Tramp

Took Tramp out tonight for a run. 1st drop he went in a little over 500 yrds struck a bad track. He worked it in ther for a little bit and started warming the track up and was getting deeper fast. I went around on another road to get closer. When I stopped the 4-wheeler I could hear him treed. I checked the Garmin and it wasn't picking him up. There was a locked gate there and he had gotten on land that I did not have permission to hunt on. I could have went around the gate with my 4-wheeler, but not having permisson to hunt there I figured it would be better if I walked in. He had those piney wood flats ringing. I walked in over 600 yrds before my Garmin finally picked up and when it did it said Tramp was still 725 yrds. I sure didnt think he was that far when I started. I needed some exercise, but not that much. Tramp 11's sire, the ole Tramp dog use to do me the same way. I had walked a lot of miles to get to that ole hound thinking he was closer. I walked down a woods road until I got to within about 200 yrds of him and had ti hit the piney woods. The planted pines were probably around 25 yrs old and the under growth and briars were not too bad. I walked in to him. He was treed up a pine. I shined for a while mostly looking toward the top of the tree for that is usually where you find him in a pine tree, but when I did finally find him he was just a little over half way up. I knocked him out and after Tramp finished him we headed to the 4-wheeler. We loaded up and moved on down the swamp. We got down next to the river and I turned tramp loose on the opposite side of the road from the river. He went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a fair track, moved it in another 150 yrds and treed. I went around on another road and got towithin about 50 yrds of him and walked on in. He was treed up a huge cypress. I shined for a while, but I never could get him to look so we went back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night

So happy you are enjoying your hounds. Tramp sure sounds a lot like his pa!!! When I owned ole Tramp, and a stranger hunted with me, when Tramp treed they would say, "He doesn't sound that far away!" I would just laugh and say, "He's a lot farther than you think." I sure hope the best is yet to come for you and your hounds.

Tramp

Hunted Tramp alone again last night for the last time until we get to the Winter Classic. 1st drop, He went in about 150 yrds and fell treed. walked in to him and he was treed on a medium size Water Oak. I walked out to where I could get a good look at the tree and when I shined he was looking at me from about half way up. I walked back in and petted ole Tramp and we left this one to run again. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and went to the River. I turned him down the branch that I usually turn loose on and he went in about 300 yrds and struck a working track. He moved it on in a couple hundred more yrds and treed. He had bumped up one time before at about 450 yrds and had moved on and treed right. I started walking in to him and came to a slough. The slough is about 200 yrds wide with an island out in the middle. Now I have treed out on this island many times through the years and I have tried to figure out how to sink this island so these dogs will quit treeing out on it and I wont have to cross this slough again, but I aint figured it out yet, so I crossed the slough and walk on in to Tramp. He was treed up a huge oak with vines running through it. I have treed up this tree several times before through the years, sometimes I find the coon and sometimes I dont. This time I didnt, but I figured he was there some where. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

Gin

Took Gin out for a short run tonight. I let Tramp have the night off to rest up for the weekend. Gin went in about 150 yrds and struck a fair track and moved it in another 150 yrds and treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a large water oak. I shined for a few minutes and found the coon sitting right in the top. I petted her up a little and we left this one to run again. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and moved on down the swamp. I turned her loose again and she went hunting, but never got a bark. She came back by in about 30 min. and I caught her. We went to the river and I turned her down the swamp. She went in about 400 yrds and struck a real cold track and started working it. She worked it up an old slough about 450 yrds. She had bumped a couple of trees and moved on. I didnt want to stay out too late tonight so when I got a chance I cut her off and called her out,for it was bad country where she was headed. She came on in and we called it a night

Doll V, Doll IV, and Smoke

Smoke is a pup that I wanted to try because I've heard good things about Cory's dogs.
GRNITECH CH PR MAILES BLUE SUE'S RATTLER
MISTY RIVER MAXIMUM BLUE SMOKE
GRNITECH PR RACKET RIDGE WEEZIE
Smoke is a pup that me and Mr Jack own but not sure if he knows that and I'm sure everyone knows the others.

