you men seen this one....................Illinois problems deeper than governor
Wed, July 06, 2011
It’s easy to point to all our crooked governors as proof of the problems facing Illinois politics.
And no doubt, we have been cursed with a unique run of governors.
But they aren’t the only folks walking around with their hands out. Nope. We have a culture of crooked folks in Illinois politics. And they aren’t all from Chicago.
Consider the case of Scott Flood, son of former Department of Natural Resources director Sam Flood. The Belleville News-Democrat reported today that Flood will resign as of July 15 from his $70,000 per year DNR job as a regional land manager. He does so just in time to qualify for a state pension.
That is despite the recommendation of an ethics committee that Flood should have been fired for ...
* Sleeping during the work day.
* Using his state cellular phone, vehicle and electronic equipment for personal purposes.
* Conducting personal business at work.
* Arriving late and leaving early for work.
* Failing to inform the agency of outside business interests or employment.
This is no shock, of course. Scott Flood’s father Sam is the former county clerk of St. Clair County and helped Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s campaign. He got paid off by being named DNR’s acting director in 2005. Then he became an assistant director. In what should come as no shock, Sam Flood’s son has had a nice job for the past eight years.
So it goes in Springfield and across Illinois. And I’ve talked to several guys who said Sam Flood was, “A great guy.” Maybe his son is, too.
That’s not the point.
The point is that so long as Springfield is filled with jobs for folks who don’t actually work, the state will remain in a world of hurt. And we will wind up with governors in jail.
