. they are split, 60 yrds apart. Brother finds Raven's coon and Sonic's tree is a den. We only shot one out and left the rest we treed to run another day. We seen something like 12 coon last night. We had a pretty good hunt all in all. Below are a couple pics from last nights hunt.

It was a good night, except for Zeus cutting his front leg. It was a deep cut and needed a trip to the Vet to stitch him up. The 12 coon was a total of coon seen, we seen a triple and a couple doubles some singles and a few we didn't tree that we seen sitting up and looking out dens. It was good to see the coon population is still strong. There was some nights in December, I wasn't so sure we had many coons left.

02-12-13 hunt

Went hunting with my good friend John and his young dog Sonic. I took Zeus and a pup. Zeus hasn't been out for a while due to a bad cut that needed to heal. First drop Sonic slams a tree with Zeus right there also. They have 2 coon. Next drop Sonic gets stuck in at 600yds to the south. Zeus opens 200 yrds to the west. I catch Zeus on the road. Sonic moves cross country and trees a half mile behind us. We drive and get within 450 yrds of him. I leave Zeus in the truck and we head into check Sonic's tree. Sonic has the coon. We decide to recast from there and hunt this little section out. I have guided many casts in this section. I was telling John about a Walker Dog that was hunting in a major hunt years ago that I was guiding in this section. Leaves were on then and I told John how this dog made 12 trees and scored on 1 coon, no dens and had no minus and advanced. Any way we recast Sonic he hits what sounds to me to be a bad track. Sonic comes treed. Sonic is treed on a large split trunk Cottonwood tree. We shine and can't find a coon. We send him on. Sonic falls tree a couple hundred yrds deeper, he has the coon. We head to the truck and to a new hunting spot. I turn Zeus out alone, He makes a short loop and is on the road. I catch him off the road and get him recasted in the right direction. Zeus ends up treed 700 yds from where I cut him. We are able to drive within 430 yrds of him. 400 yrds one way of walking across a soft muddy field. I get to Zeus he is treed on a Large oak den. I find the coon setting with his face right at the hole and moving around in there. I let Zeus know he did a good job and we headed back to the truck. We move to another spot to turn Zeus loose again by himself. The new spot has deer right where I want to send him. Zeus has never messed with fast game and has been what I call for the most part naturally straight. So,I cut Zeus right in there amongst them, he quickly opens on a tree and them moves on in 80 yrds deeper and comes down hard on a tree. We go in and check him he has the coon. It is a yellow belly boar coon. We made 6 trees seeing coons in 5 of them, with 3 of the 5 coons treed after midnight. I thought Zeus look good considering he has been laid up and not hunted very hard at all this season. Sonic looked good as usual. There is only 2 more nights of season here. I have not hunted like I should have this season and I have all kinds of excuses why not. Bottom line is I let my dogs down this year by not hunting them like I should have and I feel bad about that. However, The times I was able to go I enjoyed good friendship, good hound work, coon hunting stories, fresh air and it was all done from the tailgate.

Below are a couple pictures of last nights hunt.

Thanks for the kind replies John and Scott. Our season went out on the 15th. Our running season is now closed and won't be opened back up until the 26th. So, I won't have many hunts to post for a while unless I go to a competition hunt or go out of state hunting. I hope all is well with you and your hounds. Best of luck to you fellas Good hunting to ya. Take care, Chris

The last night of season 02/15/13

I have not got around to putting my last night of season hunt on here yet. Probably because it wasn't that great of a night. I took Zeus and a pup. Zeus had 2 long cold tracks that ended in big trees, but I couldn't find the coon in one and the other was a den. Zeus also made 2 more trees that night. One was a small den and the other was a big tree that was also a den.. It was a tough night here for me and Zeus. I did see anything out stirring as I was driving like I usually do. I didn't do near as much hunting this year as I should have. Kind of turned into a fair weather hunter this year. Below are a couple pics of my last night of season.