Chris, myself and 3 of the boys cut the dogs up a branch leading toward the upper end of the dummy line. The older dogs got in deep and Smoke came back with this being his 3rd time out. They got in over 800 yrds and Doll4 struck a fair track with Doll 5 soon after. They worked the track about 175 yrds and treed on a big hollow den. I still cant walk for a while so Chris and the boys walked in and shined for a min but was confident that he was on the inside.
2nd drop
We cut the dogs south toward Greens Creek and they walked a little ways with the dogs to help the pup stay closer to any action. It was only about 175 yrds when Doll4 struck a cold feeding track. After a min Doll5 opened and started helping with the track. After working the track about 50 yrds Smoke decided he could help and started opening fairly often. All 3 continued with this track for a few hundred yrds when Doll 5 located the tree with Doll4 close behind. After a few seconds Smoke decided he agreed and started treeing with the older dogs. At this point I'm getting fairly proud of this pup and this was Doll4 first time out in several months. It didn't take Chris long to spot the coon and he showed the boys, after petting the dogs real good they came out. They didn't have a gun to knock the coon out with so we'll run him again.
3rd drop
We cut the dogs off a powerline that the hunters had out a little corn. This coon didn't have much chance and turned out to be great for the pup. The older dogs went left toward the corn and Smoke went right. The older dogs went about 60 yrds and just started blowing the woods up. Smoke quickly went to them and all 3 were opening every breath and I knew this coon didn't have a chance. We all sat listening to a very good race and these dogs were ringing in those swamps. They all 3 come treed about 225 yrds in the swamp and after staying put about 5 min listening to these hounds Chris started in with his crew. The coon wasn't looking but after some squalling by these boys he looked straight at them. With everything going so good, the pup treeing good and no coon shot out in a while Chris knocked her out and let this pup do some chewing. They sit around petting up the dogs and made the walk out to the buggy. We decided to put them up on good terms and not push them to far. We got a couple pics and called it a night. I'm very proud of these boys and I must admit I was proud of this young dogs.

Winter Classic

Just got back from the Winter Classic, had a great time. We had the best weather this year than any classic that I have ever been to, wheather in Albany, Ga. or Batesville, Ms.. I was unlucky in the draw as far as mileage both Friday and Saturday night. I drew Marianna, Ark. Both nights, which was 90 miles away and on Sat. night I traveled another 50 miles to hunt, but we hunted in good places with good people. It just makes a rough weekend with all the traveling, for the two nights we drove well over 500 miles. Tramp didnt win anything. He did win his cast Friday night, but didnt get into the top 10. Sat. night we had a problem and I withdrew him about 20 min. into the hunt. Tramp did a good job up there and I was real proud of him the way he worked up there. It sure was good to meet a lot of ole friends there and to meet some new ones. Tramp and I both look forward to getting back there next year.

WINTER CLASSIC

Glad you had a good, safe trip Mr. Jack. I saw you on Friday but you were visiting with someone and I didn't want to interrupt so I walked on thinking I would catch up with you later. Never saw you again. We will get together soon and make a few rounds. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Doll IV and DollV

Chris, myself, and 3 of the boys hunted last night. We hunted on the Pearl River around Columbia. He cut the dogs behind an old lake and they went in about 175 yards with Doll V opening 1st and Doll IV a few seconds later. They pushed him pretty good for a while with this coon doing everything possible to get away. He got in an old cutover that's full of water and crossed that branch many times. Swam through a big culvert and finally climbed after about 650 yards. Doll V barked treed about 3 barks ahead of Doll IV that greatly surprised me but also made me very proud of her. Chris and his crew walked into this cutover about 200 yards and tried to get a light into this tree but it was impossible do to the under growth. He allowed the dogs some tree time and gave the kids a chance to squall and brought the dogs out. He said he felt confident they had him but can't be sure. We'll get him later.
2nd drop
He cut the dogs right on the banks of the river headed north and in a short amount of time these dogs were over 800 yards. We moved as close as possible and when we parked they were 380 yards working a track and sounded like a good one. We couldn't get any closer so Chris and Cole started walking with me and the 2 lazy kids listening from the truck. They pushed this coon another 800 yards and treed him up a large tree almost in the Little League Ball Park. Doll V treeing 1st again but ol moma was right behind her. They found the coon pretty fast and he looked like a little bear. One of the biggest ever for us. Chris felt sure it was an old boar so after Cole squalled him down the tree a ways. Chris shot him out to the dogs before he jumped out. Against my better judgement I allowed the oldest kid to drive my truck around as close to his dad as possible but he done a great job. The dogs had done good on 2 fairly rough coons and the kids had school so we called it a night.

