Looks like the weather won't be do bad. Nice moonlite night. Good time to test the hounds coon finding ability. If nothing is moving Sounder is going to walk me to death unless I can drive around. That will be one way to keep warm. One thing for sure he will be under a coon somewhere and I hope not a den.

6 mile round trip with Sounder and Maggie we treed 5
3 singles and a double.

Maggie got the first tree but Sounder got all first strikes.
Second tree Sounder was first and first

3rd tree both dogs just fell treed no track I think I'd give that one to Sounder as well.

4th tree Sounder just treed no track Maggie backed him but didn't like it much he had a double up there sleep.

Dogs hunted hard but worked the areas has they went down the river.
I'd say by score card Sounder won.
I'm sure glad my dogs are easy to lead out of the woods.
I let them both ride up front with me.
I didn't need a light all night except to shine the trees. The ole Shotgun brought those coons out but it took a few shots for sure.

Hi Elmo, my cousin has a NCH female that is out of my old Duke dog she is 8 years old and still the best coon dog around here. He is wanting to breed her one more time and he has been asking me about a good dog to breed to with a good nose and I think old Sounder would fit the bill and he is only 4 hours from us, I would have to try one for myself.

Hunted with Terry Estill with Spud and Earl with Boomer I had Maggie.
First drop Spud and Boomer struck and Spud went out of the country. Maggie came in and Boomer came in.
We got Spud rounded up and next drop Boomer and Maggie treed a coon.
Next drop Boomer treed but left he later came back to the tree where he showed us a possum which he got in trouble for.
We called it a night.

1.3 miles later Maggie got one treed in a huge cottonwood with plenty vines. I shot at the coon twice and couldn't find him anymore. I bet I looked for 30 minutes and have no idea where he was hiding so I gave up and came home.

Elmo I think coon are laying up not sturing much. Plenty of coon where you were hunting. If they were moveing Maggie would not have to go so far to find a coon. There will be better nights. Maggie is doing a good job and I can see she is a keeper.

Maggie is a keeper you are right about that. I don't like females but I like this one for some reason.
She has to prove to me just like the rest that she can do it on these bad nights and without slick treeing or running junk.
She has proven herself to me now and that is all that matters.
That was the first coon I ever left like that. Man that tree was huge. I will get him again soon.

I got out at 7pm it was cold and the snow very crusty. I hunte Maggie she made a 1000 yard circle and came in no bark. I went home. I didn't want to hurt her feet with the crusted snow and I got cold fast for some reason.
I will give it a whirl tonight.
I hunted Midway farms and someone had trapped about 35 coon off it so it may be a wash there. Of course you can never get them all but that will make a big dent in the population for sure.
Weather is suppose to be warm all week so maybe it will get this snow and ice off the roads and out of the woods.

I hunted with Terry Estill with Spud and Earl Howell with a Cur dog We did well two tracks two trees two coons. First tree Magic got. Second tree not sure dogs where deep when they treed.
Came home and the weather is great outside.

First track 500 yards hot den tree. I hunted Sounder and Maggie

Next turn out 900 yards slick tree. I was not happy about it but it happens. I sent them on and .83 miles later treed on a den. I had enough walking for the night. Muddy cornfields and beans was enough for me.
So far to the best of my knowledge I've treed 5 true slick trees a few dens the rest coons. I think around 70 so far. 1 armadillo, no deer races, no coyote races, Maggie in on 1 skunk but was late getting in on it so hardly nothing on her but in a hunt she would have been scratched. No possums, Sounder and Magic have only been out a hand full of times this season but have shown coon in every tree but 1 slick Oh Sounder treed two dens. No other off game or races yet. I say that because they are dogs and as soon as you say it they will do it.
So far season is going as expected. We have about 3 weeks of season left so time will tell.
Now what I need Maggie to split more. She likes to run with the pack if all possible. She seems to be a coon treeing machine alone so I hope she get the confidence to split and hold pressure. So I will be working on that.

Sorry about canceling last night Elmo. It flat got real froggy last night. I believe we would have had issues trying to turn hounds loose. I have no doubt the coons were moring on such a damp wamr evening. It hurt to stay home, I went out on the deck two or three times just to check it out tomake sure I could nt slip a hunt in. Let's reschedule for next week if all possible. Going to hunt the hounds hard this weekend.