Work has slowed and I have been able to hunt some. I have been hunting a young male named Joe. Joe is out of Harpeth River Blue Jack X McGinnis' Blue Thunder. I just got back from a very enjoyable trip to Alabama and Tennessee. I first stopped off at the AL/TN line and visited with Mr. Jim Cooper. Mr. Cooper has been a Bluetick Breeder and Fancier since the 60's. Jim shared with me some of his Bluetick History. I am very glad he did. It was very interesting to see and hear his stories of past hounds and hunts. Years ago Mr. Cooper bred some of his fine hounds to Harpeth River Blue Joe. This would have been in the early to mid 80's I believe. Mr. Howard Ford the man who owned Harpeth River Blue Joe told me Mr. Cooper had some of the best and hardest treeing Bluetick females that was ever bred to old Joe. Howard spoke very highly of Mr. Cooper and I can see why after meeting the man in person myself. While I was visiting with Jim, Jim took the time to show me his hounds. I was also able to see Jim work his hounds in the swim pond. I would say water racing hounds is a passion of Mr. Coopers. Mr. Jim Cooper still has fine hounds today with some still tracing back to the hounds he owned and enjoyed years ago. Jim, if you read this I would like to thank you again for the hospitality, history, sweet tea and pecan pie. I truly enjoyed the visit and hope we can get together again.

After I left Mr. Coopers I went on down into Alabama and visited with my good friends Mike and Kim Dunn their family, I also got to visit with friend Matt White and a friend of Mike's named Logan. I had a very good time there also even though we had to haul hay part of the day, We later got to drive around and I was able to see some of the Harpeth River Blue Jack pups that are around those parts. Mike had a couple coons and we got to work a few pups. Got to enjoy some outstanding food. Mike's wife Kim is a excellent cook. I had to leave or she would have made a fat man out of me, . I had a very good time, but it was time to head back north I had a couple pups I needed to drop off.

Once I left Mike's I headed on down to Mr. Howard Ford's place in TN. Howard has been a close friend of mine for nearly 30 years. We went over some more Bluetick History, photo's, dog papers and stories of past hounds and hunts. I also got to visit with Mr. Bob Garner. Howard and Bob have been up and hunted here with me several times in the years past. We spoke of doing that again here in the future. I am looking forward to it. Mr. Bob is a Walker dog man and has had many good hounds on the end of his lead. Once again time was sneaking up on me and I needed to head north again.

As I headed north, I drove through a couple heavy storms. I finally made it to Mr. John Steber's place in Olney, IL. We had a short enjoyable visit talking hounds. We finished up some dog paper work. We negotiated a deal on a bacon cheeseburger and a homemade desert .John is a heck of a good guy that I always enjoy talking with and always makes me laugh. John, keep in touch. I left John's and made it back home to the family.

Below are a few pics I took during the weekend. Enjoy.

Harold, Dixie looks good. Those collars make her neck look big. Looks like your doing a fine job with her. Maybe we will need to talk about A.O. this year if she keeps progressing. Take care and keep me posted.

HAROLD - DIXIE LOOKS GOOD
JOHN - THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS
JASON - WOULD HAVE LIKED TO MEET YOU ALSO, MAYBE WE CAN GET TOGETHER NEXT TIME.
DONNY - I WOULD ENJOY GETTING TOGETHER FOR A HUNT IN THE FALL, MAYBE WE CAN TALK KENNY INTO GOING WITH US.
BEN - I MAY TRY AND GET A CLIP OF HIM ONE OF THESE DAYS.

I haven't had Zeus in the woods for awhile. I decided to take him out with my Joe pup. Zeus was definitely out of shape physically, but was still able to get a coon treed quick. The Joe pup was off doing his own thing, but later came in by the tree.I found the coon just as I got to the tree. I let Zeus know he did a good job and we headed out to the truck. I was headed to my second hunting spot when the rain hit. It hit a couple hours before it was suppose to, so decided it best to call it a night and headed for home. Below is a picture of Zeus treed with the coon seen on the above described night. Zeus is out of Harpeth River Blue Jack x Blue Midnight Star.

ZEUS, TREED WITH THE COON