Doll IV, Doll V, and Smoke

Chris, myself and 3 boys made another hunt last night. I called and asked Mr Jack if he wanted to go but he's been a little under the weather. We cut loose in a place we've never hunted 1st drop by an old pond that has a branch feeding it. It didn't take all 3 dogs long to start working a track and it seemed to be a fair track. Smoke went with the older dogs for about 350 yards and the track got slow for a while and he came back. The older dogs got the track moving again and were getting pretty deep. We made a move to get closer stopping to listen some and they were still working this track. The coon crossed a gravel road and got into an old dry cutover and at this point they had worked him about 1100 yards but they were having a lot of trouble. We gave them some time but they just couldn't finish this track so we caught the dogs and moved.
2nd drop
We cut the dogs in the swamp behind my house and they were about 200 yards when Smoke started opening and working a track. I knew it wasn't a coon when the other dogs wouldn't help with the track. He worked it about 75 yards and was barking treed every breath. Chris walked in and this possum wasn't very high in a big hole that Smoke could stretch out and stick his head into. The other dogs came in to see what he had but not being very interested Chris caught the pup and sent all the dogs on down the swamp. They all went hunting with Doll IV striking a track Doll V soon behind her. The pup got with them and they worked this track only about 150 yards when Doll v located and started treeing. The other 2 agreed and the were sounding pretty good. This was the best Smoke has treed thus far barking every breath and has a big loud mouth. Chris and boys walked in and they spotted the coon in the top of a water oak in the middle of a slough about knee deep. He shot the coon out just for the pup and petted all 3 up good.
3rd drop
We cut the dogs along Greens Creek with Doll V going south, Doll IV and Smoke went north. Doll V was 450 yards south and started working a rough track. The pup went 800 yards north with Doll IV and started back to us. About the time he found us Doll IV was 950 yards and struck a track headed back toward us. It was a much better track and she was pushing it good. We caught the pup and started to Doll IV and she treed after working this track about 250 yards. Chris and the boys walked in and found the coon in the top of a medium size oak with no leaves. They left the coon for another night and walked back out to the buggy. We rode back a close to Doll V as possible. She had the track going a little better and was 350 yards out. Smoke was wanting to get to her so he sent him her way. To my surprise he went to her and they both worked this track another 200 yards with Doll V falling treed. Smoke started treeing shortly after and they really sounded good. We moved around and got within 200 yards. Chris asked me how bad the woods were and I told him it was easy walking. This is a rough place and I knew it. He didn't go 40 yards and I could him cursing me bad. I sit on the buggy and got me a good laugh. They finally got to the dogs and they were treed on a big old bay that was fully leaved. He made an attempt but didn't see the coon and we called it a night. It was 11:30 by this time, the kids had school and my feet were killing me. I thought the dogs done a fair job and I see improvement with Smoke each time out.

Late update but Thursday night Chris, Justin, and myself went to the river swamps. They cut the dogs in a narrow block of woods with a slough running south. The dogs went in about 75 yards and all 3 struck together on a hot track. They pushed him to the end of the slough and he crossed about 90 yards of field climbing just a few yards into the woods. They ran him a total of 225 yards. They all hit a huge water oak about the same time. They searched a few min but couldn't get him to look but the tree had a few holes in it.
2nd drop
They walked about 50 yards and cut the dogs down the slough we were on at this time headed east. The dogs hunted out to 750 yards when Tramp opened and Ruby shortly after. We loaded up and drove around to get closer. We got about 350 yards and they were still working this track. Ruby treed with Doll V close behind her and Tramp barked up about twice. This is where Mr. Jack starts grinning and I got VERY aggravated. The females continue blowing the top out but Tramp started pushing the track farther into the swamp. They shined their tree while Tramp finished the track but it was slick. At this time Tramp was treed 400 yards down the slough. They went and found the coon right quick.
3rd drop
We changed spots and they cut down a creek headed south. The dogs all split in different directions. Ruby opened 1st 320 yards east. The others dogs weren't on anything and made their way to Ruby. They were heating the track up good and had pushed it 300 yards when Ruby came treed with Doll behind her but Tramp kept working the track. When I heard this I wont write the words I was saying to myself. They shined their tree but no coon and by this time Tramp was treed 140 yards deeper. Chris gave Doll a little much needed encouragement to finish these tracks and showed her we WON'T make a habit of walking to empty trees. Tramps tree was hollow and broke off about 30' up. They couldn't see the coon but could have been there.
4th drop
We moved and they cut the dogs south down the river bank. The dogs hunted hard covering about a mile of river bank but never opened so we caught the dogs on the sand bar and called it a night.
